Problems & Support for this product

You can find all the questions that have been asked about the Samsung SH-S203N / TS-H653N below.
  • New!Drive too large or chassis too small?
  • Question by drhmai, Friday 7th of November 2008 02:46
New Samsung TS-H653N will not fit into drive bay of HP xw4600 Workstation. Apparently it is catching on the sides of the plastic casing at the front, which feature a slight bevel.
Any reason not to take a Dremel and slim the plastic bezel on the samsung unit a bit?

    Hi and Welcome!

either make the frontplate of your drive (it is removeable, so remove it for modification) or your case fit. Use any tool you like, I'd prefer a file over a Dremel.

  • Possible H653N -> S203N Crossflashing Issue?
  • Question by plutonikpenguin, Wednesday 29th of October 2008 06:54
I recently purchased a cheap HP machine that had decent specs for what I wanted to do with it, and to my great happiness, the DVD burner that it came with was an OEM TS-H653N (although, and I could be wrong, but I thought the drive was reporting itself as a 16x before the flash - perhaps a modified version of the HP firmware?) After reading success stories online, and finding a copy of an HP firmware for the drive, I crossflashed it, and things have been great until just recently.

I purchased a spindle of TDK 8x DVD+R DL media, which were of course unfortunately RITEK-S04-66 discs, which I am aware often give terrible results in a lot of drives. However, rather than sporadic issues with speed fluctuations, power calibration errors, and other random things, I have had several bizarre things happen when trying to burn the discs at 8x (at 4x they burn flawlessly, although it's obvious from the 'tree-ring' pattern that the drive was having a hard time doing it.)

Either a) the burn suddenly fails and the drive speed hits zero at 7% exactly (I haven't been able to replicate this one recently, and it's pretty damn expensive to do so, so I haven't tried, and so I don't know what speed the drive got up to when it failed), or b) the burn will go smoothly until the drive hits 6.0x, at which point an obscene scraping noise is made, and the burn speed rapidly plummets, followed by an extended period of attempted retries and an eventual failure. Also, often following a bad burn of this media, the characters of my drive's reported name and the reported media code of the discs turns to 'y's with umlauts (those two small dots above a letter in German words, etc.)

Now, I say again, I do know that these are crap discs, but I can't help but feel somewhat leery that perhaps the hardware in my drive was crippled to not allow it to go above what may have been its original rated speed.

Any ideas? If anyone else has had this problem, please let me know.
Answer by mciahel, Wednesday 29th of October 2008 22:25
    Hi and Welcome!

why do you expect your drive can handle poor media at the speed the vendor printed on the box?
According to your report, it even has difficulties @4x, so it will fail at higher speeds, of course. No crippling of the hardware, IMO.

If you like, and if you don't mind about warranty, you can try SH-S203N firmware and see if there are better results.
Any information required can be found in the FAQ (see my signature). There are also some threads about crossflashing TS-H653x to SH-S203x in this forum.

Answer by plutonikpenguin, Wednesday 12th of November 2008 05:40
It was actually the SH-S203N firmware that I was having problems with. I understand the media is junk, but I still can't get over the fact that the drive will still from time to time start spitting out random characters instead of drive info and media codes. I might just bite the bullet pretty soon and spend 30 bucks to buy a different drive.
Answer by mciahel, Wednesday 12th of November 2008 09:32
Maybe a new Sata cable helps. Not sure, but worth trying. Smilie

  • Manually control ripping speeds of audio cds
  • Question by Lord Kreachyr, Monday 20th of October 2008 03:26
Hello. I was wondering if there is any way for me to control the ripping speed of my dvd-drive. My specific scenario is this: I am importing my audio cds to my computer, and I want to specify the speed for the cd's to be ripped at (such as 2x, 4x, 8x). I don't know if I can make a global setting for my drive, or if I have to have programs that allow rip speed change. I don't really care what program to use to import my cds, but prefer iTunes or WMP11. Any help on this would be great.
    Thanks.

    Relevant PC specs:
OS: Windows Vista Business SP1 (32bit)
    DVD Drive: Samsung SH-S203N
Sound Card: Creative X-Fi Xtreme Music
    Mobo: MSI-K9N-SLIPlatinum

exact audio copy, EAC is highly recommended for audio cd ripping
    http://www.exactaudiocopy.de/en/
Answer by Lord Kreachyr, Tuesday 21st of October 2008 03:25
Thanks for the post. I do have EAC, but under 'drive settings' the only speed options I am given to rip at are 8x, 16x, and actual(which results in approx 8-10x). Is there a way to configure more rip speed options in EAC? Also, is there a way to configure rip speeds in iTunes8 or WMP11?

