  • Installed new PX-760a now system won't boot
  • Question by mothman, Sunday 12th of October 2008 04:43
    Hello,

Just bought a new old stock PX-760a. Prior to installing the 760a my compy was/is working fine, no problems with Samsung s-202j drive.
I installed the 760a and the system won't boot. The board, an Asus P5Q Deluxe, post OK, fans are on but just blank screen.
If i return to the Samsung, no problem system boots right up.
Any idea what may be causing this?
Answer by Bob, Sunday 12th of October 2008 05:11
Do you have the jumpers set correctly?
Answer by mothman, Sunday 12th of October 2008 05:21
Yes i should have mentioned that. It's set to master, i only use one drive. Also as I said when i switch back to the Samsung, no problem. I did take the 760a up to a local shop and it woked fine there. I'm not a computer pro but it must be something with the Asus P5Q's IDE controller, or a Bios setting that's beyond my knowledge.
Answer by Bob, Sunday 12th of October 2008 05:28
Well that was the next thing for me to say was put it in another pc.

Someone will post that knows that mobo as i'm not familiar with it.
    Answer by edge130, Friday 17th of October 2008 06:35
I also have a PX-760A that was working fine in my existing system.

I just upgraded to an ASUS P5Q-Deluxe and connected the 760A into the sole IDE connector.

I powered up the motherboard, got the short OK beep, but no POST screen, just a blank monitor! Repeated booting yielded the same results.

Once I Disconnected the IDE cable from the motherboard, it would beep OK again and continue to POST OK!

Luckily I had another dvd burner, LiteOn SATA version and was able to use that to instal Win XP.

I even updated to the lastest BIOS, but had the same results.

Called ASUS, Tech thought it was a bad Marvel chip that controls the IDE port.

    THis gets even stranger!

Express Gate was ENABLED in the BIOS when this occurred.

I disabled the Express Gate in BIOS, restarted and then shut off.

I reconnected the PX-760A and powered up, the system POSTED OK!!
Wondows also recognized the drive OK!

BUT, when I tried to shut Windows down, Windows shut down but the motherboard was still running!! (CPU fan, Video card fan)

Called ASUS again. Another Tech asked to try another IDE device.

I connected just an old, spare IDE hard drive and system booted Ok.

Enabled/Disabled Express Gate with the IDE hard drive and experienced no problems. Windows shuts down OK and MB shuts down OK.

Because the IDE hard drive worked OK, the Tech stated that the IDE controller (Marvel chip) was working OK.

Tech suggested I try to connect another brand IDE burner and test it.

Do't have one, but will try to borrow one to check it out.

FOR SOME STRANGE REASON, DOES'T LIKE THE PLEXTOR DRIVE!!
Answer by mciahel, Friday 17th of October 2008 09:37
    Hi and Welcome!

most "IDE" controllers that are slapped on Intel chipset motherboards, don't support optical drives properly.
So this is not a problem of your drive, but a general problem of modern motherboards with Intel chipset.

  • can't read audio CD-R, but read pressed CD
  • Question by alexey, Sunday 28th of September 2008 01:44
Suddenly my Plextor PX-760A firmaware 1.7 [latest] stopped recognizing any audio CD-R burned by me (including the ones burned on itself a year earlier). This includes very good brands - TDK, Sony, Verbatim.

At the same time it does not have any problems reading data CD's burned on the same brands, from the same spindle.

It reads also the commercially pressed audio CD.

Windows [XP] does not see an audio CD-R disc inserted.
Various software (Feurio, EAC, Foobar, CD DVD diagnostic) report the disc as blank - whether in ASPI [which is correctly installed] BOB's ASAPI or direct device mode.

Recently I uninstalled 2 low class filters: PxHelp20 v.3.00.56a and AsapiW2K v.6.0.2.27 - because I had occasional burning failures of DVD and CD. Eversince deinstallation burning worked fine.

Could this odd reading problem be related to these filters missing?

I must also note that Plextools Pro XL v.3.13 does not recognize any audio CD's, even the pressed ones. Plextor drives on XP do not have a proprietory driver. So, there is nothing to reinstall to repair this issue.

Yet another anomaly I observed is that Nero InfoTool 5.2.3.0 crashes when it starts collecting information about the hardware.

Googling around did not bring any relevant advice.

Filter Driver Load Order v1.0.009 does not reveal any mismatches with the Device Manager and Registry.

    Any ideas?

    Alex

I had a similar problem, some types of media were not readable, even pressed dvd-roms. I fixed the issue by gently cleaning the lense with a q-tip and 100% alcohol. how to do this: - open the tray and disconnect its power cable so the drive stays open. - remove the four screws on the back, unclick the bezel and lift the cover. (of course do NOT do this if you have still warranty left) - very gently rub the lense with a clean q-tip with a little bit of 100% isopropyl-alcohol (take nothing else) - put all together, and finally pray :-)   good luck, it worked for me.
    Answer by harley2ride, Friday 14th of November 2008 17:52
Quickest way to see if it was the filters, is to do a system restore to a time when you still had the filters, and see if that fixes it. IF so you have your answer. If not, you have eliminated one possible cause.

