  • Question by jvmartins, Friday 31st of October 2008 01:19
    hi to all

i have one problem, im a little noob at this so a little help from u would be great.

i got one computer from my cousin and the pioneer dvr-215d was already installed on the system so no problem at this time

At one time i was obligated to format my harddrive and install all the hardware again on the windows xp pro sp2 and got all hardware installed except the dvr-215d, when i start the computer the burner appears on the list of sata drivers in the bios but when i come to windows and go to device manager i see this situation( the windows is on portuguese but its raid controller) http://img261.imageshack.us/my.php?image=teste1yv7.jpg

already try to update the firmware to 1.18 but when i click to upgrade this message appear "available target is not found"

all the connections of cables are ok cause in the previous installation of windows the burner was ok ,and now on the initiation to windows the burner appear in the list of sata drivers so i think that i got to do something to install that "raid controller"

    thanks in advance
Answer by lakedude, Friday 31st of October 2008 01:33
I'm going to take a wild stab in the dark and suggest that you need to get into your bios and change the SATA/RAID settings.

Are you running a RAID? If not you might need to disable RAID from your bios.

Disable raid and update the nvidia sata drivers.

  • Difference between Pioneer 215d and 216bk
  • Question by Wii, Wednesday 22nd of October 2008 21:29
    Hi all

I'm new to the forum, I did some browsing through the forum with buying a new DVD burner in mind and decided to go for a Pioneer 215d. I went ahead and ordered one and received a 216bk instead. My question is, is there a significant difference between the two drives, if so, in favor of which drive? And if the 215d is the better of the two drives, is the difference enough to warrant sending the drive back for an exchange or refund to source one from somewhere else.

    Thanks in advance

Welcome Wii- The 215 is almost impossible to find now even if you tried to exchange I doubt they have one.
Answer by Wii, Wednesday 22nd of October 2008 21:42
    Hi James

Thanks for the welcome and quick reply, I bought the drive off an ebay trader and have e-mailed them explaining the mistake and they are in the process of checking their stock as they thought their stock was of 215d's. Is the 216 identically hardware wise and would a cross flash to 215 firmware be possible/advisable?

    Thanks
Answer by bjkg, Thursday 23rd of October 2008 01:48
    @ Wii,

Do NOT attempt to flash a Pioneer DVR-216D drive with Pioneer DVR-215D drive Firmware – you will end up with an expensive non-functional Drive.

There isn’t anything ‘Wrong” with a Pioneer DVR-216D drive that would warrant an attempting to flash a Pioneer DVR-216D Firmware with Pioneer DVR-215D Firmware.

Before believing that you should be dissatisfied with your newly acquired Pioneer DVR-216D perhaps you should closely review Pioneer DVR-216D related postings in the dedicated Pioneer DVD Burner Forum to become fully aware of the performance of a Pioneer DVR-216D drive.

  • Newbie question about pionner 215D
  • Question by Anikachiktou, Thursday 16th of October 2008 16:40
    Hi everyone,

THis is my first thread in this forum, and english is not my first language.

I have a pioneer 215D with the latest (original 1.18) firmware installed.

After many hour to try to understand what I have to do to unlock it like my old DVR-108. The diffrence now, I don't have a software with one click to hack the firmware.

    Correct me if I'm wrong.

The thing I understand, is I have to run Media Code Speed, load original firmware 1.18, check increase read speed (if I want), RPC1 patch and anable bitsetting.

Here's my confusion. Increase read speed, it's clear, but RPC1 patch and bitsetting... What is the change with that box checked?

Crossflash from 215D to 215 unlock it? Or only add more options?

    thanks for your repply!
    Answer by troy512, Thursday 16th of October 2008 17:09
    RPC1 will remove region code

enable bitsetting will booktype +r media to dvd-rom

    non-D models support dvd-ram
Answer by Anikachiktou, Thursday 16th of October 2008 19:05
bitsetting will booktype +r media? What do you mean by that?
Answer by beef barley, Thursday 16th of October 2008 20:56
Bitset/Booktype Dvd+R media to Dvd-Rom, which is the same as a commercial Dvd. The drive as it is right now with stock firmware will not do this, but if you check that box it will do it automatically.
Answer by motorcycle, Friday 17th of October 2008 08:20
Some older standalone dvd-players are not able to play +R media.
If the booktype is set to dvd-rom (automatically in this case), the burned dvd will be compatible with older standalone dvd-players as well, that's what it's all about.

