  • Problems burning Datawrite DVD+R DL with BenQ 1640 BSRB
  • Question by smartdevil, Sunday 2nd of November 2008 13:37
    Hi Everyone,
I am using BenQ DW1640 with firmware BSRS. But i am having problems burning Datawrite DVD +R DL disk with it. No matter which burners i use, it seems to have problem writing on the 2nd layer as it always fails at around 51%.

Any ideas what might be causing this? Is there any other firmware which is should upgrade / downgrade to or may be cross flash to another firmware?

Would appriciate members advice on this

    Thanks
    SD

    Hi,

for DVD+R DL stick with Verbatim. These are still the most reliable discs.
For older burners, the 2,4x variety (Made in Singapore) are highly recommended.

You need to use Verbatim DL media with the DW1640. It doesn't handle other DL media that well. Verbatim is the only DL media guaranteed to work with the greatest number of DVD burners, old or new. All other DL media is of sub-par quality, and hit or miss in terms of reliability and burn consistency.

  • 1640/1655: best firmware for CD-R burning
  • Question by 13hm13, Monday 13th of October 2008 23:16
I currently use both Benq DW1640 (BSMB) and Benq DW1655 (BCGB) drives. If my primary use is burning audio CD-Rs, what firmware version should I be using for either drive?
Answer by negritude, Thursday 16th of October 2008 06:34
I'd do some burns and tests with different firmware to see which one is best. In general, as long as you're using decent quality media and burn at 16x-24x on 32x-52x media, you shouldn't have any problems (media rated slower than 32x is a separate issue).

Most people here use BSLB or BEFB for the DW1640 because they're best for DVD+R burning, and I don't think there were any significant CD-R burning improvements between them and BSRB.

For the DW1655, BCDB is recommended because it doesn't have certain DVD burning quirks that were introduced in later firmwares, and once again, I doubt much is gained for CD-R burning between that and BCIB.
Answer by DrageMester, Thursday 16th of October 2008 10:01
I have a vague memory of Verbatim (Super) AZO CD-R burn quality improving in either BCHB or BCIB for the BenQ DW1655, but I don't have any of my scans available here to check.

In any case, the DVD burning quirks in those two firmwares made me go back to BCGB which I would recommend along with BCDB unless you enjoy trouble.

I have no opinion on the best formware for the BenQ DW1640.

    Cool

My add...... or any stock firmware. (CD burning is quite a basic task after all, [since cd-r media was introduced to the public in early70's].
But then, some members are abliged to argue anyway....

  • SolidBurn and Write Strategy
  • Question by tiosolid, Sunday 24th of August 2008 22:53
Hi, I just crossflashed my Plextor 740A to a 1640, and now imgburn allows me to use SolidBurn and some other new options. My question is: How does solidburn and those learning media thing works?
Answer by negritude, Tuesday 26th of August 2008 22:32
    Read the BenQ FAQ.
Answer by tiosolid, Tuesday 26th of August 2008 22:40
I already checked that before posting. I learned about the SolidBurn thing, but How Im supposed to "teach" my drive how to burn media and those things? Thats my main question
Answer by qwakrz, Wednesday 27th of August 2008 19:12
    By using the drive...

It learns as it goes (does a quick test write for a quick learn / check of what it learnt before it starts the burn and then keeps modifying its settings very slightly as it does the burn)

  • Cant burn DL Media with my DW1640 (Plex 740A)
  • Question by tiosolid, Thursday 14th of August 2008 13:33
Hi, Im running my DW1640 with the original Plextor 740A 1.02 firmware, and I just cant burn ANY Dual Layer DVD media. Nero always give me a closing session error (something like that) and does not finish writing the disk. The burning process go until 99.9% and while closing the last layer, Nero aborts with a error. I tried two brands of media and It just cant finish writing both of them (with the same error, btw).

So, does anyone knows whats going on? Im planning to crossflash my driver to the BenQ firmware. Is this going to help?
Answer by Albert, Thursday 14th of August 2008 15:59
Which two brands of media did you try?
Answer by tiosolid, Thursday 14th of August 2008 18:05
Matrix and Roma (LOL), both with the same ID: RICOHJPN D00.
Answer by Arachne, Thursday 14th of August 2008 18:13
You may like to try some Verbatim and see how that goes. Smilie
    Answer by 7thSinger, Thursday 14th of August 2008 18:18
Verbatims are all i will use for DL burning.

And maybe give Imgburn a shot.
Answer by tiosolid, Thursday 14th of August 2008 19:28
Verbatim and Tayo here in Brazil are just legends. The last time I saw a verbatim DVD Cake for selling here was never. But anyway im almost sure the problem is the media, since these brands are almost junk, but the IMGBurn idea is very good. Will check when I arrive home Wink

    1. You're using poor quality media. Even worse, if the media wasn't made in Taiwan, it's fake.

    2. Crossflashing to a DW1640 with BSRB will definitely help.

Worked Like a dream. Strangly, in the end of the burning, IMGBurn give me the "closing session" message and stays there for like 4 minutes, and then the DVDs gets finalized. Its strange, but its working now. Thank you Clap
Answer by tiosolid, Tuesday 19th of August 2008 00:58
Sorry for Double posting but this problem raised again, and now with single Layer Media..

