  • New!Burner doesnt recognise blank DVD's?
  • Question by dill78, Monday 25th of August 2008 14:19
Just uninstalled Nero 8 and now my Sony DVD RW AW-G170A doesnt recognise blank DVD R's or CD's. Have uninstalled it (sony DVD) and reinstalled to no avail. Even reinstalled Nero and it still doesnt work.

I've bought Roxio copy and convert just incase my Nero is buggered. But its still not working?? Please can anyone help??? Doh
Answer by CDuncle, Monday 25th of August 2008 15:19
First of all, you cannot have Nero and Roxio installed at the same time, they do not like it.
To install Roxio, you have to use Nero Clean Tools to uninstall all traces of Nero and than install Roxio.
When you talk about Uninstalling and Reinstalling DVD, was this done through Device Manager or how?
    Answer by dill78, Monday 25th of August 2008 15:42
Yeah, through device manager. Did uninstall Nero when I installed Roxio. But Nero options still come up when I insert a blank disk ie: What would you like to do?? "view or open files, create data disk with Nero" etc.

Is Nero clean tools a download... or is it with Nero 8 package??
    Answer by Psycho6, Monday 25th of August 2008 16:01
    dill78,

Nero CleanTool is a short download from Nero.

    Try the link below

    http://www.nero.com/enu/downloads-cleantools.html

    Hope this helps
Answer by CDuncle, Monday 25th of August 2008 16:03
Yes, Nero Clean Tool is on their site, free download.
Just make sure you get Clean Tool for Nero8 as they have those for 7also.
    Answer by dill78, Monday 25th of August 2008 16:06
Nice one... cheers both of you, for your help. I'll give it a try and let you know what happens. tvmSmilie
    Answer by dill78, Monday 25th of August 2008 16:25
I've tried that, reinstalled Roxio, just in case.

Now I dont get any options in the "what would you like windows to do", when I insert a blank DVD. Not even "view files in a folder" and my "Itunes" option has vanished??

When using Roxio I am now getting an "unspecified error 0x80004005". And it wont let me eject my disk either. It thinks the drive is still in use.

    Any ideas peeps??
Answer by CDuncle, Monday 25th of August 2008 16:44
Did you restart a computer after clean tool use?
If you run WinXP, you can always go back to previous setup in restore.
What I would do is to uninstall Roxio first.
Restart using Shut Down, wait for 10 to 15 sec before restarting.
    Use Clean tool.
    Shut down again. Wait
    Restart and install Roxio.
Answer by CDuncle, Monday 25th of August 2008 17:17
Cannot edit so new message. Last step.
Uninstall drive in Manager, shut down.
Restart and let Windows install the driver.
    Answer by dill78, Monday 25th of August 2008 17:32
I'll give a go now. Cheers
    Answer by dill78, Monday 25th of August 2008 18:37
Still no joy.... same errors coming up too. When I go into My Computer it is listed as "CD Drive D:" Should it say DVD drive??

It recognises the disk as a DVD R in My Computer, but not in Roxio, it keeps asking me to insert blank disk. This happened when using Nero, so thats why I bought Roxio. Also, it says 0 bytes in free space and total space when I hover my cursor over the D: drive. Shouldn't it be saying 4.7Gb free space??

    God damn PC's lol.
Answer by CDuncle, Monday 25th of August 2008 18:56
That it reads CD drive is OK. WinXP does it sometime.
In properties it will not show empty space on DVD because it is not HD, computer cannot read it.
As for Roxio, there must be some driver conflict, which Nero messed up.
Also check on Roxio web site if they have some clean tools of their own, or some diagnostic for their product.
I remember when I used that product, long time ago, they need some ASPI driver which Nero does not recognise.
Hope somebody who has that software will have a solution.
In a mean time, get ImgBurn (free) and see if you can write to DVD with that one.
Answer by Arachne, Monday 25th of August 2008 19:00
Here's a thought since it's not recognising any blank media - do you have Alcohol or Daemon Tools installed?

(If you don't, don't install them hehe. If you do, a simple settings change may be all that's needed).

Regarding Roxio, it might help if you uninstall and then reinstall that to get it working again without error.

Edit: there is a Roxio Clean Tool of sorts, it's called RoxioZap or something Smilie
    Answer by dill78, Monday 25th of August 2008 19:17
I dont have either installed....... OS I'll keep it that way. lol.

I'll have a look for the Roxio clean tool and give that a try.

    Thanking youWink
Answer by Arachne, Monday 25th of August 2008 19:20
Yeah, choose which you like between Roxio and Nero, and just use one would be my advice. Smilie

Now. Since it's not Alcohol or Daemon Tools etc causing this, then it could be the packet-writing portion of either Nero or Roxio.