I also googled around, and tried Nero Drive Speed, but either it doesn't work, or I have no idea how to apply it's settings globally as I ripped a CD in iTunes and it ripped at 10x.
    Answer by troy512, Tuesday 21st of October 2008 07:23
i was just about to recommend nero drive speed. never mind.

i know ImgBurn will allow you to set ripping speed. just select read mode and read speed.

if the discs you are trying to copy are copy protected you might need a program such as AnyDVD.
Answer by packetloss, Tuesday 21st of October 2008 13:41
The question is: Why do you want to reduce the speed lower than 8x? EAC secure mode, if set up properly, will make sure that your extracted audio files are exact copies of the CDDA tracks stored on the CD. Besides, modern drives, including your Samsung 203, are tuned for high speed reading (and burning), so slower does not necessarily mean better, on the contrary often, an urban myth that simply doesn't seem to die .
Answer by Lord Kreachyr, Sunday 26th of October 2008 23:01
I tried ImgBurn, but for some reason or another, setting the rip speeds did nothing.

Thanks for the info on EAC's secure mode.

The reason's behind my thinking is this: I want to archive my cd collection in wav format, and want to get the most perfect rip of the cd's without having to rip them again. I started looking for a 'perfect' ripper, and became a little paranoid after seeing many forums and sites that said one could never get a perfect rip, and that speeds above 2x or 4x could bring on more errors than those speeds.

If I seem a bit new to ripping cd's with perfect quality, it's because I am. Overall, I want to rip my cd's perfectly, but also want to know if there is a way to control the global speeds of my drive, perhaps one program that will set the speeds, and all other programs will acknowledge those speeds, just because I want to Smilie

Unless you only have few CD's that's gonna take a whole lot of hard drive space.

    MysticEyes said:

Yes indeed - 50+ GBs so far - but hdd space is not an issue for me.
Answer by packetloss, Monday 27th of October 2008 01:35
Like I said, "slower is always better" is nothing but a myth. More important factors in achieving a 'perfect' rip is the tool used (e.g. EAC), the right configuration of that tool (secure mode, right parameters), and the digital audio extraction quality / features of the optical drive.

Btw., you could use some lossless compression like FLAC or APE to save a lot of space (up to ~50%) on those rips without losing any quality. EAC supports FLAC, and most modern media player software like Winamp does also, without the need of plugins even.
Answer by Lord Kreachyr, Monday 27th of October 2008 02:12
Can WMP11 and iTunes play FLAC?

Also, probably the main question I have to ask: is there some easy way to tell my dvd drive to rip or burn at specific speeds? I'll still rip at 8x with secure mode in EAC (what parameters are you talking about? the offset number?), but I just want to know for the sake of knowing.
Answer by packetloss, Monday 27th of October 2008 03:26
Offset, C2 error detection, accurate stream support, audio caching (yes or no), overread into lead-in and lead-out etc. Ideally, the drive supports accurate stream and C2 error info, while it does not cache audio data. This results in very fast and accurate ripping.

If you have already tried tools like Nero Drive Speed and CD Bremse, there is not much you can do.

Windows Media Player 11 can play FLAC files after some tweaking according to this tutorial. iTunes is a more complicated case. If you want to stick to iTunes, you could use Apple's lossless audio codec which is integrated in iTunes instead, at the expense of compatibility (only iTunes and iPods usually support Apple lossess).

Proper media players like Winamp or foobar2000 support FLAC out of the box.
Answer by Lord Kreachyr, Sunday 9th of November 2008 20:15
I might try CD Bremse if I learn German, but that's what I had feared.

Thanks for all you help. I now feel more comfortable ripping with EAC with those features selected.

The samsung website only has the following two hits:

    1) firmare for SH-S203N OEM SB:

thanks Michael, I guess I hadn't seen that 'cause I had been looking for H653N and didn't think to look for similar versions like H653B.

anyway, I just checked on the HP site and they actually do have a firmware update (my mistake for missing this earlier). I will give this a shot first as I'm really only interested in doing a regionfree patch for now:
    ftp://ftp.hp.com/pub/softlib/software10/COL25284/pv-65057-1/sp37498.exe

    thanks again, you guys rock!

    duh, I'm such a hopeless n00b Frown
unpacking the firmware from HP's site, yelds a 0609.bin which is scrambled so I can't patch it.

