Problems & Support for this product

You can find all the questions that have been asked about the Lite-On SHW-160P6S below.
  • New!Anyway to get better writes with this crap media? (Memorex DVD+R DL 8x RITEK S04)
  • Question by shawnmos, Monday 29th of September 2008 04:21
I have a Liteon SHW-160P6S crossflashed to a SHM-165P6S. From now on I will only get Verbatim discs but in the meantime what can I do to get the best results possible out of the RITEK S04 discs with my burner? I enabled Force Hyper Tuning and Online Hyper Tuning and burned at 4x and got this result:

    General Information
    Drive: LITE-ON DVDRW SHM-165P6S
    Firmware: MS0R
    Disc: DVD+R DL (RITEK S04)
    Selected speed: 8 X
    PI errors
    Maximum: 677
    Average: 72.05
    Total: 2152883
    PI failures
    Maximum: 208
    Average: 1.22
    Total: 290765
    PO failures: n/a
    Jitter: n/a
    Scanning Statistics
    Elapsed time: 17:07
    Number of samples: 198197
    Average scanning interval: 1.21 ECC
    Glitches removed: 20

Doing a force burn at 2.4x resulted in an unreadable disc. Should I burn at 8x? Disable Force Hyper Tuning and/or Online Hyper Tuning? Thanks.
Answer by Albert, Monday 29th of September 2008 04:26
If you have a few discs left, you can try upping the write speed like you thought [probably not a good idea, though], strategy swapping, or burn a few more discs with only HyperTuning enabled to see if the drive can possibly learn the media [for this, you would have to burn about 4 discs at the same speed to see the results].
    Answer by chaosoffar2k, Monday 29th of September 2008 05:00
4x SmartBurn off, HT OHT OS on
That would be my recommendation. Haven't burned many DLs but those settings work great for single layer discs.
Answer by shawnmos, Monday 29th of September 2008 05:16
What would turning Smart Burn off do? Also, Albert when you say only Hyper Tuning enabled do you mean the Force Hyper Tuning or Online Hyper Tuning. I've got about 13 more of these discs.
Answer by cd pirate, Monday 29th of September 2008 09:06
Damn all that Liteon stuff is useless, it bothers me that they have so many strategies and little tweaks that can be performed yet they hardly make a difference for me.

Just use a Pioneer, beats all of liteons special settings without the hassle lol.

I advise to disable ALL of the settings and only use the stock standard settings. Activate stuff and mess around after you have exhausted all other options. Sometimes the stock settings work fine and all that hyper stuff screws it around.
Answer by Womi, Monday 29th of September 2008 14:44
As cd pirate said, LiteOns arent the best DL burners, especially for non Verbatim DLs.

But with Ritek DL media it's a hit or miss too. Some batches can be quite good while others fail at the layer break.
Answer by shawnmos, Monday 29th of September 2008 22:39
Here are 2 Verbatim DLs that I burned at 2.4x with the first one having Force Hyper Tuning and Online Hyper Tuning turned on and the second one with them off.

I don't really know if the results can be compared across media but it seems it does better with them turned on. I would have thought that the Verbatims would have scored better though. I guess my burner just sucks.
Answer by Albert, Monday 29th of September 2008 22:41
LiteOns are tolerant, but not great, DL burners. The A1 series was pretty good with DL burning, but the rest are pretty much just OK, in my experience. They can make great burns, but they are not as consistent as [comparing today's drives] the Pioneer x12/x15 series and the Optiarc 7200 series.
Answer by shawnmos, Thursday 2nd of October 2008 01:09
Any recommendations on doing changing the writing strategy? Pretty much all of the RITEK S04 discs I burn have a result similar to that which I posted (though most aren't as bad), where it starts out acceptable but gets bad toward the end of the layer. Also for some reason, the second layer results are much better than that of the first layer.

edit: Nevermind, it looks like OmniPatcher doesn't support my drive.
Answer by juancdg, Thursday 2nd of October 2008 02:18
Hi. I also had the same problem. You can go with a Pioneer DVR-115/215, it does a good job with Ritek DL media. I tried with the LiteOn's default settings (SB enabled) and the result was terrible.

