  • New!Dvd-ram doesn't load or read anything
  • Question by jayturmel, Sunday 5th of October 2008 16:47
The Lg gsa h55n install on my Pc doesn't load any cd or dvd, of anykind. The green led flash when I open and close it, but that's all. Is it already dead ??

    Welcome to CDF Smilie

Can you try booting from your OS disc? That would eliminate any software problem within Windows.

Has the drive ever worked? If it did, has anything changed with hardware or software on your PC?

Does it act the same with both blank and burned/store bought discs?

Last ditch thing to try would be to put the drive in a different PC and see if it works there.

  • New!Diagnose This GSA-H55N Problem?
  • Question by Mcknigs, Tuesday 23rd of September 2008 19:34
I bought this drive from an Amazon seller in January. It has the ability to burn dual-layer DVDs. I was using the Sonic CD-DVD burning software that came with my Dell. It worked fine to burn CDs and single-layer DVDs. The software did not recognize dual-layer DVDs.

This past weekend I bought newer Roxio CD-DVD burning software that could burn to dual layer disks, Using some Office-Max dual-layer DVDs I was able to burn several (5-6) DL data DVDs. Then (using the same media, only minutes after the last successful burn) I started getting errors that the media were bad. I attempted to burn several DVDs, each time the process ended quickly with the error. I tried burning a data CD and had the same problem. It is apparent from looking that some writing was taking place, but after varying period of time the process stopped. The ability to read from the drive appeared to become intermittent too.

I tried shutting down the machine for a while in case it was a heat-related problem, and I tried reinstalling the burning software. After reinstalling things went better - I was able to succesfully burn a CD and the DVD burned for longer, but I still couldn't finish burning 6 gig-worth of data to a DL DVD without getting the bad media error.

Any reason you can think of that the burner would work one minute but not the next?

    TIA,
    -Scott

    Welcome to the forum Smilie

Too bad DL media have a... "little" problem: all brands except Verbatim are crap. Moreover, if you use DL -R discs you risk to create a media that your standalone is not able to read at all, so you must use DL +R discs changing booktype in ROM to get the maximum compatibility.

My suggestion is to use only Verbatim DL +R discs, and if you want the best software I suggest ImgBurn (it's free and not bloated with a lot of useless features like Roxio or Nero).

Another thing you must check is your PSU. LG drives are rather picky with the power supply, and if your PSu is not enough stable the drive is not able to work correctly. Don't check only the total wattage of the PSU, but also its reliability. Usually the "el cheapo" PSU are not exactly a good choice, because are not able to supply enough power to the system even if are rated for a high wattage.

I hope that this can help Smilie

Good to know that about Verbatim disks. I'm not sure whether I have DL +R or -R but all the DVDs that I was able to burn successfully played fine in my standalone. I don't understand the part about changing booktype. Given that the first ones worked is this an issue?

My suggestion is to use only Verbatim DL +R discs, and if you want the best software I suggest ImgBurn (it's free and not bloated with a lot of useless features like Roxio or Nero).

I wish I had known about ImgBurn before I bought the Roxio burner. Frown

Do you think the power supply in the Dell would not be up to the task? Is there a reason to believe that the PS would have gotten me through the burning of several DL DVDs before causing problems? I wonder if temorarily unplugging the second CD drive and/or second hard drive would relieve the demand on the DVD burner so that I could successfully burn more discs...

I hope that this can help Smilie

    Many thanks. Smilie

    oops Embarrassment

I had no idea that you have a Dell computer. For what I know the PSU is good enough to run the system Flower

As first start I think that you should do some tests with Verbatim discs. This should solve the problem.

To know what discs are you using at the moment, you can use CD-DVD Speed or ImgBurn itself to check the mediacode. in ImgBurn the mediacose can be found as shown in the picture Smilie

  • Writing with HL-DT-ST DVD-RAM GSA-H55N drive
  • Question by vettri54, Tuesday 23rd of September 2008 09:56
I am using HL-DT-ST DVD-RAM GSA-H55N. During a recent DVD writing, it started well with 'Lead-in' and completed 100% writing, while lead-out, it gave an error message and ejected the disc. Now the DVD disc is not readable but Nero8 says it is a blank disc. Can you help me to solve this problem.  Will updating the firmware, solve this problem? If so where can I get the firmware update. - Vettriselvan
Answer by bjkg, Tuesday 23rd of September 2008 10:49
    @ vettri54,

    Welcome to the Forum.

What is the Media MID (Manufacture ID and Media Code) (Example:TYG02) of the particular Media you are attempting to use. To obtain Media MID (Manufacture ID and Media Code) (Example:TYG02) suggest using a utility software program similar to DVDInfo (http://www.dvdinfopro.com).

Concerning DVD Burner Firmware -> To obtain the optimal performance of your DVD Burner it is always important to have the latest most current up to date Firmware available installed in your DVD Burner.