  • Pioneer DVR-215 visto come "SCSI Cdrom Device"
  • Question by jardel, Friday 5th of September 2008 20:50
    http://img329.imageshack.us/my.php?image=dvr215oy0.jpg

    http://img355.imageshack.us/my.php?i...9081542so6.jpg

Answer by jardel, Friday 5th of September 2008 23:56
    ops http://img355.imageshack.us/my.php?image=p0509081542so6.jpg

    Answer by geno888, Saturday 6th of September 2008 00:28

Infatti, i drive connessi a quel connettore li vede tutti come drive esterni.

Answer by jardel, Saturday 6th of September 2008 02:55

    Answer by geno888, Saturday 6th of September 2008 16:29

Answer by jardel, Tuesday 9th of September 2008 21:24

    sai a cosa servono esattamente?
    Answer by geno888, Wednesday 10th of September 2008 16:23

Answer by jardel, Wednesday 10th of September 2008 18:23

  • Pioneer Dvr 215BK: burning problems
  • Question by Hodus, Wednesday 3rd of September 2008 10:50
I bought this burner 2 days ago and still couldnt make it work correctly. I didnt get any problem reading already burn dvds and cds but i cant make it burn a single dvd always crash. Giving u more info about my pc will help i think.

My MB is a GA-MA790FX-DQ6 with 4 SATA HDs and the burner attached to 1 of the 2 Gigabyte SATA slots that provides the MB also. Dont have any kind of RAID setup, already checked BIOS for it, all about RAID is disabled. I also updated my MB with the lastest firmware.
Also i had Daemon tools and uninstalled it as i read it searching in google. Ive downloaded the latest SATA controllers from Gigabyte Website but always get the same error when i try to burn with nero a single compilation, i get a "SCSI problem" message. Each time this happen, the DVD goes to trash but when nero is trying to burn it never pass from 1%, so imo just burn the TOC and then crash.
Any idea that can fix my problem? thx in advance Smilie
Answer by _chef_, Wednesday 3rd of September 2008 11:59
Try connecting it to another SATA port.

  • DVR-215D (1.18): problem burning Dual Layer Arita DVDs
  • Question by jeffvdb, Tuesday 26th of August 2008 14:56
Hello all, I've came across cdfreaks some times and decided to register after I got some problems with the burner. It might just be a simple problem/solution... Anyway I try to give a good view, so this post might be a bit long haha bigsmile

The drive was working all fine untill I needed to burn my first dual layer dvd, I've decided to go for the pink arita DL+'s, but somehow I screwed up bout 3 or 4 of them. The problem always accured around half of the burning process (think its around end of layer one). Burned with imgburn btw, havent got any logs from it.

I thought it might be a problem with the motherboard, so I grapped my old motherboard (lucky it featured sata) + cpu and connected the harddisc and burner to it. Guess what: I got a good burn after that bowdown
    (coincidence or not?)

ok, few weeks later (switched back to current motherboard and cpu, since its a dualcore): today I wanted to do a backup on a dual layer and it gave me an error around end of layer one. (me saying: not again!) The nero (version 8) log tells me 'Internal target failure' and 'Could not perform end of Disc-at-once'.

In my frustration I decided to look around a bit on the internet and found out that I could do a drive test with nero discspeed. I got it to burn one of my normal dvd5 Arita (blue one's, id Ritek R05). So now I wanted to see what the quality of the burn is, but I got an error telling me: Drive does not support this function.

To sum up: normal dvd's burn fine, but it is having problems with dual layers (arita in this case, might get verbatim later but I dont need DL's that much so it might be in a very long time (actually it was my first after a long time)). I tried another motherboard and it burned fine with the same burner (coincidence?).

