  • Can't Burn or play any CD's or DVD's (LG GSA-4163B)
  • Hi:

I hope you can help and I thank those in advance for any help you can give me. I have been burning/playing cd's & dvd's for awhile now. When I went to Burn a dvd with DVD Decryptor, the message says "Logical unit not ready, cause not reportable". This is the log:
    I 18:47:06 DVD Decrypter Version 3.5.4.0 started!
    I 18:47:06 Microsoft Windows XP Home Edition (5.1, Build 2600 : Service Pack 3)
    I 18:47:07 Initialising SPTI...
I 18:47:07 Searching for SCSI / ATAPI devices...
    I 18:47:07 Found 1 DVD-RAM/±RW!

Now I can't play any dvd/cd at all, not even with Windows Media Player. It's like the unit isn't there. What are my options?

    Thanks again.

  • Problem with Verbatim DVD RW: Unspecified recorder error
  • Hi,

I've been having troubles with DVD+RW disks and my burner (LG GSA4163B). First of all, it can't format brand new DVD+RW, no problem with DVD-RW.
Problem is, I got 10 Verbatim DVD+RWs before knowing this and I want to use them. I got a friend to format them for me and started using them, but very often I get the "Unspecified recorder error", burning stops at around 60-70% and "Burn process failed". This happens for both single and multisessions.
It seems it can't finish the disks somehow cause when I choose multisession I can't finalize it (the option is grayed out).
I don't multitask (much) and burn at the lowest speeds (x4 max).
My Nero is not the latest (6.6.1.6), but I don't think it's a software problem, cause I've tried with different softs and the same happens.
I'm guessing it's some kind of incompatibility between the burner and DVD+RWs, but I don't get these errors all the time and I'd like to know if I can use these DVDs, and how.
    Thanks a lot in advance!

Don't have one so not much help here but do you have the latest FW installed ? Also you might try going to the burner forum for your brand and you might be able to find the answer there as I am sure someone else has had your problem, Sorry can't help you out on this
    Thanks, I'll post this there.

I've been having troubles with DVD+RW disks and my burner (LG GSA4163B). First of all, it can't format brand new DVD+RW, no problem with DVD-RW.
    Here's the log:

    CdRomPeripheral : HL-DT-STDVDRAM GSA-4163BA102 JRAID Port 4 ID 0 DMA: Off

    This is problem #1:
Running a DVD burner on a Jmicron controller in RAID mode is a bad idea at all, and especially with LG drives of that generation.

    CdRomPeripheral : PJ0274Q SVS731F 2.0B aatvwyzr Port 5 ID 0 DMA: Off

Next problem source. Many of these "virtual drive" softwares like Alcohol or Daemon Tools install routines to "hide" recordable media. Usually, there is a configuration option to disable this feature.

You love messing up your system?

Ok, the drive's firmware is ancient also, but I don't think this is the reason for the issues described here.

  • Firmware AX12 for LG 4163B
  • Hello, after studying the burning statistics for the LG 4163B, i assume, that the Firmware AX12 is the actual [inofficial] Firmware with the best success rate. Am i right? But where can i get/download this desired firmware? My net-research failed. Thanks in advance
    Hi and Welcome!

there are odds, this AX12 firmware does not even exists: http://club.cdfreaks.com/f91/my-lg-4163b-need-help-204069/
Or it is a OEM firmware for a certain market.

In my opinion, these stats do not provide enough evidence to back up a decision for a certain firmware. stick with latest official firmware and good quality media (like Verbatim DVD+R) and you should be fine.

    Michael
    Hello Michael,

    thanks for your instant answer.

It would be desirable, if someone could extract the AX12 Firmware for testing by other user.

But i agree to you, that the stats would be a better advice, if the absolute number of tests for each Firmware were published too.

The intrinsic reason for my post was the hope, that the AX12-Firmware is a modified one, who can handle the newer media that are actually offered in the ordinary stores. But it seems, that i have to modify the software by myself to use media like Verbatim+R DL 8x with this hardware. Otherwise i have to buy a new one...

