Plextor does'nt make drives anymore. The drives with Plextors name on it today are usually LG, Pioneer is a nice drive and can be firmware bit set to DVDROM on the +R media. There is many brands besides Pioneer that can be bit set today. LG, LiteOn, Pioneer, NEC, etc. Im into Pioneer drives but i have all the other brands also so its up to you what u want. You just have to make sure the model your interested in can Bit Set. But forget the new Plextors all together because there not plextors. The only thing Plextor on the new drives is there name.

    Thanks

    Which pioneer would you recommend?
Answer by jubjubbird, Saturday 8th of November 2008 21:33
Pioneer 115/215 is a great burner with mature firmware, but it is no longer in production, but you may pick one up somewhere.

The newer 116/216 has only had 1 released firmware, and while generally good, there are a few minor issues that firmware will hopefully sort out in the future.

Word of warning though, flashing the Pioneer drives with the modified bitsetting firmware will invalidate your warranty, as it is not officially supported.

  • New!DVD burner won't burn
  • Question by raiden1701, Saturday 8th of November 2008 18:12
I have Nero 8 and 2 optical drives. A Plextor PX-716A DVD burner and a LG GCE-8520B CD burner. I've had seemingly the same setup for years now (Nero 8 for 6 months). Now I can't burn any DVD's on my DVD drive (I can burn CD-R's). But I can burn whatever the the CD burner with Nero. When I try to burn a DVD with any kind of data, I get a "power calibration error" and then a "Session fixation error". The media I use has been Memorex 16x DVD's and 52x CD's (same kind for years). Here is the log:

I don't think Gold has Merge mode?
Answer by bassmanjerry, Saturday 11th of October 2008 14:30
Thanks for replying. Gold has Full disc, main movie, split disc, and copy. Which do I use?
    Answer by jeff53404, Saturday 11th of October 2008 15:22
The screenshot supports Bob's response and shows that Platinum supports Merge not Gold.

I'm not a DVDFab user but wonder if you can download Platinum as a trial to make your backup. More knowledgeable users of DVDFb may be able to respond or make other suggestions.
Answer by bassmanjerry, Saturday 11th of October 2008 15:59
    I'll try it. Thanks
Answer by signals, Saturday 11th of October 2008 17:06
Merge mode is perfect for this, but it will not have menus. Frown If the discs have extra titles that you want, you can include them and make them play after the main movie. If you have a license for Gold, then I'm not sure if the new installer will allow a trial run of Platinum, but I have no way to test this. Give it a try, post in the DVDFab subforum if you have problems.
    Answer by troy512, Saturday 11th of October 2008 17:14
if you have had dvdfab for less than 30 days you can still trial platinum. uninstall and after reinstall do not enter your registration.
Answer by bassmanjerry, Saturday 11th of October 2008 22:17
I've had dvdfab gold for a long time and love it. Easiest to use of all. If i have to pay to upgrade, so be it. Thanks to all.

  • Plextor Help
  • Question by Coach60, Thursday 9th of October 2008 04:52
    Hi,
I have a Plextor PX-716A burner. I have had it for 4-5 years and this is the first year that I have burned dvd’s with it. I use Nero 7 as well. I coach hs football and I have been burning game film, trade film and video from a camcorder from when we send someone to scout. Weeks 1 and 2 the dvd’s were very good. Clear and burned with no problems. Week 3 I had 1 dvd that came out funny. When there was no action, kids standing still, the quality was ok; when the action started things became blurry. The kids went out of focus. I did the video from scratch a second time and it turned out ok. Week 4 every dvd I made turned out bad. Non-action looked fuzzy, action looked blurred. Week 5 was the same as week 4, all were bad, and I was even getting errors, unable to burn dvd. I thought it might be a software issue, so I uninstalled Nero and reinstalled it, still same result. Finally I installed Nero on my wife’s dell and burned the dvd’s and the turned out fine. I am assuming that this burner is now a paper weight, or is there something that can be done with it. If not, what would be a good replacement? I loved my plextor because whatever I burned, it would play in any cd/dvd player that I tried it in. So I guess that would have to be my number 1 requirement in a burner. Good quality burn and speed would be next.
Thanks for taking the time to read this.
    James
    Answer by eric93se, Thursday 9th of October 2008 17:38
The hardware in the plex 716 was a little flaky, I'm not say yours is poor quality, it most likely needs its lens cleaned. You can disassemble the drive and clean the lens with a q-tip and isopropyl alcohol. If that doesn't do the trick, then a new drive is only like $30.
    Answer by Coach60, Saturday 11th of October 2008 22:30
The alcohol seemd to do the trick for now. The drive is making nice copys of a trade dvd. Thanks Eric. Still think I might buy a new one. I would like something w/lightscribe, plays in any dvd player and produces good quality picture. I have seen the optiarc, and the samsung's reccomended here, most likely will buy it from newegg.