For information concerning your LG GSA-H55N DVD Burner Firmware visit the CD Freak dedicated LG DVD Burner Forum (http://club.cdfreaks.com/f91/) and refer to the “Read First” postings in that Forum ->

  • LG GSA-H55N: Inserting media causes PC to shutdown
  • Question by wotnots, Thursday 4th of September 2008 18:03
When I load a CD or DVD, the system immediately shuts down. I have to disconnect the power for a few minutes to get the computer to reboot.
Can someone help a novice, please?
Answer by CDuncle, Thursday 4th of September 2008 19:20
It would seam that your burner is not installed properly.
Go to Windows manager and under Devices see if there is a question mark around your drive.
Is this a new drive, just installed?
Also are the jumpers correctly set for cable? Are you using 80 wire cable?
Are more devices on the same cable?
    Answer by Psycho6, Thursday 4th of September 2008 19:25
    nevermind.. already answered
Answer by Albert, Thursday 4th of September 2008 20:48
Also, how old is your system? Did it come pre-built by a big brand [Dell, HP, etc], or is it self-built?

Is the drive new, or old? Any recent events that may have caused this phenomenon to begin?
Answer by wotnots, Friday 5th of September 2008 11:00
The PC is self built. The jumpers are correct. There is no question mark against the drive in Device manager, I have checked the driver and it says it is OK. There are no more devices on the same cable.
Thanks for your answers but I am still no further forward.
Answer by CDuncle, Friday 5th of September 2008 14:25
Did you install any software, like Alcohol or similar recently?
When did this started to happen?
    What OS are you running?
Answer by wotnots, Wednesday 10th of September 2008 14:17
Windows xp home. I have not installed any new software relating to CD/DVD lately
Answer by Albert, Wednesday 10th of September 2008 14:32

  • GSA-H55N won't burn any faster than 2x
  • Question by jordanneff, Thursday 21st of August 2008 02:29
Hi everyone, I'm new to these forums. I looked around the web for this problem and had no results and people said this was the best place to go for my problem so hopefully some experts here will know how to help bowdown

So basically I have an LG GSA-H55N drive. My computer reads it as 'HL-DT-ST DVD-RAM GSA-H55N' and the firmware is version 1.05. Now I've burned a few dvds since I installed this, and all of them seemed to take like 40 minutes. For a 20x writer (albeit limited to 16x because of my media) it should not take anywhere near this long. Obviously.

At first I thought it might be a driver or firmware issue so I looked around and found that my firmware and drivers seem to both be up to date. Nero reads the drive as being capable of burning at 16x. I even ran the nero speed test but it shows it burning at a solid 2x and then somewhere shortly after 2GB have been burned it plummits to only around 1x. 1x!!!! wtf

I have no idea what to do. I've tried burning dvds at 16x, 8x, 4x, 'Maximum' but still they all take around 40 minutes. It's insane. Oh and in case someone asks about the media I'm using, I'm using HP DVD-Rs. They work fine on my two other computers as well as my friends computer so I really don't think it is the media. Also I got one of my friends Verbatim DVD-Rs and tried that just to see and had the same exact problem. Can someone please help me here? I have no idea how to get this working.

    Welcome to CDF Smilie

Sounds like UDMA Mode might not be enabled - see the link in my signature ("How to check/enable DMA") for instructions on how to get it enabled again Smilie
Answer by jordanneff, Thursday 21st of August 2008 05:48
Thank you thank you, I cannot thank you enough. At first setting the IDE to DMA if applicable didn't work, and after about 4 reboots I was getting angry but I delved deeper into the issue and checked out your thread about uninstalling it using another method, and from there followed a method editing the registry keys for the device and after a reboot is it working and burning at correct speeds.

For anyone who may read this in the future and is having the same issue, try arachne's method for enabling DMA, and if that doesn't work then search for a way to override enabling DMA editing the registry.

Oh, and once again, thank you!

  • LG GSA-H55N does not detect/read DVD Movies
  • Question by Katastrophe66, Tuesday 19th of August 2008 07:44
My LG GSA-H55N DVD writer will not detect, read, or play DVD movies. DVD movies are not detected and will not open/play in My Computer, Power DVD, VLC, or Windows Media Player. However, it will run and install video games and software from both CDs and DVDs. It will burn data CDs. I believe it is on firmware 1.03. Please help! Is there anything I can do, or is my hardware defective?

  • Is my GSA-H55N defect?
  • Question by Lhurgoyf, Friday 8th of August 2008 16:42
Write quality of my H55N with Philips 16x DVD R(CMC) and Memorex 16x DVD-R(CMC) is not good at 8 and 16x buring. I see high levels of PIE and PIF towards the end of the disc. Is it defective writer unit or it does not like these medias?
Answer by Arachne, Friday 8th of August 2008 16:51
It's more than likely the media. I'd try to avoid 16x burning with those discs.

Try some Verbatim or Sony at those speeds, and see if things improve. Wink

  • DVD writer burning way to slow
  • Question by kevuken, Tuesday 5th of August 2008 14:25
Recently i experienced that my dvd writer is not able to write the dvds. Formerly i used different brands of dvds. But finally i sticked to MOSERBAER DVD-R. I had already brought 30 dvds. But the problem is that when i used Nero 7 to write the dvd with some AVI files, i realised that it almost took some 35 minutes and shown me that to complete the time remaining is some hundreds of hours. I also noted that the speed at which the disc is writing is 5kbps. I dont know what to do. My LG dvd writer is a new one which i bought just 2 months back.
[ I had already verified that under the IDE ATA/ATAPI controllers the transfer mode is set to DMA]
Every suggestion is so valuable for me because iam a newbie.

