Question byzoomyman, Tuesday 30th of September 2008 22:51
Hello,
Looks like I've got a problem with my HL-DT-ST DVDRAM GSA-T20N - can not re-format the CD-RW. Nero tries to access the drive for a while (much longer than usual) and finally when the media is reformatted and filled with some data the verification process fails saying that it's not possible to read some sectors. Tried several programs such as Nero, Super Blank and ImgBurn. Using Memorex media. Any ideas?

How many times have you used (ie recorded to and re-written to) this disc? It's possible that it has exceeded its workable life.
Answer byAlbert, Tuesday 30th of September 2008 23:20
And is it 4x rated, or greater that 4x rated?
Answer byzoomyman, Tuesday 30th of September 2008 23:24
Brand new 4x. Just opened the box.
Tried one more from the same box - the same result. Now trying the third one... Hope there is the problem with media, not with the drive. I'll let know about the result.
Answer byAlbert, Tuesday 30th of September 2008 23:30
Insert one of these discs, run Nero CD-DVD Speed, navigate to the Disc Info tab, and tell us what it gives you as the manufacturer of the disc [for example, the manufacturer of the disc in the attached screenshot is Ritek].
Answer bypinto2, Tuesday 30th of September 2008 23:35
Forget Nero verify function when we talk about -RW* media.
Simply make a test; copy back the burned file(-s) to your HD and compare originals with copyed using tools like md5summer.
* This mostly because it all depens on if you burn a single or a multi session disc (open/closed track).
Answer byzoomyman, Tuesday 30th of September 2008 23:38
I have done some tests. Please take a look... As i can see those 2 medias were just crap. Just made me waste your and mine time
Answer byAlbert, Tuesday 30th of September 2008 23:42
Yep, CD-RW made by Infodisc is far from the best stuff. A simple media switch to some Verbatim or Sony CD-RW should give you some usable discs.
Answer byimkidd57, Tuesday 30th of September 2008 23:45
Indeed.
Hence the phrase: "Is it shite... or is it Memorex?".
Answer byzoomyman, Tuesday 30th of September 2008 23:47
Thank you for your time guys. Looks like it's not a good idea to save a few pounds on a media. I will not be surprised if this disk will not be readable in a couple of weeks.

ROTFLMAO
I was about to voice my opinion on Infodisc, but I see you guys already did it for me
As Albert suggested, a switch to Sony or Verbatim would be a good idea

Crap...
AFAICR, GSA-T20N doesn't support C1/C2 CD disc quality scanning (not with Acer firmware anyway).
BTW guys; does latest Verbatim's MID, CMC Magnetics taste any better then Infodisc.

Actually, yes, it does. It tends to last for a few more writes than Infodisc [which only lasts 1].
Ideally, I would suggest only Sony, but we have to give the posters options.

Question byMattbot2, Saturday 16th of August 2008 10:35
Hello,
Last night I tried to make an ISO of Sim City 4 as when i'm on business trips, I can't carry round all of my games so I keep them on my hard drive. A-Ray scanner detected Safedisk 2.8 so in Alcohol 120% I put the "Safedisk 2/3/4" option. It started up normally with a lot of the read errors that you do get with these things. It got to 1 hour and 15 minutes and it was about 1.8% done. Can anyone tell me what's happening here? I've made images before using the same process and it's taken less time. Any ideas?
Thanks a lot,
Matt

Why so complicated? Make a normal copy of the CD and use a No-CD patch. I did this with my Notebook since I did not want to put always the CD in when I played it.
The problem with SimCity4 (and the problem is harder with the Add On Rush Hour) that the copy protection handling has a lot bugs. I could not install the Rushhour addon in normal mode under XP. I had to use the safe mode.
Only a hint to the moderators: I have both as original, SimCity and Rush Hour. If you want I can take a picture with the current newspaper to see I tell the truth

Putting it onto my hard drive is by far the easiest way under my circumstances.
I have Sim City 4 Deluxe Edition so both the game and the add on are installed together.
Any ideas anyone?

If it's a safedisc protected cd there will be read errors. Just be patient and let the reading process complete.

Okay, thanks mate. It just seemed a little long to be 2% in at 1hr 15mins. I'll try again now.
Answer byMattbot2, Wednesday 20th of August 2008 12:57
Okay just left it for like 3 hours and it's done, just seeing if it's working now.
Hmm, hasn't worked. I've mounted it. And nothing i seem to do makes the game load. Any ideas? I put the profile on Safedisk 2/3/4
Answer byphilamber, Thursday 21st of August 2008 02:53
You'll probably need to use YASU or something similar. See kalas' guide.
Answer byMattbot2, Thursday 21st of August 2008 09:52
Hmm. That still didn't work.
can anyone think of what i'm doing wrong?

What is the exact problem? The created ISO file does not install? You get error messages during setup....
Answer bySeanW, Thursday 21st of August 2008 12:47
I remember ripping a copy of SC4 for backup purposes. It can be done, I used CloneCD, I made sure to let it take Subchannel data. It did take several hours to do the rips but I was able to make perfect copies afterward. Ended up with a trio of files that amounted to over well 800MB.

It doesn't respond to anything. I double click on it once mounted, nothing. Go into it and click the exe, nothing.
Just wont respond to anything.

Anyone?
Answer byTM, Sunday 24th of August 2008 19:31
I say it again what I posted in my first post:
The Copy protection (working during setup) is very buggy. I tried to install SimCity+Rushhour on my PC and I got always an error during setup (corrupted file). The setup worked perfect on an other PC. At least I checked the internet (since I did not get the game installed) and found a lot other people having exactly the same issue.
I installed the game in safe mode of Win XP. I did not have any CD emulators installed on this machine or 1:1 copy tools like Clone CD.
I recommend it again, install the game and use a no CD patch.
The game is really cool, no question, but the copy protection is really crappy. Even the original media makes problem...
Life is to short to make ISO files of copy protected CDs of games....