All newegg has is the 116 and 216.
Is the 116/216 this years model? What's the difference?

Can someone explain the media strategies to me? Do they contain more info than just what write speeds to use? Here are the available media codes that I can swap the Ritek S04-66 with:

116/216 are the latest ones, check the Pioneer section.

  • Lite On SHW 16p6s recording problem
  • Question by photofool, Friday 5th of September 2008 07:15
I haven't found the answer to this specific problem on the forum (though it probably has come up before).

The Lite-On SHW 16p6s in my PC (Windows XP) plays DVDs well makes nice video DVDs from Nero or CloneDVD.

It also has no problem playing CD-Rs and has always burned data CDs (click on the data file, then "Send To" drive E, and then burn a CD from the temporary file).

My problem is that I have never been able to burn data to DVD. I've tried both CVD-R and +R, and neither works. I have the latest Lite-On firmware installed (ps0C).

When I try to make a data DVD, I get "Window encountered a problem when trying to copy this file" either when I try to send the file to the DVD-RW drive, or, if I do mange to get data into a temporay file, it doesn't recognize the DVD media when I attempt to write the files to the disc ("insert writable CD").

The driver installed is from Microsoft, version 5.52535.0 (July 2001). No updated driver is apparently available (at least so says the Windows update "wizard").

So.... what am I doing wrong ? Why can't I make a data DVD just like I make a data CD ?

I saw one bit of info in the forum about problems with the XP Windows "CD writing service", and setting imapi to "manual". Could that be the problem (and if so, how do I find and re-set imapi ?).

    Any help appreciated !
    Really Sad
    Answer by pfloyd1, Friday 5th of September 2008 13:50
You cannot burn to a dvd just using windows xp. You need a burning app like Nero or Imgburn.

What media was used, and has a slower burn speed been tried? You might try a different firmware too. I have a SHM-165P6S that generated about 50% coasters with 16x Playo +R with latest firmware, but all burn fine with the next latest firmware. Also I get best SL burns with SmartBurn disabled.
Answer by hyphyjuice, Friday 5th of September 2008 01:56
    hey, thanks for the response....

the media i tried to burn are just a bunch of random mp3 tracks that i compiled to put on cd...i tried different burn speeds and also updated my firmware, nothing seems to have changed...still gets about 4-6% in and then craps out....any other ideas?

    thanks

p.s. i dont know what smart burn is or how to disable it

    My $.02 worth:

I never had much success using CD-RW. I use CD-R, no multisession and I finalize the disc.

To eliminate any problems with Nero, you might try burrrn which is highly recommended by many CDF members (Note: I regularly use Nero but I use Nero 8).

  • Lite-On SHW-160P6S: Dual layer DVDs are not recognized after driver update
  • Question by harmer315, Thursday 28th of August 2008 22:16
hi i have a lite on shw 160p6su dvd burner im trying to burn games using img burn and also tried clonecd which i saw in the forums on here. first i would trie to burn it and it would come up with an error on both programs. on img burn it would say something about the LO or the layer break. but i then tried to clean my dvd burner and installed the newest firm ware and now it wont read any dual layer disc but it will regualar cds and i cant even try to burn a game because img burn wont recognize my dual layer disc and i am using memorex dvd+r dl disc

any help or ideas would be great thanks
Answer by Albert, Thursday 28th of August 2008 22:30
Probably too late to tell you, but Memorex DL isn't a good choice for DL media....