    Thanks again.
    Answer by eric93se, Monday 13th of October 2008 02:04
Well get a SATA drive if you MB supports it:
SAMSUNG 22X DVD±R DVD Burner with LightScribe Black SATA Model SH-S223Q, doesn't come with a sata cable, but they are cheap.

LITE-ON 20X DVD±R DVD Burner with LightScribe Black E-IDE/ATAPI Model DH-20A4H-08 - Retail, IDE drive.

Both should be capable of turning on Bitsetting with one of the firmware modifying tools, like Ala42's MCSE tool, or one of codekings tools.

  • Windows Vista & PxScan
  • Question by terminalvelocd, Thursday 25th of September 2008 12:04
    G'day all,

It seems that Windows Vista loves to interfere with PxScan. Whilst in the middle of parity scanning, if you open "My Computer", Windows will read the volume label of every drive, causing falsely high error readings on PxScan. Does anyone know how to make Vista read discs only when YOU want it to?

    Regards,

  • PX-716A & PX-W12432Te won't write Dual Layer Discs
  • Question by jdw715, Wednesday 27th of August 2008 01:16
I have a Plextor PX-716A that won't write to Double Sided discs. I have updated to the current firmware. Any recommendations? It works on all other media.

Also, I have an external Plextor PX-W12432Te that is not functional except powering on and ejecting. Is there any way to trouble shoot this drive? It is no longer recognized in Windows. Can dust build-up case be the cause of this or the above problem? There is a lot of dust in my neighborhood.

As a last resort, can I put another internal PX-W12432Ti in the external case?
Answer by hwp, Wednesday 27th of August 2008 10:43
    Welcome to CDF!

As for the DL writing: Please provide more information. Is there an error message, an error log or similar?

As for the PX-W12432: You could try to give the drive a complete overhaul. Clean all connectors and the lens. See this thread for example: http://club.cdfreaks.com/f43/712a-died-232572/

Yes, an external enclosure should be possible. We have a specific sub-forum for questions concernign that matter: http://club.cdfreaks.com/f143/

  • Plextor PX-716A: Suddenly Ripping Slowly
  • Question by Robdog007, Thursday 21st of August 2008 21:04
I'm in the process of backing up some of my DVDs and suddenly the ripping process (which was taking 6-10 mins or so) is taking over an hour. The drive read speed is going up and down, from 0x all the way to about 20x. When it hits 0x, it stays there for about 2 minutes before it speeds up again.

Nothing has changed, no new programs installed etc. I have double checked that the drive is in DMA. I'm at a bit of a loss! Doh
Answer by TM, Thursday 21st of August 2008 21:13
Sounds for me the disk could be scratched and the drive error correction tries toread the disk.
It may be also possible that the laser lens is dirty and need to be cleaned. If you have this problemwith all DVDs you tried it sounds like a dirty laser lens. Your 716 is old for this reason it could be the problem...
    Answer by geno888, Thursday 21st of August 2008 21:14
    Welcome to the forum Smilie

The ripping speed is also influenced by the disc status. A heavily scratched or dirty disc is ripped with more difficulty than a clean or a brand new one.

Are you sure that the drive is really in DMA? some people confuse the chosen option (DMA if available) with the current transfer mode (see the picture) Flower
    Answer by Robdog007, Friday 22nd of August 2008 00:36
    Thanks for the replies!

The dirty lens though had occurred to me, but I dismissed it because the problem was so drastic and so sudden. I think I will disassemble the drive later and clean it anyhow, just in case.

As for the DMA option, no, I am not certain it actually IS in DMA. The "Transfer Mode" box says "DMA if available", but the current mode indicated "Unavailable" or something to that effect.

I'm at work, so I can't check atm. When I have more info I'll post again.

Be sure to check all Primary & Secondary IDE channels, and then be sure to check both device 0 and device 1 under each channel.
    Answer by Robdog007, Friday 22nd of August 2008 01:07
By "check" do you mean make sure the combo box has "DMA if available" selected?
Answer by Albert, Friday 22nd of August 2008 01:13
I meant ensure that you haven't accidentally overlooked the Plextor; "Not Applicable" is for when a device isn't connected in that Device 0/Device 1 position.