Im using Sony media, the best quality out there but now Nero started giving the "cant finalize disc at once session" error again, even with single layer media, and now this problem is REALLY pissing me off. Any sugestion in fixing that?

Try burning at half the rated speed of the disc, IE, 16X burn @8X. Give ImgBurn a shot & last question, do these play at all?

IMGBurn always give me perfect burns even at 16x. about the failed discs from nero, if you put them into the drive nero says its empty and you cant burn them but you can extract all the files just fine using a program like ISOBuster, since the Nero error happens only after burning the entire disc.

I could have been using IMGBurn but I really need a way to save compilations Really Sad

You may be able to close your discs manually in either ImgBurn or Nero so that they can be used as normal.

You can either save an image or save whatever you're building as a project file to resume use later.

Really? How? If I try to burn the disc with just a single file to do this, Nero does not allow me. Didnt try with IMGBurn yet.

And didnt know IMGBurn could save project files! Thanks for the tip bigsmile

    Welcome to CDF.

As mentioned by negritude, try flashing drive to different f/w.
When experiencing problems, it is worth flashing in safemode too.

If CD burning is really important to you.
It may be worth trying crossflashing.
But do this as a last resort.
If drive is on the way out.
This could be the final nail in the coffin.
Answer by designerdavid, Tuesday 30th of September 2008 22:02
I have the same problem, except mine was a phillips 8701 oem. I crossed flashed it to the 1640 f/w after this problem cropped up. Although DVD reading & writing still works great(the audio is actually clearer, now), the drive still won't recognize CD's of any kind (blank, software, audio, etc.). I only have this drive for optical storage, so reading CD's with it is still important.

Where or who did you buy it from? Which firmware did you flash it with? Did you use BQFlasher to do the cross-flash? Did you reboot the computer after flashing and/or turn off and then on the external enclosure?

Also, make sure you're using an 80-pin IDE cable (not 40).

  • BenQ DW1640 can't identify DVD +/- R
  • Question by jackcn, Friday 25th of July 2008 07:10
    Hi, there
Recently, I reinstalled my system with winodws 2003 SP2.After reinstallation, my DW1640 DVD burner can't identify both DVD +/- R disc anymore in Windows 2003. The error figure is here. I tried to run Qsuite from BenQ but it told me "firmware or product not supported". However, I just upgraded firmware to BSRB. Here is the captured screen of QSuite. Is my DW 1640 dead ? Or some wrong driver is used ?
I appreciate anyone's kindly help or advise.
Answer by negritude, Friday 25th of July 2008 08:25
How did you upgrade the firmware? Explain exactly what you did.

I downloaded the firmware from BenQ official site and tried to upgrade on Windows 2003 but it failed. Therefore, I installed DW1640 on my friend's XP and did upgrading successfully. Then, I moved it back to my Windows 2003 but it still did not work. Because I suspected such error caused by some drivers on windows, I reinstalled again but such error still occured. So, I posted it here for help.
Answer by Some Random Guy, Friday 25th of July 2008 15:44
Try uninstalling the IDE channel and then rebooting to see if Windows properly redetects your 1640. If not, you might also try installing another IDE cable if you have one lying around. Preferably 80-conductor (not 40).

Try uninstalling the IDE channel and then rebooting to see if Windows properly redetects your 1640. If not, you might also try installing another IDE cable if you have one lying around. Preferably 80-conductor (not 40).

I really appreciate your hint. After changing IDE cable, It works now.
    Thank you very much.

    Welcome to cdfreaks. Smilie

Think dismantling any of your older CD drive will do the trick... Flower

    Note. Just a hint. Wink

Failing you can't get a belt from an old drive. Visit your local TV/Audio repair shop. I got a suitable replacement belt there. Just take your worn/broken belt along with you so they get the size of the belt.

Thanks for the advice. For now, I'm using the belt from my backup DW1640.

  • Ok to use "B" Fw on 1640 that came with "G" Fw
  • Question by jcusimano2, Monday 30th of June 2008 12:04
I did a couple of searches and didn't find anything my 1640 flashes fine with b firmware but it seems like the performance has dropped. Broken TRT's and not getting full speed burn I flashed to "B" firmware a long time ago and only used this burner to scan now I am going to burn w/it but wanted to see what the deal is with the 2 diff. fw's.

Flashing retail FW on an OEM drive must have been successful for some, like in the link above. Agree

Which specific firmware did you flash it with? Is it being used internally or in an enclosure?

it's working ok in an external 1394 initio fw 4.73