Please help, im beginning to suspect the dvd drive is broken (internal target failure and not starting quality scan). Or im suspecting that the motherboard is not good (enough). I bougt it few months ago (before the burner) as a cheap deal; motherboard + dualcore amd cpu for 99 euro.
So there's still warrenty on the motherboard and on the burner too.
Other thing it might be is the software side (using vista sp1). Maybe drivers or something? I really dont know lol. It might also be the media, but that still doesnt explain the fact that it burns fine untill half way and it completed fully on the other setup.

    Thanks,
    Jeff

ps, im from the netherlands so there could be some errors in my text lol Stick Out Tongue
pps, this post turned out longer then expected!
Answer by bjkg, Tuesday 26th of August 2008 15:39
    @ jeffvdb,

    Welcome to the Forum.

The results your experiencing with your Arita DL+ Media is a typical classic problem when attempting to use poor quality problematic Media.

For quality error free DL Burning results Verbatim DL MKM001 / MKM003 Mitsubishi Kagaku Media is the only DL Media that consistently produces quality error free results. All other DL Media is considered suspect and should be avoided (not used).

Concerning Disc Quality Scanning – There is not any thing wrong with your Pioneer DVR-215D Drive. Plainly put the Pioneer DVR-215D Drive does NOT support Disc Quality Scanning. This is not a usual situation because many Manufacture Brands of DVD Burners do not support Disk Quality Scanning.

Concerning your dvd5 Arita (blue one's, id Ritek R05) Media – Ritek Media has a rich well-documented history of reflectivity degradation problems. Your dvd5 Arita (blue one's, id Ritek R05) Media might appear to Burn correctly but sometime down the line your dvd5 Arita (blue one's, id Ritek R05) Media will devolve reflectivity degradation problems and become unreadable which is referred to as “DVD Rot”. To obtain consistent quality error free results only use well-documented known proven quality error free Media such as Taiyo Yuden or Verbatim Media.

  • DVR-215 to DVR-S15J Questions?
  • Question by MOD.IT, Monday 25th of August 2008 20:27
    I'm getting a "DVr 215D"

Will it cross to DVr-S15J or does it have to be crossed to 215 first?

When I eventually have a DVr215D @ DVR-S15J will it be supported by MediaCodeSpeedEdit for speed hack rpc1 bitseting ect?

Does the DVr-S15J support quality scanning software?

Thanks for any hlep on the subject.

    @ MOD.IT,

Suggest reviewing the CD Freaks Pioneer DVD Burner Forum threads “How To: Crossflash 215D to 215” (http://club.cdfreaks.com/f87/how-crossflash-215d-215-a-241069), “How To: Crossflash 215D to 215” (http://club.cdfreaks.com/f87/crossflash-215d-215l-246829), and “MediaCodeSpeedEdit support for Pioneer DVD-Writers” (http://club.cdfreaks.com/f87/mediacodespeededit-support-pioneer-dvd-writers-153213).

Thanks for your reply and the links Smilie which I have to add have already been visited by me.

    The flash path is 215D > 215 > S15J Wink

    MediaCodeSpeedEdit support for Pioneer DVD-Writers

The Mediacodespeededit is still a bit misty I'll know if the S15J is supported when I get crossed to that point for sure but I would like to know before I start the process.

Key features of the Pioneer support:
1/ Support for PIONEER DVD-RW DVR-109/110x/111x/112x/115x/212x/215x/K05/K15/K17 DVD writer.

The S15J is not mentioned in the supported list Frown so has someone personal knowledge of the question i'm asking Smilie

Thanks for any help on the subject.
Answer by Albert, Monday 25th of August 2008 21:30
The S/A drives are more or less just fancy names for the 2/1 drives [in this case], respectively, and are included in the list of drives as 115/215 drives. They [the A15/S15 firmwares] do work in MCSE, to the best of my knowledge. Agree

  • Question by Wu-TanG, Wednesday 6th of August 2008 20:21
    Hello guys,

I am new on this forum, and have seen u guys helping others real good, so wanna try my question here. My Pioneer 215DBK SATA can burn CD/DVD's but can't read CD/DVD's. If i enter a CD/DVD with something on it, it shows how many MB/GB it is, but as a empty disc. So i thought the burner is defect or something so i bought a new 1 but nothing changed. I checked the SATA cable's, SATA ports, BIOS downgrade/update and I even formatted my PC, but nothing. The odd thing is, when i remove the burner from the hardware list and search for new hardware/installing the drive. After that the drives can read CD/DVD's, but no Autoplay and it makes weard noises like my other drive. I know there is no problem with the Drives. When i received my PC everything was ok.
Can someone realy help me out, i am out of ideas :'(.
Btw. When i start my computer up, i have to w8 like 15 seconds at the Checking NVRAM screen, maybe this has something to do with that?