  • Burn DVD+R DL in LG 4163B
  • HI,

I have a problem when burning DVD+R DL at 4x speed with my LG 4163. Last I burned at 2.4x without error. Do you know what is wrong? Thanks in advance.
Let's start with a burn log if available from what you are using. Just copy & paste into a reply post here. If there is no log available, then we need a whole pile more info.
Knowing the type of DL disks you are using would be extremely helpful. It should be included on a log of the burn...but include it just in case.

  • Help with this Burner! (LG GSA-4163B)
  • total noob to this process and these forums. My documentation for my computer (a gateway) lists my DVD burner as a Hitachi-LG GSA-4163B. My firmware (most recent at gateway for download) is listed as Firmware GA05 Samsung Storage Technology (TSST) DVD +/-RW Dual Layer Drive. Anyone know if this burner is adequate/good for use with CloneCD, Imgburn or DVD Decryptor? I'm using memorex DVD R+ DL discs and i have yet to even get through a burn session let alone test out whether the DVD's work in my 360.
You should try to get Verbatim 2.4x DVD+R DL discs, or [if you can't get those] Verbatim 8x DVD+R DL discs...I doubt that you would be able to get the GSA-4163B to tolerate anything of a lesser quality. Wink They might not even work perfectly with 8x Verbatim discs as the drive is pretty old.

You might want to double check that your individual computer has the GSA-4163B, as Gateway could very easily have used different burners in the same computer models. Smilie
You were right, picked up verbatim disks today and im 3 for 3 for successful backups. Thanks.

  • Various issues with GSA-4163B, difficulties with DVD's (LG GSA-4163B)
  • Question by monkeyshiner , Wednesday 8th of October 2008 04:55
    My system is a
    Intel P4 3.0Ghz with HT,
Jetway PMB 800 motherboard (I think),
    Tiger 350 watt PSU,
Nvidia Geforce FX 5500 256MB graphics card,
2 80GB harddrives, one Seagate, the other Western Digital,
LG GSA-4163B Super Multi DVD burner, supports DL +R read/write.
    2x512MB Mushkin Redline RAM

custom made (but not by me). It was top of the line at the time.

yes the system is overclocked, but I do not believe it is causing any of my issues with the burner or media. It is minorly overclocked to 3.3Ghz or so.

    Software:
    Windows XP SP2
    Nero 6.something
    DVDShrink

Now, I am having multiple issues and it's inspiring me to seek help.

First off, a few years ago I got a Collector's Edition DVD-ROM (DL) movie, worked fine to start with, then six months after I got it,... the drive refused to recognize it as a disc,... it didn't even think it was a blank one, it just didn't exist. But disc 2 of the set (containing misc bonus features, also DL), continued to work just fine. The disc was handled carefully, never scratched or rubbed,.. or dropped, just gently placed in the drive, and retrieved and put back in the case. I handled it personally, and nobody else touched it.
I finally got it recognized by sticking the disc in the freezer, and got it ripped with DVDShrink,... and then I never could get the drive to read that disc again, no matter how much I froze it.
The disc still works fine in standalone players without any errors or problems, years later. At least, a Panasonic DMR-EZ27 1080p upscaling, HDMI, etc, the only standalone DVD player/burner I have.

Next, I backed up a DVD to a Maxell DVD+R, (without verifying, which was stupid). Six months later, the original gone, I went to use the backup... and the drive wouldn't recognize it. However, I saved the disc, and it does play in the standalone, but has some errors here and there that can be skipped over.

And more recently, purchased a 50 pack of Sony DVD+R, rather than the cheaper Ritek or whatever there was, in the hope of getting better quality with a brand name. I had .vob, .bup, etc files on my harddrive, and I wanted to put them directly on a DVD disc, and play them in the standalone. So when I went to burn with Nero Express, Nero warns me that I will likely not have a standalone compatible compilation if I don't use DVD-Video format. With some googling of the error I was able to figure out what it was talking about, and used Nero Burning Rom to start the compilation in DVD-Video format, with high compatibility settings, add the selection of files in, and then switch over to Nero Express (still maintaining the settings from the Burning Rom), so that I can get it to verify. (I am unable to find any settings that allow for a verification after burning using the Burning ROM).

