Question bydaffeh, Wednesday 12th of November 2008 11:57
i bought this drive in August with my new pc and didn't really use it for anything other than installing vista, quake4 and visual studio.
Recently he had alot of trouble reading the fifa09 DVD, had to try about 5 times to make it stop spinning and eventually didn't get it installed.
Now i wanted to burn some dvd's but i always end up getting size errors during verification (target smaller than source or smth). He even doesn't write on the disk afaik. He also sometimes refuses to take the disk after 2 minutes of spinning up and down
Is my drive fubar? or can it be mobo / sata cable / vista?
firmware SB00
gigabyte EP45-DS3 mobo F8 firmware
Vista x64 SP1
E8500 no oc
4gig ram

Question bydunnyd, Wednesday 22nd of October 2008 15:39
A couple of days ago my samsung sh-s203b stopped detecting any dvd's or cd's that i put in the tray.the only way it will recognize one is if i reboot my PC,then it will work perfectly untill i then put another dvd or cd into it ,in which case it fails to detect the new one. I have updated the firmware and drivers and now am at a loss on what to do next. any help would be appreciated
I am using Vista 64
Answer byjeff53404, Wednesday 22nd of October 2008 15:43
Hi dunnyd and welcome:
You could try the attached link. Please post back with the results as there are probably other options for resolving your problem.
Follow the directions here to delete the upper and lower filter values in the registry. Then remove the device from the Device Manager and reboot:
You can no longer access the CD drive or the DVD drive, or you receive an error message after you remove a CD recording program or a DVD recording program in Windows XP: "error code 31"
While this article says it's for XP, it's my understanding that it'll work just fine for Vista.

I'm not a complete newbie but I don't do this very often. I just built a new computer and have a lot of DVDs I want to make backups of. The new PC has two dvd drives (both samsung SH-203) and have some Verbatim DVD+DL discs.
I have AnyDVD and CloneDVD and wanted to use them to use CloneDVD to burn to the second drive from the first and have AnyDVD decrypt it on the fly, but CloneDVD won't do, saying that it wont work because of copy protection. Is there any way to do what I want or am I going to have to be patient and rip and burn them all individually?
Thanks

Yes.
Answer byBob, Friday 3rd of October 2008 05:04
If you need to shrink to fit on 4.7gig disc then yeah no on the fly but CloneCD will burn an the fly a DL to DL burn. Or it will burn a 4.7gig to 4.7gig on the fly also.
Answer byRhymemaker, Monday 6th of October 2008 15:49
In Addition - DVD43 can run in the background making your disc appear copy protect free which might help. My opinion is to rip to HDD first. Less chance of errors through buffering etc.
Answer byripit, Monday 6th of October 2008 16:07
He said that he had anydvd so that should be working in the background and it should have worked? Are you sure anydvd is enabled/running? Fyi, it would be better to use dvd decryptor to rip and imgburn to burn if you are going to use dual layer disks. If you are going to compress to single layer, then clone dvd is good.

Thanks all, sorry for the delay in replying. CloneCD is exactly what I'm looking for.
Question bypg8cvd31, Wednesday 24th of September 2008 23:26
My CD/DVD component (TS-H653B) is shown as "not available" under Windows Vista "system info". It also shows error-39 for this component. I can insert a DVD and can hear it power up in the case, but Windows does not recognize it. Checked the two cable plug-ins on back of the drive, and they seem secure. Ran "regcure" tool just in case of a registry error, but no change. Help!
Answer byArachne, Wednesday 24th of September 2008 23:29
Welcome to the forum
Have a look at this MS support page, follow the instructions for removing your upper and lower filters, and hopefully that should do the trick.
If you're wary about editing the Registry, then set a system restore point or backup your Registry first
Question bySqueeken, Monday 11th of August 2008 21:42
Ok I've had this problem for awhile now; maybe someone here can shed some light on it for me.
I've got two SATA hard drives connected to the MB... No problems
I've got one PATA Sony DVD-RW connected... No problems
I've got one SATA Samsung DVD-RW connected... PROBLEM sometimes
The drive is a Samsung SH-S203B.
PROBLEM:
During boot-up, the system will occassionally lock up at "detecting drives". It locks up specifically when trying to detect the Samsung drive. The system always boots perfectly if I disconnect the Samsung drive from the MB.
TROUBLSHOOTING:
I have tried connecting the drive to a different SATA connector.
I have tried different SATA cables.
I have RMAed to Samsung drive, for an identical model.
My drivers are up to date (nForce 9.64).
My Samsung firmware is up to date (SB04).
Answer bysoulsurvivor, Monday 11th of August 2008 21:47
A while ago I had this board.
You could try Windows drivers for your controllers.
But I had to fall back on SATA PCI Controller card based on the SiliconImage chipset.
Flashed to BASE BIOS (Non-Raid) & specific drivers for CDRW/DVDRW's.
Answer bySqueeken, Monday 11th of August 2008 21:50
Soulsurvivor,
Did you have this same problem?
Answer bysoulsurvivor, Monday 11th of August 2008 22:01
Yes.
The onboard controllers were not really suited to Optical Disc Drives.
So would work sometimes, but even then performance was poor.
Very inconsistent.
If lucky MS drivers may work for you (though my experience says this unlikely).
Have used two SiliconImage cards.
The 3512 & 3114.
Both are excellent.
Answer bygetit29, Tuesday 12th of August 2008 00:35
I didn't have exactly the same problem as you are having with boot up but when I was
using the Nvidia NForce IDE mobo drivers my Samsung 203B drives wouldn't burn the
DVD discs correctly. They would hang at writing the lead-in and ruin the disc so I just
switched back to the standard MS drivers for the drives that are connected to the mobo
and all was well afterwords. Like soulsurvivor said try the MS drivers and if that doesn't
work then get a Si3114 or Si3512 SATA add in card and that will fix your problem. I'm using
both cards in my system right now for my Sammy drives and they work perfectly.
Answer bymciahel, Tuesday 12th of August 2008 09:20
Hmmm,
since the problem occurs in the beginning of the boot process, there might not be some driver issue, but a general compatibility problem or just some misconfiguration.
To operate a Sata DVD burner, the Sata controller should be configured as IDE/ATA (or whatever that option is called) in Bios setup. Unfortunately, this is not an option if the HDDs are configured as Raid. In that case I also recommend installing a Silicon Image based PCI Sata card (with Base Bios applied).