  • Device not available
  • Question by Freeco, Tuesday 15th of July 2008 19:16
Since a couple of weeks, after months of using Win Vista ultimate x64, I'm experiencing unexplainable problems (for me) while burning DVDs under Nero angry

I first thought the problem was due to my previous OptiArc AD-7173S, because when I ran some tests with a Plextor PX-810SA from work I didn't notice any problems.
The OptiArc just hung while burning at random moments and after 10-15 minutes Nero gave a timeout.
I explained my case and tests to the shop where I got the OptiArc and they agreed to trade it with Pioneer DVR-215D (that Plextor is a rebranded Pioneer, but only cheaper Wink).

At first I had no problems with the Pioneer, but the 5th or 6th burn also crashed. Now another error message: "Device not available".
Apparently the drive 'crashes', also at random moments, and is unmounted from Vista. I need to restart the PC to make it available again.
I replaced the SATA cable in the meantime (you never know), but no solution.

While burning I'm not stressing my PC. Mostly I'm only browsing some webpages, but certainly nothing disc intensive.
I always burn at 8x, and I've tried 2 different disc brands: my previous spindle was from Memorex 16x, the current is Verbatim 16x.

I hope somebody can make some sense to this... I'm out of idea's Confused

    extra info:
In the meantime I also tried CDBurnerXP: it doesn't recognize the drive... I had the same issue with the OptiArc drive before, however both are on the supported drive list.
After I first had the problems with the OptiArc I've reinstalled Vista from scratch.

What is the SATA controller used?
Answer by Freeco, Wednesday 16th of July 2008 14:16
the onboard from the Intel chipset (ICH8?) on my Asus P5B-E motherboard. Sata is set to AHCI in the BIOS.
It worked for months like this...
I can't try to set it to IDE, 'cause Windows no longer boots if you change it. A reinstall is needed.

    allright, more info then...

This morning I burnt 3 DVD's with all relative small JPG's, no problem at all.

After that I burnt a DVD with 3 large AVI's (1.4GB each): my computer hung when the burn was around 85% finished. A soft reset was required.

I retried the same burn. In the meantime I was installing TomTom 7 on my PDA. A restart of the device was needed. While doing that Nero gave an error "reset occured" followed by "drive not ready".

What has a PDA hooked up via USB to do with a writer connected to an internal SATA port??

    ====== *** Nero Burning ROM, History File *** ======[/CODE]
Answer by Freeco, Friday 29th of August 2008 20:19
alright, this is really getting on my nerves angry

In the meantime I've avoided Nero as much as possible. I tried some other burn software, but there's nothing out there I really fancy.
    * CdburnerXP => drive not detected. I read their forum and I think the software has problems detecting via SATA AHCI
    * InfraRecorder => same thing
    * ImgBurn => not 1 coaster! (or max 1, not 100% sure), but it's mainly designed for writing and creating images. For burning individual files/folders it's not that complete as Nero.

So I just tried Nero again as I wanted to make my monthly backup of software/images/data/settings to DVD and... you guess it... another coaster pukey

The only thing I can image why ImgBurn is so solid is that perhaps it uses some other interface to communicate with my burner?
In the settings I found there is a choice between 5 interfaces, but I kept the default: SPTI - Microsoft.

Is there some way of telling what interface Nero uses, and in case it's different, can I change it to use SPTI?

  • Pioneer DVR-215D firmware v1.19 - how to extract firmware?
  • Question by Vaako, Saturday 12th of July 2008 22:46
    Hello,

Can someone tell me how to extract the firmware from the device instead of putting one in?

With DVRFlash I see no option to extract, only for putting an firmware into the device.

I have firmware version v1.19 and I'll like to backup this just in case becourse my DVR-215D is working GREAT!!!