Whichever software you decide to reinstall, don't install Nero's InCD or Roxio's Drag to Disk (I think that's what the Roxio packet writing part is called).

I think it's a software problem...it's just finding out which software is causing the problem Wink

Mind you, if it were me...I'd bite the bullet and reinstall everything Wink

  • DVD Read Problems
  • Question by matterking, Friday 8th of August 2008 09:01
    Hi
I've got this weird problem. I have two optical drives; a samsung combo drive (SM 352B) and a Sony Dvd writer (AW G170A). I notice that when I burn some dvds on my sony, after being done, they cannot be read by the sony drive but can be read on the samsung drive. What could be the prob? I use Nero 8 for burning, run XP, P4 2.6GHz, and have 512MB RAM.
    Answer by Dialysis1, Friday 8th of August 2008 09:23
Can you could post a burn log?

How often have you cleaned your laser lens? How do you have your burners connected? What kinda media are you using? Could be bad media or burning to fast. What is the exact version of Nero 8 do you have.
Answer by matterking, Saturday 9th of August 2008 06:48
@ Dialysis: I'll post a log as soon as i have the problem.
My dvd writer is jus a few weeks old. Nero version is 8.2.8.0. Both optical drives are connected in parallel to an IDE, with I initially used Moser baer DVD-R media for writing. Once i started having this trouble, I switched over to Sony DVD+R discs. Then the problem stopped. I also found that I had trouble with the MB dvds when I burnt them at 18x, while writing at lower speeds eliminated the problem. Though I've found the solution (ie. use sony Dvds), I'm just curious as to how and why certain dvd's that were burnt on my sony can't be read by it but can be read and played on a samsung combo drive.

  • SONY aw-g170a: doesn't write, Nero gives calibration error
  • Question by TnF0, Sunday 3rd of August 2008 19:04
Hi. Today i tried to burn a dvd, and nero gave me a power calibration error along a command sequence error. I searched up the problem, and i've tried everything.

Different firmwares(original and custom ones)/other ide and power cables/different apps and os/unistalling and reinstalling drivers of the ide channels/controller/different ide channel/unistalling intel application accelarator/ different blank media/tried to continue a multisession/cleaning the lens, and opening the drive to check that.

And still the drive can only read perfectly, but can't write! Does anyone knows any working fix?

    Thanks.

  • Sony Dvd Rw Aw-g70a
  • Question by ivk, Monday 7th of July 2008 12:06
SONY DVD RW AW-G70A, current firmware version 1.62
I can't flash the new firmware to the drive using binflash, an error pops up "error submitting checksum". Currently my drive identifies as a dvd writer, but can't read/write any disks. Operating system asks for insert disk
Answer by Liggy, Monday 7th of July 2008 22:15
Your drive must be in PIO mode in order to flash it. Depending on the IDE chipset, booting Windows in safe mode might work.

If the drives are attached to an SI0680 controller, changing the registry similar to this description could work.
Answer by ivk, Tuesday 8th of July 2008 08:43
In safe mode I flashed my drive (SONY DVD RW AW-G170A, DRU-170C) with the firmware 1.73, but my problem not rectified. And the same procedure used to flash with the file downloaded from http://rapidshare.com/files/103875623/AWG170A_1.4.rar is worked for me. Now I can read dvds using my drive and didn't tried writing to disk.
Answer by ivk, Wednesday 9th of July 2008 10:11
Burning dvd failed due to Power calibration error

  • sony r/w awa-g170a drive-dvd reading problem
  • Question by aniket.awati, Friday 27th of June 2008 20:08
After reading much on this problem from earlier posts i have updated the firmware, and now even the bios. My motherboard is Asus p4bgv-mx.
This drive doesn't read dvds on random basis. some dvds are read on it and some aren't.

Even dvds written by this drive aren't recognised on it after i updated the bios.
    What more can I do?

One more thing, when i tried to install opensuse 10.3 from this dirve and it did start the boot manager and started installation fine, but suddenly it says it cant find software repository. and this is for all dvds of suse.
I even tried to connect a same drive of my friend to my pc, but that too has same problem.

WHAT SHOULD I DO? PLEASE HELP MEReally Sad
    Answer by eric93se, Friday 27th of June 2008 21:09
Either try re-downloading your copy of linux, or buy a new DVD drive. The Pioneer 115 or 215 /sata version/ are recomended.

Since you tried a second dvd drive already, I would have to assume that your drive is not at fault. But you could try cleaning the laser lens on the drive. Link