  • GSA H55N not reading dvd+r burned on vista
  • Question by demon10101, Wednesday 30th of July 2008 12:49
Hi guys I'm new to this forum. As the title suggests, I am not able to read dvd+r data disk i burned on vista using nero 7 using the same drive. I tested the disk on my laptop which is running XP and it worked. I reformatted my computer and installed windows XP pro and tested the disk but it did not work. I also have my ASUS motherboard driver dvd-rom which would not work too. I have come across people with the same problem on the forum but could not find a way to fix this. Help please!

    Welcome to CD Freaks. Smilie

Be patient...your thread has only been here 3 hours. An immediate response to a thread is not guaranteed. Wink

What media [blank discs] are you using? What write speed? Did you install anything on your desktop that you didn't on your laptop? What laptop drive do you have?
Answer by vroom, Wednesday 30th of July 2008 16:27
Can the drive read -R media or other brands of +R media?
    Answer by demon10101, Thursday 31st of July 2008 11:35
Nope. No dvds work on it. I kept inserting and removing the asus disk for about six times at at the last time, it actually worked! I removed it and inserted it again and it won't work again. wierd. I tried burning a song to imation dvd+r's at all burn speeds to each (i have plenty of dvds). After burning i tried everyone but as expected, they don't work. I tried them on my asus W5F and they worked! I'm sure there are people with the same problem as I do.
    Answer by demon10101, Thursday 31st of July 2008 11:39
Hmm Potterhouse (a computer part e-retailer in Singapore) just contacted me that they would be sending me the latest LG dvd drive they have as they did not have the GH20LS10 but still charge me $55 (Sing Dollars)! Hopefully I wouldn't have the same problem with my new drive. If I do i would suspect my generic 450W PSU isn't performing well enough.

EDIT: I suspect they would be sending me a GH22LP20 instead of the GH20LS10
    Answer by demon10101, Thursday 31st of July 2008 11:44
My laptop has hardly any programs. No Nero 7, steam, MagicISO (the version for mounting images only)
    Answer by demon10101, Thursday 31st of July 2008 13:06
Ok, just installed the GH22LP20 and it works great! I could use my asus driver dvd and my data dvd+r's! My advice to the people who had my problem is to buy another drive.

this looks like a bad IDE cable.
Check, if it is properly connected and if it is not damaged. In doubt, replace it (you need an 80wired flat ribbon 18" (46cm)).

    @ venki22,

You have made 3 different Forum postings concerning your DVD ‘Slow’ burning problem.

To effectively troubleshoot your DVD ‘Slow’ burning problem you should only make one Forum posting that contains all the pertinent information instead of spreading out information in numerous Forum postings. Spreading out information in 3 different Forum posting only makes it difficult for Forum Member to fully understand your complete problem and be able to provide meaningful assistance to you.

From reviewing you original Forum posting titled “i'm having problem with the burning of dvd using LG GSA H55N writer” (http://club.cdfreaks.com/f61/i-m-having-problem-burning-dvd-using-lg-gsa-h55n-writer-248901/#post2095923) it appears that you have some type of Software/Windows Operating System error cause by a faulty installation of the Need for Speed II game. Suggest focusing your efforts in correcting whatever caused the “Windows Has Been Damaged Severely” error notification. Until you effectively correct your Software/Windows Operating System “Windows Has Been Damaged Severely” problem you will continue to experience problems. Have you attempted to revert back to a Windows “Restore” point prior to the faulty installation of the Need for Speed II game?

Also suggest contacting the Forum Moderator to consolidate your 3 different Forum posting into one Forum posting.

Read speeds aren't that fast with the LG series drives but a great speed burner. I'll PM you with the link as it is to my server and I don't want an overload. This will be the patched firmware you want.

You can get the firmware for your drive, and then patch it with MCSE, and you are ready to go, it's very simple, just follow the instructions that you will find here.

I have a feeling that the DMA mode went into PIO though with 3x ripping speed right now. We'll see though.

  • GSA-H55N Finalizing Problem
  • Question by Yorel, Monday 14th of July 2008 06:58
I recently bought a GSA-H55N because my old burner was getting progressivly weaker burns causing some playback problems in my stand alone player. Every single burn would complete, but would lock up my PC tighter than Mother Superior's Drawers. I pulled it out, put in my old burner, and burned as I had before . I exchanged the H55N with another, and ran into the same issue. I then installed a new Pioneer Burner I had bought at the same time as my H55N, and wonder of wonders, NO issues.

I'm wondering if it may be a conflict with the Athlon 64X2 Dual core 3600 or MB., 1.87 Gigs Ram.

I use Copy2DVD exclusively for my burning.

Anyone able to shed some light on this?

    Thanks