For each channel, there will be a Device 0, and a Device 1. Your Plextor, depending on how it's connected, could be as any of these. Process of elimination will show you where your drive is/is not connected. If you happen to find anything where something is currently in PIO mode, with "DMA if available" selected, then uninstall that channel and restart your computer so everything is redetected.
    Answer by Robdog007, Friday 22nd of August 2008 01:50
I already did something similar. Under the device manager, I found the nvidia IDE controller and uninstalled it, rebooted, and let windows install it's own drivers.

  • CD-RW not accepted
  • Question by xlogin2, Sunday 20th of July 2008 01:12
My PX-716A suddenly stopped to recognize CD-RW's.
The disks I wrote before now are not recognized by the drier.
I tried all of them (I have Memorex 4X and Verbatim 16X-24X, Memorx 8X-10X and others) none of them work now.

I know for sure they are good: I can read them on a different drive
Now when I insert any CD-RW the driver make a few attempts to read it and then shows no disk

I cannot say at which moment it happend. May be after I upgrade to the latest firmware 1.11?

All others medias works as usually: CD-R, DVD-R, DVD-RW

    Has someone have such problem?

    Many thanks!

    Alex
Answer by hwp, Sunday 20th of July 2008 09:05
A partial failure of the drive can be related to a dirty lens. Drives that are older than 2 years usually have accumulated quite a bit of dust and dirt inside. Look here for a possible remedy:

    Answer by xlogin2, Sunday 20th of July 2008 17:46
    Thanks for the reply!

But before doing the deep surgery let me notice that the drive is happy with all other media types. I've never received errors with CD-R or DVD's all types. But in the post you refer to says about total failure of the disk:

"no longer recognizes any disc I put in"

Are the CD-RW significantly different in optical sence?

    Thanks again!

  • Autostrategy: cannot create strategy
  • Question by xlogin2, Sunday 20th of July 2008 00:45
    Hello!

In "AUTOSTRATEGY Database" dialog "Create strategy" button is disabled no matter what other options I use in the diolog. So I cannot test/create a new strategy.

Why is this and how to create it? Did I forget something.

I use PlexTools Professional XL V3.11, PX-716a, firmware version 1.11,
    Windows XP Pro, ASUS P5K-E

    Thanks in advance!

    Alex
Answer by hwp, Sunday 20th of July 2008 09:07
That is normal behaviour for a PX-716. The 716 model only allows the use of Autostrategy with media unknown to the drive. As long as the media is known to the drive (there is a writing strategy in the firmware) AS cannot be used.

On later models (755/760) AS can also be used on known media.
    Answer by xlogin2, Sunday 20th of July 2008 17:32
    Thanks for reply!

Do you want to say there is no way to improve results with "known media" ?

I generaly satisfied with default behaviour of the my PX-716, but recently tried DVD-R 16X bought at Costco and results just unacceptable:
at certificied speed peaks of PI errors in the middle of the disk up to 900!
    (see attachment)

Is this what the default strategy supposed to to?

Or this is not recommended media?

That is a bad result. I have little experience with Ritek F1 media.

What speed did you write with? From the error graph it looks like you selected 16x and the drive slowed by itself shortly after reaching the 2GB mark.
    Answer by xlogin2, Tuesday 22nd of July 2008 05:33
I selected MAX (auto) in imgburn. The real maximum was less, about 12, I think.
If the default result is so bad (supposedly it is done accordingly to the Plextor strategy stored in the firmware) and it is less than certified speed anyway, why we need this at all? It just does not work.

Or make possible to teach the drive by using autostrategy. But accordingly to you this is not possible, because the entry already exists. Where is the logic?

    I do not understand something

My logic would be to find some better media Smilie Like Taiyo Yuden or Mitsubishi Chemical/Verbatim.

I agree with Two Degrees; Ritek media is not for everyone. Disagree

Neither AS, the built in strategy nor Powerrec are almihgty and can guarantee a perfect burn every time, especially on media that are of less than optimal quality.

The problem is that the quality of some media is subject to great variations. So the media in some spindle may be able to burn at 12x, some even at 16x and a third at only 8x. Sometimes there is even such a variance within a single spindle of media! That is why Plextor offers quality checking functionality and also offers all speed possibilities. It offers you the possibility to use even such mediocre quality media.

In your case it's probably best to try again with 8x or even 6x and see if you can get acceptable results. If not i'd recommend you try finding better media.

  • Firmware issues
  • Question by Adamkingkong, Thursday 17th of July 2008 03:18
I just bought a used PX-716A. Everything seems to work fine. I even checked everything with PlexTools Professional XL. I did all of the read and write tests. But the odd thing is that it shows the firmware version to be 1.59 released/installed 12/15/05. But when I checked on the Plextor website. It says the latest is 1.11.Posted April 9, 2007.  Could I have some hacked version of firmware or something else?