I find it strange since on Pioneer's website they have firmware version 1.18 available and not 1.19

My device is assembled on Februari 2008.

    All information is welcome!!!

    Thanks in advance.

Here some info of the device in a DOS window, can someone tell me what they mean by "Drive is in normal mode" ???
Answer by Llun, Sunday 13th of July 2008 01:43
There is no extraction program to use with Pio drives... Really SadReally SadReally Sad I had mine crossed to a 215L but with 1.18... Version 1.19 is not out yet... Really SadReally SadReally Sad
Answer by Vaako, Sunday 13th of July 2008 03:07
Why would you crossflash it to an 215L ?
Would the drive get better if it was a 215L, wil it read better or wil it be faster etc...

Please let us now what changes we could expect when we crossflash this drive.

    Thanks,
    Vaako
Answer by Bob, Sunday 13th of July 2008 03:36
"L" gives you RAM read and write...........most of us are still waiting for 1.19 f/w's. Keep your 1.19 unless you need "L" f/w for now if i was you.

That's the mode the drive usually is in during normal operation. The other mode would be some kind of "kernel mode" or whatever you like to call it, that is used for flashing the drive's firmware.
Answer by _chef_, Sunday 13th of July 2008 21:42
Yup, the "not normal mode" is Failsafe mode.

Before buy a new dvd burner, I 'd like to know if it has the ability to run PI/PIF test from Nero's cd/dvd speed utility tool. Two of the particular burners I'm looking at are the Samsung SH-203B and the Pioneer 215D. Confused Embarrassment I'm having a very difficult time trying to find this info. under the specs. and or via Googling........so I did what I felt was best and joined CDFreaks. Bob, Beef (or anyone else for that matter) I started this topic with you guys hope you can help or point me in the correct direction. EEK!

The Samsung drive can perform such tests if you make a small registry change. There's some disagreement on how trustworthy this drive is as a scanner.

The Pioneer DVR-215D cannot produce (useful) scans and neither can previous Pioneer drives. It's a very good CD/DVD burner, however.

These burners I've mentioned run in the 25-35 dollar range (limited), Can you suggest any other burners (price range isn't locked here)?
Thakes for such a quick and helpful response DrageMester :O)

LiteOn DVD burners can scan for PIE/PIF with no registry change.
I rarely get my LiteOn burners to burn media with quite as good quality as the best of my other drives, but your mileage may vary.

Hence I use my Liteys more for scanning and other drives, currently mostly my Pioneer 112 and 111 for burning.

If you want to scan CD media, you'll need another drive, because LiteOn DVD drives (and presumably Samsung drives using MediaTek chipset) don't report C1 errors in a normal fashion.

In my opinion, a recent LiteOn is the only way to go for compareable DVD scanning.
Samsungs are way to variable, some are accurate, some are useless as a scanner.

While the LiteOn 20x burners are not bad, I would recommend a Pioneer DVR-115/215 + LiteOn DH-20A4P combo.

So DragMester would you agree w/ Womi's suggestion on the combo? By the way, thanks for your input too Womi

Yes I agree. No drive does everything best and the mentioned combination covers the most important stuff (except reliable CD scanning).

  • Pioneer 215d sata pci card help
  • Question by chong sparks, Sunday 29th of June 2008 17:39
    Hello all,

I have a bit of a problem. I have 2 pioneer 215d burners and and a via sata card with 2 internal ports and 1 external.

The sata card will only allow me to connect 1 of the burners to it, if i connect them both it will only detect 1 of them as a burner and the pc is kind off crashed and doesnt work properly. both burners work ok as i have used them on there own but i cant get them to work together on the same card.

does anyone know why this is and what i need to do to get them both to work ?

    Thanks

    Hello to you,
Via chipset based cards tend to be a bit inconsistent with DVD writers.
I suggest you get a Silicon Image based PCI SATA controller card.
    These are more flexible.
Will allow the BIOS to be flashed, as well as having specific drivers for CDRW/DVDRW's.

via chipsets don't work period with sata dvd burners. as soulsurvivor said you'll need to get a pci sata controller card with the silicon image chipset. Chipset 3112, 3114 & 3512 will work fine.