It seems there are no tools available for un-scrambling, so any idea where I can find an un-scrambled version of this? It's been around for under a month so I don't have much hope...

I doubt, it is scrambled Wink

In short: this firmware is not supported by the patch utility (yet), but the RPC1 patch can be applied with MCSE Smilie

    No, it is not scrambled.
Answer by wriadrea, Friday 3rd of October 2008 06:26
thanks for correcting me and providing additional guidance.

based on the guidance I've tried two things:
    1) the TS-H653N OEM HP (0609.bin), patched with MCES (only checked the RPC1 checkbox)
    2) the SH-S203N OEM SB02, patched with Patch_Utility_Samsung-3.4.1 (only checked the region free checkbox)

Tried "Monster Inc." and "Cars" (originals bought in Italy) and in both cases Media Player complained about error C00D1163.

I then tried both those same firmwares but this time the original unpatched versions and in both cases Media Player complained about the region mismatch and gave the option of changing it.

Is this still me doing something wrong?
Or is there something more i need to do to get around the C00D1163 on patched firmares?
Or is this just Disney being evil?

Sorry to waste your time, appreciate any help.
    Answer by ala42, Friday 3rd of October 2008 17:20
RPC1 does not mean no region check. Have a look here.
Answer by wriadrea, Saturday 4th of October 2008 18:11
indeed. just to close on this, applied the HP firmare RPC1 patched with MCES and I can play the DVDs with the VLC Media Player.

thanks for walking me through this

  • Samsung DVD burners (sata)
  • Question by MC99, Saturday 20th of September 2008 19:27
Because of all the good reviews, I bought a new Samsung burner last month (S203N) to try try out on one of my autoloaders, and was disappointed to learn that trays only eject 95% of the way on these models. Not good in an autoloader setup, where an arm on the unit lowers the disc in a tray, so the tray has to be 100% open when ejecting. Never seen this with other brands. I can't think of anyway to change that. Is Samsung just not compatible with autoloaders?

This might be 100% according to Samsung specs Wink

Nexperia Benq and Philips drives have the same "tray travel".

I can't think of anyway to change that. Is Samsung just not compatible with autoloaders?

Support of special, not widespread applications like autoloaders is not something you can expect. I am sure, the manufacturer of your autoloader has some recommendations for (replacement) drives. Maybe a Pioneer (or a LG) is the better option for you, since their trays have some more travel.

    Answer by MC99, Monday 22nd of September 2008 19:11
Thanks. I have some Pioneer 212D as well. Although I've never had problems with Pionner IDE burners, these sata have all kinds of trouble reading the discs after they burn - and that slows the whole system down. So I'm am going to try another sata brand to compare. You wouldn't happen to know if Lite On have adequate tray travel? Or are LG just as good as Lite On?

My own Liteon drive is too old to compare it to the newest generation drives.

The GH-20NS10 is a very good burner, but it lacks some features Liteon is famous forWink But the LG is the better CD writer.

  • DVDFab can not aquire source DVD
  • Question by HellsBells, Friday 5th of September 2008 18:08
I am running DVDFab Platinum (v. 5.0.8.5) with a Samsung SH-S203N. The box is running Vista Premium.

The problem that I am running into is when I fire up DVDFab and pop in one of my DVD's to copy I can not aquire the source DVD. When I navigate to it it pops up a screen asking me to shoot the DVDFab a list of the IFO files. It has been a while since I have used the software. Last time I used it was version 3..? and I did not have any problems back then. Any guidence would be greatly appreciated.

    HellsBells
Answer by signals, Friday 5th of September 2008 18:24
Check the DEP list, DVDFab and DVDFab Console should be on it as exceptions. You may have a conflict with other software that is blocking DVDFab from the low-level drive access that it uses. You should never have to navigate to a disc in an optical drive.
Answer by HellsBells, Friday 5th of September 2008 22:22
I checked the DEP list and the application is allowed. I guess the only thing I can do is reload the OS and start from scratch. I have a laptop that I can try it on but this really does not make sense on why it would not work.

Preview each one and then choose the best one. If one has a very dark scene or fading in from black, I would go with that one.
Answer by LIGHTNING UK!, Thursday 28th of August 2008 11:03
I would guess that the authoring program intended for the gold star one to be used as the LB position, hence why the SPLIP (seamless playback) flag has been cleared.

So just select it (as you appear to have already done) and then click OK.

Yes and no, some players will probably just hang if you do that but it's better than just splitting the data exactly in half.

