  • ASUS DRW-1814BLT crashes explorer.exe
  • Question by Techjunkie, Monday 7th of July 2008 12:17
    Hi there,

I put together a pc last year for a friend of mine, he came by last week, his pc crashes when trying to burn an audio-cd. On my question if it just happened or if it always been, he answered: Dunno, never tried before :O Also, dvd-burning is no problem, works perfectly.

    Specs:
    Asus M2A-VM HDMI mobo
    AMD Athlon64/3200+ CPU
    1Gb of mem
    onboard video
    250Gb Sata HD (seagate 7200.11)
    Asus DRW-1814BLT
    Win XP/SP2

    What happens exactly:
When trying to burn an audio-cd, he starts Nero 8, starts burning, 3 or 4 songs are burned, Nero stalls, timer counts on, explorer crashes, reset is the only solution.

    Things I tried:
I tried different media, Traxdata, Nashua and Verbatim, same problem. I tried astroburn, same, tried WMP, same. Right now I have mailed him the forceaspi-zip I found here through the forum, don't know yet about results. I also tried switching SATA-ports, no results.

    Questions:
Any idea what is going wrong and how to solve it? I hope ASPI might change something. Will it have any effect to play around with AHCI, since dvds are burned perfectly?

I suggest using the free BURRRN for CDDA/AudioCd.

Alright another burning-program, but even if that DOES work, why won't it burn right on other programs? Applying a patch is only acceptable to me if I know what it fixes. Kinda buying a new car when your old one doesn't go anymore without checking if your tire is leak, your engine is broken, or your battery is dead.

    @ Techjunkie,

Exactly what particular “Patch” are you referring to?

Have you attempted to boot in the “Safe Mode” and then attempted to Burn an Audio CD?

It would be helpful to provide an N e r o Log of a failed burning attempt for analysts. Quite possible an N e r o Log will provide information on exactly what is causing the problem.

Many knowledgeable experienced informed users considerer N e r o 8 a “Buggy” software program. As suggested by Forum Member _chef_ over a week ago use a known proven stable error free Burning program such as BURRRN for CDDA/AudioCd (http://www.burrrn.net/download/burrrn_package.exe).

I was referring to the patch take another burning program and use that. I will try to get a nero-log, I am not sure if I can get that, since the whole pc freezes. I will try the Burrrn-program, although where I thought I had much experience on burning cd's and dvd's (bought my first HP cd-burner for about 600euro's), I have never heard of this program. I know Alcohol 120%, Clonecd, Nero and even Astroburn as general burning programs, of which I have tried Nero and Astroburn. For imageburning, I used DVDDecrypter and Imageburn.

Anyway, to get back ontopic, what does burning in safe-mode tell me about the freezing-problem? Does Burrrn use it's own engine, or does it use Nero's engine the right way?

    @ Techjunkie,

Suggest leaning to use using Google Search (http://www.google.com) and/or WikiPedia (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Main_Page) when researching your ‘Questions’.

In this particular instance concerning the topic “Safe Mode” ->

Concerning the Burrrn software program. Burrrn is a very stable error free complete stand-alone Burning software program. To acquire detailed information on the Burrrn software program visit the Burrn Homepage ->

Actually, I use Google less to answer questions like these, since it seems to be flooded and corrupted by searchportals and you can hardly find what you are looking for anymore. I DO know safe mode (mainly as horribly slow operating mode in which a lot of stuff don't work anymore)

What I meant is (let's put this in noob-level language) how can I know which program or hardware is bugging the burning-capabilities, since dvd-burning works out fine? Of course, if it works in safe-mode, it could be that a buggy driver is disabled, but in the same safe-mode, ALL drivers are disabled. So: if I disable everything, it could be that NOT loading a driver causes another problem, in which case the problem seems to still be there, when in fact it is another problem with the same effect.

By the way: Great program, this Burrrn: I get a 509-error when visiting the suggested page (bandwith exceeded)

    @ Techjunkie,

You use the “Safe Mode” as a troubleshooting “Tool”. As an example suggest reviewing the below Web Link ->

    http://www.youthtech.com/techstuff/explore_windowsxp/xptroubleshoot.htm

As the above Web Link details you systematically isolate items one by one until you discover what particular offending driver, device, service, or program is causing the problem.

The Web Links I have provided in my previous Forum postings are not the only means to obtain a copy of the Burrrn Software program. Since you are aware of Google Search (http://www.google.com) if you Search for the topic ‘Burrrn’ reveals download links to the Burrrn software program. An Example ->

    http://download1us.softpedia.com/dl/f3c3a2f7d2f8b287c08dab7ecd65b76c/48888a91/100019908/software/cd_dvd_tools/burrrn_package.exe