However, this was only the beginning of horrors. The lead-out failed, producing a perfect working disc in my computer, but incompatible with the standalone. I proceed to burn a second disc, and this time enable DVD overburning thinking perhaps it didn't have enough room on the end. This time, lead-out succeeded, and verified just fine, but in the standalone, I still get the same message on the screen "incompatible disc".

So I decided to wait for some advice from you guys before I proceeded any further. Maybe I should just ignore the compilation compatibility error and just try throwing the files in as they are and play it in the standalone?

Btw, in the past I have burned multiple DVD's with .avi's on them and the standalone plays them all just fine, so I know it's not an issue with the media type.

And now, for another issue, just in the past few days. I tried to burn 4.40GB to a 4.37GB disc with overburning enabled. Nero warned me that I could possibly damage my burner, and being impatient with all of this I decided to go ahead and try it anyways. Of course, it failed. Didn't even get to verification. Coaster #1.
I eliminated an extra menu or something, and got it down to 4486MB, and then burned it, and got a perfect disc, verified perfectly and everything. Then I needed a second backup just in case the first failed, as I wanted to delete the original from my harddrive. The horrors begin again. The next 3 DVD's I tried to burn wound up failing verification. And somewhere in the middle of all that, a DVD that had a focus/tracking error in the middle of the burn and didn't even get to verification. Did I just ruin my burner? I'm scared to try burning another one, I don't want to waste discs.

One more thing to note, in the past, all CD's I have tried burning with this burner burned flawlessly, with a variety of different brands, all at max speed.

Oh, and should I be not using Maximum speed (16x) to burn my DVD's? it is all 16x rated media.

    For troubleshooting, don't overclock.

    Software:
    Windows XP SP2
    Nero 6.something

SP3 for XP is available and working. Concerning Nero, make sure you have the latest Nero 6 update from Nero.com installed.

First off, a few years ago I got a Collector's Edition DVD-ROM (DL) movie, worked fine to start with, then six months after I got it,... the drive refused to recognize it as a disc,... it didn't even think it was a blank one, it just didn't exist.

Was this a commercially pressed disc or a burned one. If the latter applies: the disc might just have been degraded. Ritek G05 for example is "famous" for that.

Perhaps this disc has also degraded. Light is one of the enemies for discs.

And somewhere in the middle of all that, a DVD that had a focus/tracking error in the middle of the burn

Please have a look into the FAQ about this issue. Seems as if the drive needs some servicing.

Oh, and should I be not using Maximum speed (16x) to burn my DVD's? it is all 16x rated media.

Apart from not overclocking, not using maximum speed (try 12x or 8x) is another good idea. Agree

    Michael
The drive is very old, maybe it has bit the bullet.

OK, I can do that, also, I just thought of something, would it be worthwhile to flash the firmware? There's probably a new one by now. But I have never done this before.

I said Collector's Edition attempting to make it clear it was high quality... yes it's commercially pressed, original disc. And still works great in standalones.

Just how much of an enemy is it? I keep all my discs in paper slips and they rarely get much light. Although I think that Maxell did get more than it's fair share of light,... it sat out for a while.

I'll definitely try running it a little slower next time.Agree

I should also point out this drive has not had extensive use... I've only burned about 50 discs total (CD's and DVD's), and played random movies, so it's probably not been used more than a few thousand times.

Although I suppose age could be an issue, a friend of mine still uses a CD burner from the 90's, lol

What is the firmware version currently present? A newer firmware is recommended, since media support might improve. Latest firmware for this drive is A106 which is available on http://us.lgservice.com/index_b2c.jsp

I said Collector's Edition attempting to make it clear it was high quality... yes it's commercially pressed, original disc.

    Okay.

And still works great in standalones.

This clearly indicates your drive seems to have reading problems. You might try to clean the lens. And since there is also that "tracking error", you'll have to open the unit anyway.

Just how much of an enemy is it?

