    Welcome to the forum Smilie

If the drive has problems only with DVDs but read/write perfectly CDs, then the drive is damaged. There are two separate lasers in the optical pickup, and apparently in your drive the DVD laser is gone.

You should ask for a RMA if the computer is still under warranty, or alternatively you must get a new drive to replace the damaged one.

    Hi,

Thank you for the info. Where can i get a new drive for my laptop and how do i replace it. pl suggest.

To get a new internal drive for your laptop you should ask to the retailer, if the computer is still under warranty.

Alternatively, and maybe the best solution (even if it is more cumbersome) is to get an external drive to be used via the USB port.

  • DVD+R DL won't start burning
  • Question by trueegor, Saturday 18th of October 2008 03:33
I am trying to burn DVD video to a Memorex DVD+R DL disk with a DW-Q58A in a Dell Precision M90. It doesn't even start burning before it errors out complaining about the disk.

I tried several disks (from the same spindle).
    Firmware is UDS2.
Mode is Set to MDA when available

I have tried all of the following Software with similar results.

    Sonic RecordNow! Plus
    CDBurnerXP
    Nero 7.0.8.2

Are the disks I bought, really that bad? Any suggestions?

    Hi trueegor and welcome:

I hope that's a typo and you mean DMA (otherwise, I'm stumped).
The media you are using is terrible. The only proven and recommended DL media is Verbatim which is usually available locally.

To eliminate program issues, you might want to try imgburn or a number of other free and recommended programs. Please post back if you have any questions or to let us know your progress.

Yes, the disks you have are not very good. The only dual layer disks we recommend are Verbatim.

And burning dual layer on a laptop is courageous of you anyway. Laptop drives are not the best choice for this type of media.

Try some of the slower speed Verbatim DL....2.4x speed. This will be your best shot in that burner. Also, we recommend using ImgBurn for dual layer burns. It is a free burning program and there are extensive guides to using it at the ImgBurn forums. http://forum.imgburn.com/index.php?showforum=4

If you plan on burning a lot of dual layer disks with this laptop, you might consider an external dvd drive.
Answer by trueegor, Saturday 18th of October 2008 04:08
Ok, thanks for the help. I didn't realize it would be this complicated. I've burned a lot of DVD+Rs without issue.

    Anyway, thanks again.
    Answer by jeff53404, Saturday 18th of October 2008 04:12
Poor quality media can also be an issue with + or - R media as well which is why many members recommend Verbatim or Taiyo Yuden (TY) for SL discs.

DL media presents a different set of issues and for consistency, reliability and quality, members stick with Verbatim DL.

I have the same player and recently bought the same discs, and get the message "write protected" using imgburn and when I tried a generic burn with iTunes. I will try some Verbatiims, but are the discs really so bad that out of the 5-pack I bought, none of them should work? It's hard to believe they are that bad and that there isn't something wrong with the player (though my DMA settings seem to be correct and I've never had a problem burning any sort of non-DL media).
Answer by _chef_, Saturday 1st of November 2008 12:21
You should use Verbatim DL media.
    Answer by Bryan_P, Saturday 1st of November 2008 23:28
Wow, the first Verbatim disc worked perfectly. Thanks!

  • DVD Fab 4 Ripping/Burning Problem
  • Question by mase2626, Saturday 27th of September 2008 21:41
I am no longer able to Rip or Burn DVDs using DVD Fab 4. I believe this problem arose when I used a program (Daemon Tools) to view ISO files. DVD playback from my physical CD Drive became choppy and I was no longer able to use DVD Fab 4 to rip or burn DVDs...I didn't necessarily get an error message, but the processes would just hang up.

I recently found a fix to the DVD playback issue by reverting my 2ndary IDE Channel Transfer Mode from PIO ~> UDMA. However, I am still unable to use DVD Fab 4 to rip or burn DVDs. I was wondering if anybody could offer any possible solutions to restore the function of DVD Fab 4.

    Thank you for your help,
    Mike

Hi Mike and welcome to the club Flower
You would be better off if you was to update to ver 5, course you will have to go to dvdfab.com and ask for a new key...if you paid for the product then you can get it for free with no problem, you will need to use the email address that was used to buy it..note ..if your address has changed then you will have to have it changed in their database first.

You may want to do a clean uninstall using the guide below in my signature then install

Upgraded and the problem persists. Ver 5 is still getting hung up when i attempt to burn or rip a DVD. Confused

    Agree
You may continue to have problems after the uninstall, but keep your fingers crossed. If you do experience persistent problems, I'd check out the Daemon Tools forum
    Answer by mase2626, Sunday 28th of September 2008 19:25
I uninstalled Daemon Tools immediately after it caused the problems to my system. I've already posted at the Daemon Tools forums...although their suggestions helped me fix the problem to my CD ROM drive, I'm still experiencing problems with DVDFab.

I'm wondering if it's still an issue with DMA. It seems to me the program still recognizes the drive as being in PIO mode...the playback through the preview feature on this program is choppy..identical to what i was once experiencing through my drive using other media players.

I've recently found the options in DVDFab to check for DMA automatically and Reset DMA. I've enabled the first and tried the second. Havn't had succes with either...Any other suggestions?
Answer by maineman, Sunday 28th of September 2008 19:42
There are two "DMA" links in my sig
The first is a quick illustration re: uninstalling the appropriate IDE channel (generally the secondary).

The second contains very informative article and is worth the time it takes to read. Also contained is a VBS Script file which is more reliable than the reset in Fab...just click on the here link near the top.

Hope this helps and let us know...

Problem fixed! Yeah i actually came across that article but didn't pay it much mind...choosing instead to use a fix i found off the dell website which obviously didn't fully correct the problem. This one did, thank you for your help...i really do appreciate it.