mciahal,
That makes sense to me. I checked my BIOS settings. I went to "Integrated Peripherals" then to "Serial-ATA Controler".
My options there are...
Disable
SATA-0
SATA-0+1
All Enabled
It is set to "All Enabled".
I do not see any other area that looks like it would apply to my problem. Any suggestions.
Answer bysoulsurvivor, Tuesday 12th of August 2008 19:53
Squeeken,
Your problem is definitely the fact that your SATA controllers aren't really meant for ODD's.
But for HDD's.
Some folk get mislaid because of the term *
Supports six native SATA2 3.0Gb/s devices / Hot-swap capability, allowing disks to be changed without powering down the system / Optimized for NVIDIA MediaShield™ Storage technology / Supports SATA ATAPI* devices.
I believe that the PCI card route is going to be your only option.

If SATA ATAPI support is advertised, then the controller must support opticals. This is even valid for my ancient Promise controller
Assuming I read the correct manual, there is no mentioning of Atapi at all, so you might be correct here. But this would be IMO very strange for recent hardware (even Via managed to have their latest southbridge work with ODD).

Disable Raid for the controller you have hooked your drive to
Don't overclock
Check if there is a newer Bios for your motherboard
If that doesn't help, an add-on card seems the only option then.

Answer bySqueeken, Saturday 16th of August 2008 06:42
I'm not running RAID.
RAID is disabled in the BIOS.
I'm not overclocking at this time either.
My BIOS is P31. There is a P32 BIOS but it only adds Wolfdale support.
Bummer!
Well, at least I now know what the problem is likely to be, and you guys gave me a solution, so I'll just have to decide if I really want the drive enough to buy a SATA card or just pull the drive from the system.
Thanks for all your help.

Question byOscar Yeager, Tuesday 5th of August 2008 23:17
I bought a Samsung SH-S203B SATA DVD burner and have been using it since a couple of weeks. It's worked fine throughout that time, but then yesterday, the drive inexplicably became slow as molasses. It will not read or write faster than 1x, which in practical terms means it now takes about 40 minutes to dump the data from a standard-sized DVD-R to the hard drive, and it takes about as long to write a DVD. What the hell happened?
I haven't messed around with the firmware for this drive or installed any software which could have impacted its performance. The last thing I did before I noticed it was no longer working at full speed was burn a dual-layer disc at 2.4 speed. Anyone have any suggestions?

How is your system set up (RAID/AHCI/IDE mode etc)?
If it's set in the BIOS to IDE compatible mode, the drive could have dropped into PIO mode.

It does appear that that's the problem, and I even know what probably caused it -- I had tried to rip a problematic DVD, which must've forced Windows XP to reduce the drive to PIO mode. Unfortunately, I'm unable to reset the drive to DMA from the Device Manager (it just keeps switching back to PIO-only mode after every reboot), and I don't want to chance losing the data on my hard drive by deleting that IDE channel (both drives are on the same channel). I guess I'll try shutting off the computer, opening the case, disconnecting the DVD burner, rebooting, shutting down again, and reconnecting the burner.
What a PITA to have to go through this every time I try to rip a damaged DVD.
Answer byArachne, Wednesday 6th of August 2008 00:37
Hmmm. Have you tried the "resetdma.vbs" file in one of the posts in my link?
That might work. And if it does, it's a lot less hassle to run that every time you want to rip a dodgy disc.