How did you try to clean the drive, and to what firmware did you update?
    Answer by harmer315, Thursday 28th of August 2008 22:55
i heard that verbatim was a good brand for burning games. i just took the dvd burner apart just blew a little bit near the leans incase there was any dust i double checked and i hooked every thing back up right but it wont read any disc now
    Answer by harmer315, Thursday 28th of August 2008 23:23
when i try to burn in img burn it says no medium present at the bottom of the screen i think i may have made my dvd worse than it was and i loaded http://us.liteonit.com/us/index.php?option=com_wrapper&Itemid=153
    as the firmware
Answer by Albert, Thursday 28th of August 2008 23:24
Try a SMALL (!!!!!!) amount of rubbing alcohol [such as the kind used for disinfecting minor cuts, etc] on the end of a Q-tip/cotton swab, and GENTLY wipe the laser lens off with it [being sure to dry the lens completely using only the dry end of the Q-tip] and try again. Also, triple check that you have re-connected every cable; something may have become loose without your notice.
    Answer by harmer315, Thursday 28th of August 2008 23:46
no luck i tried a small amount of rubbing alcohol and dried it but it sounds like its trying to read the disc then makes an odd click and repeats itself for 6 times then stops
Answer by Albert, Thursday 28th of August 2008 23:50
If this is with all DVDs--and not just with those Memorex DL discs--you will probably have to get another burner.

  • Think I bricked my drive
  • Question by RCM, Saturday 16th of August 2008 06:23
Well, somehow my powercord got pulled out while I was flashing firmware, and I have tried everything in the threads to recover it, but all I get is a flashing green light!
Drive is a Lite-On SHW-160P6S Help me please! Really Sad
    Answer by bevills1, Saturday 16th of August 2008 18:16
Try FlashFix from http://club.cdfreaks.com/f44/comprehensive-liteon-tools-collection-v5-0-7-revised-8-january-2007-a-83441/. Note FlashFix doesn't work with newer firmwares, and you'll need to run it on older firmware. If FlashFix is successful, you may then flash to desired firmware.
Answer by RCM, Sunday 17th of August 2008 01:33
Tried, with no luck, the only thing it did was make the light blink faster! anything else I can try?
    Answer by C0deKing, Sunday 17th of August 2008 12:36
1/ Is the drive seen in Windows?
2/ If yes what ID does it report.
3/ Try a checksum repair with the EEPROM Utility and report the result.
Answer by RCM, Sunday 17th of August 2008 20:20
    Drive IS seen in windows
Not sure if this is the ID or not, but it shows the drive normally as what it is,
Drive shows this information in discinfo
A checksum repair reports there is nothing wrong with the drives checksum.

I'm really hoping this can be fixed!
Answer by RCM, Sunday 17th of August 2008 21:21
Nevermind about the above! I went into DOS with NTFS4DOS and re flashed the firmware and it's working again! bigsmile

  • Lite On no longer reads disc's after un-installing burning software.
  • Question by ODPM-LTD.COM, Friday 8th of August 2008 18:27
recently i was desperately trying to find a piece of software that read ISRC codes, to cut a long story short, i installed loads of CD burning and Reading software, once i had attchieved what i set out to do, i un-installed all the new software i had just installed.

This seems to have changed some setting on my drive and it will no longer recognise any discs.

Strangely if i insert a disc and open a programme EG windows media player and i select the drive it will then play the disc, but as far as opening my computer and selecting the drive, it just says nothing it there.

I was told i need to update the firmware, heres the fun part, i downloaded the firmware for Liteon SHW-160PS but when trying to run the firmware an error comes up saying "NO MATCHED DRIVE DETECTED, THIS UTILITY IS ONLY FOR LITE-ON DVDRW SHW-160P6S DRIVE. DETECTED DRIVES: 2-0-0-0 E:LITE-ON DVDRW SHW-160P6S PRS2"

guess what the PRS2 firware isnt available from the LiteOn website, after contacting LiteOn they say Acer who make my PC have made ammendments to the firmware so they do not supply it for download, Acer say they need to take the PC in and have a look at it, but it is my mainwork PC and i cant release it to them as i need it 24/7.

    Dead End.

    Please help ?!?! anyone ???

PS: I have been avoiding this issue for ages so system restor doesnt go back as far to correct the issue :O(

Follow these directions to see if they solve anything for this aspect.

This is normal. Your drive has OEM firmware. LiteOn's flashers will not flash a drive with OEM firmware.

We will get you some updated firmware after we solve your initial issue.
    Answer by ODPM-LTD.COM, Friday 8th of August 2008 18:35
would updating the firmware not correct the issue?

tbh, i dont even really know what firmware does, i was just told to update it.
    Answer by ODPM-LTD.COM, Friday 8th of August 2008 18:48
sorry, forgot to mention i have already done as recomended from the Microsoft website, no developments after doing so.
Answer by Albert, Friday 8th of August 2008 18:59
Since restarting Windows Media Player will allow you to browse a disc, updating firmware probably won't fix your issue.