I've guess I've never really seen the big deal in picking one from the selection and clicking ok.... it's not like it's asking you to perform brain surgery or anything!

  • Copied DVDs do not play in standalone Player
  • Question by rascallyrabbit, Tuesday 26th of August 2008 05:19
Embarrassment I'm using 123CopyDVD 2008 software to copy DVD. The DVD plays in my HP Pc (same burner/reader) but will not play in standalone player. (new Sony DVD Recoder player).
I have tried both -R, +R DVD's (Memorex) and when I put in satndalone it either freezes or starts skipping through the DVD.

I contacted 123Copy DVD but they indicated my writer might not be able to write these formats. The specs say it can..
What am I doing wrong... Is there an upgrade for this driver?
    Any ideas?
Answer by GJ, Tuesday 26th of August 2008 05:25

    rascallyrabbit said:
[qanda](Memorex) and when I put in satndalone it either freezes or starts skipping through the DVD.

The freezing and skipping is due to a too fast burn speed. Lower your burn speed! Memorex is not good media and you should burn at half the rated speed for them. If rated 16x burn at 8x, if rated 8x burn at 4x.
    Answer by Kerry56, Tuesday 26th of August 2008 05:34
This is probably a problem with the media you are using. Slowing down the burn speed might help, but I think you would be better off using Verbatim 16x media. And I'd try burning it at 12x or 8x.

My Samsung 203B burns Verbatim +R 16x very well at 8x.

Memorex varies greatly in quality, ranging from mediocre to poor. They use different suppliers, so it is hard to know exactly what disks you will get....and they seem to get less than the best disks available from those suppliers anyway.

Your copy program is one that I am not familiar with. Does this rip and compress the movie to fit onto a single layer dvd? It might be part of the problem. If you continue to have freezes and skipping, even after changing the media to Verbatim and slowing down the burning speed, this program is next on the list of suspects.

There are free tools that are highly recommended around here if you care to look at them, including the regularly updated free decryption program DVDFab HD Decrypter, the compression program DVDShrink, and the free burning program called ImgBurn.
Answer by rascallyrabbit, Tuesday 26th of August 2008 05:44
    The DVD +R's were Verbatim.
Is that the bit rate they talk about -- which is set to auto?

They give you 3 options copy DVD to DVD, copies the DVD exactly or Copy the Movie only or copy to Dual layer. I have tried the first two options with same results. The DVD plays in 3 different PC's (home, work and laptop) but not in standalone.

Do I need to save movie to Harddrive first (other than temp directory which they utilize when the "copy DVD" is selected) and then use the Create DVD mode?

The 123copydvd.com has a free 24 hour download to test software. I bought it after testing but didn't try my standalone.
    Answer by Kerry56, Tuesday 26th of August 2008 05:55
Since it takes the movie and places it in a temp directory, you are decrypting and ripping to the hard drive before burning. So I doubt that doing it manually will change anything.

The first question is, will the program allow you to set the burning speed? If so, slow the blasted thing down.

Bitrate in video refers to the amount of information, or detail that is included per unit of time. Higher bitrates yield better quality (up to a point), but result in larger files. If your file has to fit a certain size, say a single layer dvd, then you can only have so high a bitrate in order for it to fit. You should almost certainly leave it on auto in this program
Answer by GJ, Tuesday 26th of August 2008 05:58
123copydvd is not exactly a good dvd backup program and to me I think you wasted your money on it. I may have it but I have not used it for awhile and believe I need to pay more money for the recent update. Why don't you download dvdfab hd decryptor it is a free program and is updated all the time. Then you need dvdshrink so you can compress the dvd so it fits on a dvd+r or -r blank. dvdshrink works with the nero burning rom or you can use ImgBurn but I not know how for that but someone else does. Also anydvd along with clonedvd is good and gives a free 21 day trial. dvdfab also gives a fgree trial for their 2 pay programs. try them out and see what works for you

Part of the problem might be the software your using to copy your dvd. Might be better to use something like DVDfab Plat or AnyDVD with either CloneCD or CloneDVD to make better backup DVD. But also as Kerry56 mention burn speed makes alot of difference but also make sure you defrag your HDD for better copies. I use memorex and had good results in burning but I burned memorex DL at 2.4x speed not max or default to get better results.