  • When connect Plextor-760A, Xp in Dual boot does not work
  • Question by Palm Beach, Tuesday 29th of July 2008 02:17
    Hi all.
    My system :
    Asus Maximus Formula II
    4 GB RAM
    SATA WD 320 GB RAID 1 C:
    SATA WD 64 GB D: ( 50GB) & E: (590 GB)
    NVIDIA 9600 GT
LG SATA Blu Ray GGC -H20L
    LIAN LI Case
    OCZ 700 w PS

I installed Windows XP on the D: first, then Windows Vista Enterprise on the C:.
Everything works fine. All drivers, etc.

When I attempt to add my Plextor PX-760A, which is the onlt IDE device with my system, upon boot, Windows XP is an option, and when selected, the monitor screen remains black & does not boot. I can boot into Vista, but only after a long wait. If I disconnect the PX-760A, the system flies, & no problems booting into XP or Vista.
Any suggestions to install the PX-760A?
    Thanks in advance.
Answer by Two Degrees, Tuesday 29th of July 2008 02:38
That board has a Marvell SATA/IDE controller that is pretty new; maybe there is an option in the BIOS to set it to legacy IDE mode?

  • No disc present in drive using AnyDVD and CloneDVD
  • Question by steven8234, Wednesday 2nd of July 2008 18:29
    Hello all,

I've actually got multiple problems that just started up for some reason. I am trying to back up some DVD's that I've got and I keep getting errors. The first one is an error with anydvd. It won't recognize that I'm putting a dvd in either DVD drive I have. I'm currentlyusing a Plextor PX-760A and a Toshiba SDR5372V drive. I have backed up countless DVD's using these two drives all with not problems. I recently updated my software (because the popup window told me there was a new update available) My AnyDVD version is 6.4.5.0 and my CloneDVD version is 2.9.1.9. CloneDVD is saying that my drive is not ready but I can access both of my drives using windows. I'm currently using Windows XP SP2.

    I've tried the following:

    Reinstalled the software
    rebooted computer numrous times
    started AnyDVD in safemode
    and reinstalled drivers.

    is there something I'm missing?

First off turn off the reminder that checks up for update. You can do that yourself. What movie is it that your having problem with? Also they have SP3 out now FYI. What other software did you install after getting the latest version from Slysoft? What kinda firewall settings do you have and AV settings? What was your prior version of Anydvd and CloneDVD??
    Answer by linx05, Thursday 3rd of July 2008 07:17
    @coolcolors
Why are you telling him to disable the update check? How does that help the problem he is having?

    @steven
Post a log (Right click AnyDVD in the system tray > Create Logfile) and post it here.

Second, what errors are you getting and from what programs? Please state the _exact_ errors.

Do you insert the DVD and that's when the problem occurs or do you try to rip it with a program. If so, which program?

For one thing it doing update takes up valuable resources. Just a time saving tip that he himself can do manually.

It does not. It opens a connection to the slysoft website, checks the version on there compared to the one installed and then proceeds to let you know or not.

It is recommended to keep the update check enabled to let the user know when an important update is released. Otherwise they will be using an old version which could cause problems later down the track with DVDs or trouble shooting.
Answer by blutach, Thursday 3rd of July 2008 15:59
Checking the setting for updates or not isn't gunna help him.

@steven - try this. First uninstall the program. Then check your filter drivers. Easiest is with ImgBurn - see the tools menu. There should be no filter drivers other than redbook and imapi. If anydvd is there, remove it.

    Reboot and test your drive.

    Reinstall and reboot.

    Regards

    @blutach
I asked him to post an AnyDVD log so we could see what filters he had loaded.

I'm not sure if you knew that or not. Smilie

Linx5 I don't get any errors what so ever, I put the disc in and nothing happens. AnyDVD show's both of my drives as empty. Since AnyDVD isn't Decoding the disc I don't even get to the CloneDVD problem. NOw the Clone problem I was seeing was when AnyDVD finishes removing the protections I bring up the TSVideo file and rip it. No problem it's when it goes to write it the status text is saying drive not ready. I seen that problem 3 or 4 time then I'd restart and retry it and it would work. Then yesterday or the day before I was going to rip Disney's Treasure Island and that's when AnyDVD just went caput. I've tried several other DVD's and none of them work now.

Also where the heck is the Logfile stored at? I can't find it. I right click on the little fox and clicked on "create Logfile" but I can't find where it's storing it...even doing a search.
Answer by JRude, Saturday 5th of July 2008 09:30
C Drive > Documents & Settings > Your PC user name > My Documents
The logfile may or may NOT indicate the disc title as printed. When your logfile is complete you should have a pathway showing in the box. Log it again and check where they go. Arrange files by date modified and it will be at the top after you log it again. I always move mine to a special folder, and keep them. ;- )

No, I don't want any expansion card PCI or PCIe, just adapter from motherboard's SATA to Plextor's IDE.

Like a dongle you plug on the back of the drive? I have one but for ODD's it doesn't work as planned. Might work ok for a HDD. If so i haven't heard of anything good that works. Most people use IDE/PCI cards here.

Yes, like a dongle. And I'm well informed about problems with ODDs. It's the reason of my question here!
    Answer by Udo-Andreas, Saturday 28th of June 2008 09:56
In summer 2004 I had tested several adapters to connect PATA to SATA. None of them could be used with my PX-708A. Therefore I bought in Oct. 2004 the PX-712SA.