Have you tried uninstalling and reinstalling the device in Device Manager?

If you download ImgBurn, can it detect that there's a disc in the drive [empty or not]?
    Answer by ODPM-LTD.COM, Friday 8th of August 2008 19:06
this may sound a little stupid, ive found device manager, un-installed, now i cant work out how to re-install.

im quite hopefull this could work as i havent tried this before.

any beginners tips to re-install a drive would be appreciated
Answer by Albert, Friday 8th of August 2008 19:13
Restart the computer. The drive should be automatically detected.
    Answer by ODPM-LTD.COM, Friday 8th of August 2008 19:15
i have managed to re-instal the device now but still no change, if i open "My Computer" and mouse over the drive, it will say "3.5gb" for example if there is a DVD in there, if i double click the drive to open the disc, it just comes up with "Prepare a Blank Disc" Prompt with a field to enter the name of the blank disc, if i was buring one, but im not, its a pressed DVD-5 in the drive.
    Answer by ODPM-LTD.COM, Friday 8th of August 2008 19:26
ah ha !!! it appears i have success !!! at last.

i un-installed and re-installed, didnt sem to work, but i just re-started and all seems fine now, for the first time in MONTHS !!!

Thanks very much for your guidance Albert !! HUGELY appreciatede.
Answer by Albert, Friday 8th of August 2008 19:34
[You're] Welcome. Smilie Hope it remains fixed for you.

Would you still like to try a firmware update, or not tempt fate?
    Answer by ODPM-LTD.COM, Monday 11th of August 2008 01:15
i have to be honest and say i dont really know what the firmware does, is it the same sort of this as the drivers?
Answer by Albert, Monday 11th of August 2008 01:25
No need to worry about it.

Basically, the firmware is software in the drive itself that allows it to do all it does. Your computer sends a drive a command, and the drive's software figures out what to do and how to do it. It's specific to a given drive, usually. [Some drives have the same physical hardware, and can have different firmwares to enable/disable drive features].

If you're not having any issues, and your written discs come out with a pretty good quality, you can leave it as it is. You aren't required to update, unless you're just up for the challenge.
    Answer by ODPM-LTD.COM, Monday 11th of August 2008 01:28
ill be running some test on the drive over the next week so i think all will be ok, if i come across any more problems ill pick up this thread later this week, once again, many thanks, saved me getting an engineer in this week :O)

so your wanting it to be dvd (vob ) format or DVIX format???

either way you just need a converter like WINAVI .......convert it then burn it Smilie with like .....dvdshrink
    Answer by Kerry56, Tuesday 5th of August 2008 06:44
If you want to convert an avi file to dvd-video format, I suggest using DVDFlick or FAVC, or AVStoDVD. Any one can be easily found using Google. For converting flv to dvd, try DVDFlick, as it has support for that particular conversion.

I'm most familiar with FAVC of those three, and it will produce excellent quality dvd video using the HC encoder that is included.

Burn to disk with ImgBurn, a free burning program that I use for virtually all my cd and dvd burning tasks. Read the guides for burning dvd video at the ImgBurn forum.

The most recommended media around here is probably Verbatim brand...either -R or +R depending on your personal choice. If you have a particularly picky player, you might start with -R.

By the way S_S, DVDShrink doesn't have native burning ability...it uses Nero or DVDDecrypter or, if you have the special edition, it can use ImgBurn. Smilie
    Answer by t0nee1, Tuesday 5th of August 2008 06:59
You'd be pleased/happy to know that there are freeware alternatives for flv>avi....
XviD4PSP,WinFF, Avidemux,Super, just to name a few..hope it helps with "your quest for happyness"...Big Grin
Having said that that not all xvid/divx files are created equal. There are many factors such as file size, video bitrate, audio bitrate, audio format, video resolution, etc, and so on that affect xbox or standalone compatibility.