  • Sammy S203n Fully Patched Vs. Mad Dog Md-20xstfi
  • Question by SLOVEHEART, Saturday 23rd of August 2008 04:12
here is a comparision of a sammy s203n sbo2 fully patched w/codeking, and a mad dog md-20xstfi which is a ts-h653b or a s203b with mad dog firmware, both nero disc speeds were scanned with the mad dog drive and both were ripped with dvdfab5085 and a sammy s223f as the reading drive (sb00 fully patched). both discs are verbatim dl 8x. the first time I scanned the mad dog disc (first attachment) i got 237 pi failures, i had to scan it again, it must have gotten dirty because the pi failures are up to 653, but that is still well below the sammy with 1603 pi failures.Cool

Why? The second burn looks quite good (and Benq DW1655 is not the most accurate DL scanner, so the result is actually even better).
But if you really think that you have a bad batch... do not trash it, send it to me please bigsmilebigsmilebigsmile

Try the unit with another computer to rule out hardware issues.
Also, you might try dedicated CD/DVD burning software instead of Windows built-in CD burning engine. ImgBurn is free and highly recommended.

  • Samsung 203N Nero 8 how to burn @ 20X ?
  • Question by Vektor4567, Friday 25th of July 2008 19:09
Thanks for any help you might be able to offer. I notice people are able to burn 16x media @ 20x and I'm wondering how I might set that up? Nero by default shows a speed of 18x. Thanks again, Mike
Answer by molnart, Friday 25th of July 2008 19:30
What type of media do you use ? 18x and 20x burning is allowed only on some "high quality" media like MCC004 and so
    Answer by Vektor4567, Saturday 26th of July 2008 06:20
Thanks, That must be it then, I'm not using ultra premium discs, I have Verbatim DVD -R 16x currently. I'll have to check out that media you wrote about. Thanks again, Mike

P.S. could I benefit in any way by updating my firmware? I'm always itching to do stuff like that even though it's not really necessary, lol
Answer by molnart, Sunday 27th of July 2008 22:40
Generally it is always recommended to use the latest firmware (SB02 currently).
Indeed, for Verbatim DVD-R 18x is the maximum allowed speed, however with Verbatim DVD+R 20x is allowed also. However i wouldnt recommend to burn at such speeds otherwise than for testing purposes. IMHO the time gain is not significant enough to sacrifice burning quality

  • DVD Burning
  • Question by AaronLee, Friday 25th of July 2008 01:25
First post, so I hope I'm not breaking a rule by posting without an initiation of some kind.

Recent my NEC burner started to corrupt every DVD data disc I burned (one or two files rendered unreadable, the rest fine). I decided to order a new drive, going with the Samsung SH-S203N. Unfortunately, I mulled over small details and missed one large one before I ordered it, only realizing when I was holding the drive I'd ordered a SATA drive, without having a SATA port to plug it in.

Since I'm on a Mac Mini, I don't have room for expansion of any kind. I've also been using the previous drive in an IDE external bay, which I hoped to use the new drive in. Opting not to return the new drive in exchange for an IDE drive, I ordered a Rosewill SATA to IDE bridge converter. And now I've come to my primary issue, I cannot initiate a DVD burn.

I use Toast 9 for burning, and it always freezes after filling the cache and moves to "preparing", never going beyond that. To troubleshoot without ruining more DVD's, I inserted a CD-R and burnt it just fine. To further test, I went into Disk Utility, mounted an ISO, and again successfully burnt that to a CD-R. I then created a DVD size dmg, put my data files into it, and tried to burn a DVD-R through Disk Utility. It got about 5% done and again errored out.

As a last attempt to salvage this method, I pulled the drive out, set the jumper to slave (it was defaulted to master previously), and taped the bridge securely to the drive. Attempted a DVD data burn in Toast, and again froze at "preparing". I'm not sure if bridging the connections like this is impossible or if there's something I'm missing. It plays regular DVD films fine, the Mac registers all the info about the drive, and it burns CD-R's successfully. I've troubleshot many issues reading advice from these forums over the years, but this is my first formal request for advice. I hope I'm not SOL. Thanks!
Answer by mciahel, Friday 25th of July 2008 09:17
    Hi and Welcome!

those IDE/SATA converters (there also exist SATA/IDE variants) often have compatibility problems with optical drives.

Maybe a SATA/USB adapter (even better in an enclosure) would be the better solution. In that case, your Mac will be accompanied by another box of nearly the same size Wink

  • Puzzle with SH-S203N on XP and Vista
  • Question by cmorgan, Tuesday 22nd of July 2008 19:54
    OK, here's a puzzle.