One of the worst enemies of a writeable disc.

I should also point out this drive has not had extensive use... I've only burned about 50 discs total (CD's and DVD's), and played random movies, so it's probably not been used more than a few thousand times.

Maybe it has just collected dust.

Although I suppose age could be an issue, a friend of mine still uses a CD burner from the 90's, lol

Build quality was much better these times. Nowadays, there is only cheap plastics where solid metal was used in the "good old times" Wink

First off what is plugged into IDE 1 and IDE 2?? And to use burner on one cable you have to set MS and SL jumpers on them. Also make sure your cable is 80 pin color coded ends. You can use one 80 pin cable just that you have to make sure you have the jumpers set correctly as listed on each burner to function properly.

Could you please provide some information about the IDE controller you have hooked your drive on?
    Reason why I am asking:
Newer Intel chipset mainboards don't have an integrated IDE (P-ATA) controller any more, so the mainboard manufacturers solder a 3rd party chip (often Jmicron) onto their products. These chips often don't play well with optical drives.

You can try to flash it in the pure DOS.
    using A100orig,don't useA106.if success,and to flash to A106.
you can search A100 in forum

but it does't work... it's the same code error (extravagant!)

I've got a diskette with the DOS starter

thanks again but it does't work
You still have not provided the detailled information requested.
The information "Motherboard manufacturer Asrock" is not sufficient at all.

Okay. VIA chipset should do fine (I can confirm that).
Please check if the drive is properly connected and configured:
    - Cable undamaged and the drive is connected to the end connector of the cable. In doubt replace the IDE cable. Must be 18" (46cm) flat ribbon. 80wired is recommended but not mandatory with that drive. No longer cables, no rounded ones.
    - Jumper on the drive is set to Master
    - verify your drive is really a GSA-4163 (look on the sticker). There is also a GWA-4163, that's why I request you to double check.

In case VIA IDE drivers are installed, get rid of them.

but i can't buy a new device... it worked very well and it is a pity..Really Sad

    thanks in advance!

  • Problem in reading 8.5GB discs with LG 4163B DVD Writer
  • Hi
I have LG GSA-4163B flashed to latest firmware released from LG i.e, A106.
Ever since i bought this DVD writer I have been facing issues in reading
8.5gb DVDs which have silver colored recording surface.
Generally these are the DVDs which come along with computer Magazines like Digit, Chip etc and also some Movie discs.

    Details:

    System OS: winXP with SP3.

In the Device properties dialog under Driver tab i can see

    Driver Provider: Microsoft
    Driver Date: 7/1/2001
    Driver Version: 5.1.2535.0
Digital Signer: Microsoft windows Component Publisher.

    Driver files:
    cdrom.sys
    imapi.sys
    storprop.dll and
    redbook.sys

all files have file version as 5.1.2600.3311 (xpsp.080212-0003)

But the blue colored 8.5gb discs read/open without any trouble
and there is no trouble with 4.7gb discs in read/write.

What format is these silver colored discs are?

and why the writer does not recognize these disc easily?

need help in fixing this problem.

The format should be the same or almost the same iso9660, joliet or udf.
Maybe your drive is getting old or it need some cleaning.
    Hi
but this problem is there ever since i bought that writer some 2.5- 3 years back
If you needed to fix this problem i guess that you should have returned the drive, right now the best answer i can give you was in post number 2.

  • GSA-4163B and DVD+R problems
  • Hello all.

I've had my LG GSA-4163B drive for about 4 years now, and until recently I've never had a problem with it.

I tried to burn to a Phillips DVD+R and all seemed to go smoothly as always, until I tested the disc. The drive began to read it, and my machine slowed to a crawl for about 5 minutes. After everything returned to "normal", i tried accessing the disc and I just recieved a message telling me there was no disc in the drive.

This has happened about ten times now (I tested burning different things).

I've never had a problem with DVD+R before, and although I read somewhere that this drive has issues with certain brands of media, I figured Phillips would be fine (you know, big name brand, invented the things etc), in fact the first couple of times I burnt to one, it worked fine. But the thing is, I bought some really cheap CD-RW's from a supermarket and they worked fine.