You might go through this article thoroughly: http://www.winhlp.com/node/10 since a long-term solution is also provided.
Or use an external drive for reading bad discs, since these are not affected from this (atapi.sys) issue at all
Question bykdkrone, Tuesday 5th of August 2008 18:28
I have recently built a new system and installed an SH-203B burner based on reviews. I have it set so that the firmware upgrades itself automatically. I use Memorex DVD+R media, which always burned a movie in a previous system in about 6-7 minutes, as I recall (I may need to piece that unit back together and time it).
Anyway, in this new system, the fastest burning that I obtain with ImageBurn is about 2.4X, even though I changed from Automatic to 6X for the setting. The DVD is rated at 16X burn.
Are there some settings I can tweak to increase the burn speed?
Thanks

I don't like these firmware auto updaters. If something goes wrong, your drive is dead. So I suggest to uninstall that software and download newer firmwares manually. If you like, you can subscribe to the "firmware announcement" thread to get a notification if newer firmware is available.

Some people call these Memowrecks.
Please post the MID (the corresponding part of the Imgburn log should suffice)

There is something really wrong. Lowest speed for DVD+R is 4x (at least this is what can be taken from the firmware).
Please provide information about the Sata controller you are using and its configuration (IDE/ATA;AHCI;Raid;whatever).
The DVD is rated at 16X burn.
That's just what the manufacturer prints on the box
Are there some settings I can tweak to increase the burn speed?
Are you ready to sacrifice a disc?
Run Nero CD/DVD Speed and have it create a disc. Start with the maximum speed that is offered. Post the screenshot here.

yes and not only that some newer firmwares have been known to be not as good as the previous one. Not often but it has happened.

There is something really wrong. Lowest speed for DVD+R is 4x (at least this is what can be taken from the firmware).
Please provide information about the Sata controller you are using and its configuration (IDE/ATA;AHCI;Raid;whatever).
I am using the SATA controller on my Intel mb DP35DP. Two onboard serial controllers. The Samsung is attached to the first, ICH9 4 port SATA storage controller 2920. (operating system Windows XP Pro, SP3) They are not configured as RAID or AHCI. Note that there has been no change to the configuration of the system in the past few months and initially it would burn at 8X or a little more.
Are you ready to sacrifice a disc?
Run Nero CD/DVD Speed and have it create a disc. Start with the maximum speed that is offered. Post the screenshot here.
Michael
Here is the log. It is pretty lengthy. Despite the fact that it said it was copying at 18X, it took 24 minutes.
Thanks for taking the time to help with this.

Only two things i can say that might make some sence, first to defrag your HDD, and the sedond is to try some other sata port, i had this almost the same problem with my 203D, always the buffers was 0-90% and never reached the selected speed, but after a few experiments everything now works fine no dropping buffer and also no slowdowns in burn speed.

what are the current transfer modes? Just setting "DMA if available" is not sufficient.

Well, I have been making some progress. But first, where do I check the transfer modes?
Last night I re-read an earlier post that you had recommended and ran a .vbs file named resetmydma.vbs. With that I was able to get to a max write speed of 13.6 with an average of 9.6. The buffer and the device buffer ran about 100% max.
That speed is fine with me but if there are other tweaks I can do to get the speed even higher, I am all ears to hear what they are. Many thanks, by the way, for all of this help. It is awesome!

13,6x for a 3GB source file is perfectly ok, the drive will reach the maximum speed at the end of a full disc. I personally would not go faster than 12x max with that media btw.

OK, here are the transfer modes:
First, there are 3 primary and 3 secondary.
Transfer modes:
Primary IDE channels
First primary Device 0 not applicable
Device 1 not applicable
(This raises the question of how does this info help? Can I use this to help me figure out what piece of equipment is on which SATA controller? If so, how?)
Thanks

Which media can be written reliably faster? What do you use?

Verbatim and TY is the choice that most of CDF would say, i also think that there is no point on going faster that 12x/16x, unless you want to do some testing.

nothing to complain about here.

This helps confirming if the drives are really running in DMA mode. Many people think, they enable "DMA if available" and are set.
From the information given in this post, it is not possible to tell what drive is hooked on which connector.
Additional information is often given by the properties of the drive as shown in device manager.
Question bydragosb, Wednesday 30th of July 2008 14:52
Hello,
I have just installed VISTA 64 and installed NERO 8. When I start NERO I can choose only the image recorder and I do not have my Samsung SH-203B recorder in the list.
I can read all my discs in windows explorer.
I allready tried to reinstall nero and also used their cleaning tool but the result is just the same.
Please help
Thanks
Answer bymciahel, Wednesday 30th of July 2008 22:38
Hi and Welcome!
what happens if you try other burning software like ImgBurn? Also, have you installed the latest Nero Updates?
Michael
Answer bydragosb, Thursday 31st of July 2008 23:34
Thanks for the answer.
I did not try any other software but I resolved the problem. It seems that the VIA Hyperion drivers for the SATA controler were the problem. I rooled back the drivers for the controler to the Microsoft original drivers and now everything works fine.
Thanks again for your answer