TSSTcorpCDDVDW SH-203N, Version SB02, OEM SB.
    EVGA 132-CK-NF79-A1 MB, nForce 790i Ultra SLI 775 A1, C73M55XECRB

Dual boot (two separate, non-RAIDed Raptors and one joint storage drive, all set as PCI/SATA, confirmed on the nForce Serial ATA controller (second entry in Device Manager).

Latest firmware updates for everything, and I have been lurking here to try to figure this out on my own, but this makes no sense to me. I have successfully updated the firmware, but no difference...

I can listen to and import CD audio. I can run iTunes and import from CD and DVD. I can play back both commercial and self-created (other system) DVDs, and can create both data and movie DVDs.

The only thing I can't do (at all) is burn CDs.

The blank media is recognized successfully by both the Vista 64 bit and XP SP3 sides of the dual boot. Neither OS shows any problems recognizing the drive, and both sides rip successfully. Both sides burn DVDs successfully. In all cases, using everything from the OS native "burn data CD" through to iTunes, CreativeLabs, RealPlayer, RealTek, etc., the burn process fails with an "unspecified error".

I tried decreasing the writing speed, i tried multiple media manufactorers, I checked for problems in Device Manager. I am rechecking the Master/Slave option in bios, but I think that is a red herring. Basically, I'm stumped.

Before I go trying to navigate Samsung tech support, am I missing something blindingly obvious? I must have some software conflict or something I don't know about, because I cannot see how hardware could be recognized and perform well on all those other tasks and fail only on the *cd* write.

    Help? Pointers?
Answer by mciahel, Tuesday 22nd of July 2008 22:31
    Hi and Welcome!

since you don't have a Raid setup, could you please try if your Sata controller can be set to something like "IDE" (or similar) in BIOS setup?

Additional question: is this your only drive in your computer?

    Michael
Answer by cmorgan, Friday 25th of July 2008 19:23
Checking... (Thank you for the help!)

it is one of four drives, attached through the nvidia Serial ATA controller.

The first entry in the Device Manager under PI bus connections is the

    + - ST350032 OAS SCSI Device
    - TSSTcorp CDDVDW SH-S203N SCSI CdRom Device

(Region 1, and insists on using the Microsoft 6.0.6001.18000 drivers on Vista64, andthe standard drivers as well on XP).

then the two 'boot' drives show up, each Raptor seen as a different connection

    + - WDC WD15 00HFD-00RAR SCSI Disk Device

    + - WDC WD15 00HFD-00RAR SCSI Disk Device

    In the bios:

    IDE Channel 0 Master [none]
    IDE Channel 0 Slave [none]
    SATA 1 [A0] TSST
    SATA 2 [A1] ST
    SATA 3 [B0] none
    SATA 4 [B1] WDC
    SATA 5 [C0] WDC
    SATA 6 [C1] none

    IDE Auto Detection [auto]
    Extended IDE Drive [auto]
    Access Mode [auto]

    RAID [disabled]
MCP SATA -> eSATA Configuration [all disabled]
    IEEE1394 Controller [enabled]
    JMicron AHCI Controller [enabled]
    IDE HDD Block mode [enabled]

On Chip IDE Channel 0 [enabled]
    Primary Master PIO [auto]
    Primary Slave PIO [auto]
    Primary Master UDMA [auto]
    Primary Slave UDMA [auto]
    IDE DMA transfer access [enabled]
    Serial ATA Controller [all enabled]
    IDE Prefetch mode [enabled]

Does a SATA controller have the same troubles that a RAID controller have? (And I am not sure what to set in these settings to allow IDE mode, as it looks like the extended IDE mode covers this already...)
Answer by mciahel, Friday 25th of July 2008 22:41
    Hi,

    thanks for these detailled information.
Since all attached drives are shown as SCSI, the Sata controller is not running in IDE operation mode.

I would check these settings for further options:
Extended IDE Drive [auto] <--- this looks promising
    Access Mode [auto]
    Serial ATA Controller [all enabled]

JMicron AHCI Controller [enabled] <--- perhaps disabling for troubleshooting? I guess you have one of your Raptors connected there.

Depends on the mainboard. This beast has an additional Jmicron aboard, I guess, that is port 5 or 6. This should be avoided with opticals Cool

But exchanging a HDD with the drive is worth trying if nothing else works.
Answer by cmorgan, Saturday 26th of July 2008 22:32
Hmmm... the only options bios gives for any of those is Auto or Disable. It might be time for me to open up this case and see what is connected where.