Does anyone have any idea's? I dont want to buy a new batch of dvd's, because I've got 200 of these things sat round, and i really don't want to buy a new drive (despite them being cheaper than salt at the moment, I guess I'm just tight!! ).

    Incase this helps, here's my (rather old) system spec;

    AMD Athlon XP 2800+
    2GB RAM
    ASUS A7N8X-Deluxe (Nforce2).
    GeForce 6200

Windows XP SP3 + all other recent updates

Nero 8 (though I've also tried version 6, and alcohol, plus a whole bunch of freeware programs, all with the same effect).

    Any ideas? Thanks guys!
Philips generally doesn't make the discs. They brands media made by the actual manufacturers, and usually brand media made by CMC Magnetics. Now, while CMC Magnetics makes media for others [not with their own technology], their OWN discs aren't always so good.

I suggest slowing down the write speed, if you haven't already, to 8x or even 6x.

    If that doesn't work:
I suggest trying out a different brand, preferably Verbatim. Some Verbatim is made by CMC, but using Verbatim's technology, so you don't usually have to worry about quality issues. If that does work, return your discs. If that doesn't work, post back.

If you have no way of returning the discs, go get another writer. The LG GSA-4163B requires pristine media, and is not the best drive for "sub-par" media such as your Philips. Suggested drives for writing "sub-par" media: LiteOn, Pioneer, or Optiarc.
Awh, I didn't want to have to buy a new one!! Frown But, oh well. Smilie

Thanks for the speedy reply. Yeah, I tried slowing the burn speed down. I never burn at full speed anyway because i've nearly always knackered the disc doing that (not just on this burner either).

I've no way of returning the discs, so I guess i'm dvd burner shopping tomorrow during lunch!!

    Thanks again! Smilie
Now, make sure you just try one burn with the new drive, whatever it may be, and see if that works. If it doesn't work, for whatever reason, you can probably return the new drive [though I wouldn't recommend it for writing the media you have]. Smilie
I'll bear that in mind. Smilie

    Cheers again!!
The drive is kinda obsolete now.
Don't expect it to work with latest media.

  • LG GSA-4163B, DVD only burn at 4 times
  • Previously had used philipps DVD+R blank DVD's which allowed me to burn from 4 to 16 times speed.
Now i have bought fujifilm DVD+R blank DVD's which only allow me to burn at 4 times.
I have upgraded my firmware to A106 and have also followed the steps in the following thread: http://club.cdfreaks.com/f91/fujifilm-dvd-r-16x-recognized-4x-gsa-h22n-gsa-4163b-203760/

none of this has helped so if anybody could please help i would be very greatful.
Which media code so your disks have ? You can use cdspeed or DVDIdentifier to find out the media code (MID).
    ok, it says:

    manufacturer name: Ritek Corp
    manufacturer ID: Ritek
    media type ID: F16

umm, don't really know what that means
i read somewhere about ritek dvd's not being too great
    so what's up with this?
Looking at the A106 firmware with MediaCodeSpeedEdit, it would appear that the RITEK F16 MID isn't supported.

Unless you want to get into swapping strategies (which I'd say isn't worth it for that burner and those discs - the 4163B does best when fed quality media), I'd say you're stuck with the 4x.
these drives below can be patched RPC1 with MCSE
    if download offical firmware.

    From MCSE website and/or webpage(s):

    "RPC1 patch for
    - LG GSA-4164/4166/H2x/H3x/H5x
    - Pioneer 111/112/115/212/215
    - Samsung SH-S20x, TS-H65x, SH-S18x, SN-S082x, SE-T084x, TS-L632x
    - SONY DVD RW DRU-840A SS01"

    URL to MCSE: http://ala42.cdfreaks.com/MCSE/
i see that the 4163 isnt included in that list
    lol
oh well, i'll just use these dvds for something else
i just bought another DVD+R pack nad they work just fine.
so now im stuck with 50 extra dvd's haha.
well thanks for the help guys
    much appreciated.
