• Burn is successful but won't play

As indicated, I recently purchased an MRX-530LE burner (external with a usb connection) and a spindle of Memorex+R (16X/4.7GB) discs to get started. Along with the drive I installed the Nero 7 software bundle that came with the burner. My machine is nothing fancy: Pentium R / 1.70GHz / 512MB RAM / 37GB HD (15GB free).

Now I realized I'd have successes and failures (and be making some coasters along the way) but I'm beginning to get frustrated with my lack of success and inability to figure this out myself.

Right off the bat I burned a full length movie without changing even a single setting (including burn speed). Since then I've quickly gone downhill. It seems that burning a clip or 2 works fine but anything beyond that fails. The strangest part is that I get confirmation messages at the end of the process indicating that the burn was successful. However, when I try to play it (on the computer or dvd player) it's as if the disc is blank. I've searched the forums and found helpful info but nothing that has fixed the situation. I even loaded everything on a second machine (Pentium R / 1.20 GHz / 0.99GB RAM / 28GB HD (20GB free) and I'm still having problems.

As lengthy as it is, I'm hoping someone can take a look at the log file and find something that I'm missing. . . . . ? Before I copy it in here, are there portions of the file that I can omit for the sake of space?

Ok, you're trying to burn full length movies. First off, are these movies on the hard drive or are you trying to go from one optical disk drive straight to your usb drive?

Second, if they are on the hard drive, do they play correctly from there? If you don't have dvd player software on this computer, I suggest getting VLC (free to download and use). Test them if you haven't already.

Next up is your choice of media. Memorex is not held in high esteem around here. They change suppliers too often, and seem to get a lot of mediocre grade disks. I suggest using Verbatim 16x. I'd try burning them at 8x or 12x speed at most.

Nero is not my favorite burning program, but is not scraping the bottom of the barrel either. It should be able to burn single layer dvds ok. If you want to try something else, I'd suggest ImgBurn. It is free and you can find guides to using it at their forums. http://forum.imgburn.com/index.php?showforum=4

Now, last on the list is some of your hardware. You are running Windows XP? 512mb ram is just about the least amount I'd want on an XP system. I don't know if it is holding you back or not, but it is something to consider. Someone else may come in and tell me I'm full of it on this point, but I thought I'd point it out.

To post your Nero log put [ code] and [ /code] around it but remove the spaces I've placed between the [ and c in both of those.

Thanks for the quick reply Kerry....

To be clear, It's not just full-length movies. I indicated that to set the stage since I was able to accomplish that right off the bat. In fact, most of what I'm doing is assembling video clips (kids ball games, family events, etc) and burning them to disc. I have VLC and am able to play them with absolutely no problems.

RE Media: I grabbed the Memorex 16X discs since they are the same make as the burner (thought that made sense - now I know better) and, quite frankly, I knew I'd be wasting some getting this stuff down. I'm definitely moving to Verbatim 16X.

RE software: I'm not liking Nero much either. I figured I'd give it a shot but the research I've done indicates that there may be better packages out there. I do have Imgburn but wasn't sure if the file types (wmv, avi, etc) I have are compatible or if conversions are required. Nero allows me to add the files and burn. Although that really doesn't matter much if I don't end up with a playable product in the end! I'll give that a shot if you think it may make a difference.

RE Hardware: I started with that machine (512MB RAM) since it's my desktop and it was easy to hook everything up. I moved to the 2nd machine (also running XP) since it has 1Gb of RAM which "seemed" to help but still coming up blank even when I drop the burn speed to 8X. Is it even worth trying 4X?

I'm most confused by the fact that I've had successes. That's why I wasn't sure if the log file would shed any light?

If you are converting avi, wmv and other types to dvd-video, ImgBurn won't do that. It is used to work with image files and burn to disk.

Depending on what all you are doing with these files, you will have to decide between two types of programs. Some allow editing, like Adobe Premiere Elements, or Corel Video Studio. Others will simply convert to dvd for you and let you play on stand alone players. There are even some good free ones in the latter category, like DVDFlick and FAVC.

Posting a Nero log file of one of your failed burns might help, yes, so if you have one go ahead and post it here.

I do like the editing capabilities Nero affords the user. Since I am utilizing a fair amount of clips it proves to be very helpful. I also have DVDFlick but I haven't had a chance to mess with it since I'm hoping to somehow make this setup work.

Some contradictory stuff in here....[21:56:49] NeroVision Sense Key: 0x05 (KEY_ILLEGAL_REQUEST). Two key illegal request errors, but after the disc was "finalized successfully". And Nero says the burn process was successful at 8x. Those error messages usually mean an incompatibility between burner and disks by the way.

First I'd try slowing down the burn speed a little more. 6x if you have that option, or down to 4x even, though I don't normally advise that slow a speed on 16x media.

Next, I'd try having Nero output as dvd files instead of burning automatically. Then try ImgBurn at 6x or 8x with these Memorex disks. The forum guides I linked earlier show how to burn dvd-video using Imgburn.

If neither of those work....get some Verbatim disks.

Thanks for the analysis Kerry. Just wanted to follow-up on this. . .

I followed your advice and used Nero to edit and then output as DVD files. I then took those files and used ImgBurn at 8X to burn to the same Memorex discs. . . .worked like a charm!

THanks again for the help. I'm sure I'll be back with something else
