  • Clone dvd playability issue
  • Question by jamesfaulkner_85, Sunday 7th of September 2008 11:28
Ok i'm not great with computer jargon so please be gentle, i'm also a newbie so appologies if i've posted in the wrong area.

I've been backing up my dvds for years (using dvd decrypter to rip & clone dvd to burn) and never experienced any problems until i bought my new computer.

Stage 1 - I managed to rip a dvd to my computer and burn it to disc, this played ok on my crown dvd player but kept freezing on the menu when played on my g/f's hitachi dvd player. I then re-burnt the dvd files on my g/f's laptop and the movie played fine on both dvd players.

Stage 2 - I downloaded a movie (not copyrighted) in video_ts format to my computer, burnt it using clone dvd and got the message 'disc may not be playable on this player' when trying to watch it on the hitachi player, i put the disc in my computer and all the files were named in chinese.
Once again i moved the video_ts files to my g/f's laptop, burnt using clone dvd and the movie is perfectly watchable on the hitachi player.

*i realised my computers disk drive was set to the wrong region, which explains the chinese files.

Stage 3 - So after changing my disk drive to the correct region i hoped my problem would have gone away, but it didnt. Now when i burn a disk it plays perfectly on my computer but not the hitachi dvd player. I know your thinking this might be down to the type of writable media i'm using, but i ruled that out due to the fact that when burning to the same type of disk using my g/f's laptop the disk is perfectly playable on any device.

If anyone has got any suggestions it would be greatly appreciated, i've searched the internet for solutions and had no luck so far, many thanks, James.
Answer by coolcolors, Sunday 7th of September 2008 22:38
We need some more specs. Is the hitachi a standalone player>? How old is your hitachi unit? So are you using the Optiac to burn to the media. Did you test just using a regular store bought dvd movie to play on the hitachi unit to see what is does?? It sounds like your hitachi is picky or on its last leg of going out.

  • Sony aw-q170a doesn't recognize all DVDs anymore
  • Question by lettier, Sunday 31st of August 2008 02:41
I have a Sony AW-Q170A or as I understand it a Optiarc NEC AD-5170A. Anyway, I've had the drive for a little over half a year now and it just recently will not recognize my DVDs. Except, I left this one DVD in it for awhile because the game (FEAR) needed it for me to play. It will read this DVD every time without fail which is confusing because I've tried multiple DVDs and they are not recognized. So I read multiple posts on this issue and I flashed the drive with the one provided by the Sony site as well as the one from Libby's. Went into safe mode etc. Still nothing but it still plays that FEAR disk without fail.

    Suggestions?

On a side note I was so pissed off I bought a LITEON from NewEgg but I would love to keep my Sony working.

Thanks for any help! Big Grin

  • DVD not working in PC,but working in Standalone player
  • Question by mac007, Tuesday 29th of July 2008 15:11
    Hi,
I got some new DVD's from my friend. All those are working fine in Standalone DVD players. But in windows enviorment(XP,Vista),its not reading. The title as well as the size of disc is been shown but all the files as 0kb.I am using a RPC1 firmware only.(Optiarc AD 5170A,Ver 1.11)

I heard from your forum that reason could be some software encoding on this DVD's.If that's the case please give me suggestions on how to tackle it and enable to play it on my PC. thanks in Advance

Have you tried using software like DVDFab Decrypter, DVD Decrypter, Anydvd, etc to copy the dvd contents to your HD ? You cant simply use Windows drag and drop/copy to move files off a dvd to your HD due to the copy protection on them.
    Answer by mac007, Monday 4th of August 2008 07:21
Hmmm ...to be frank i dont find that suggestion gonna work Disagree.I also uses Klm codec- Media player classic which plays almost everything on earth and it dint worked in that software also.Anyways thanks for your suggestion Agree.

OK, let's start again are these dvd's purchased or are they burned dvd's.EDIT sorry forgot what I was going to say
Answer by ChickenMan, Monday 4th of August 2008 07:55
Try installing Anydvd, it sits in the background and will auto remove any copy protection on the fly and will allow normal playback. Maybe a bit jerky but that depends on the actual PC specs. Just give it a try first.

Hmm,those DVD's are bought from my friend. Not sure whether its a purchased one or pirated one but very sure that its not a burnt one.Since it came along with the box, i assume he bought it.

OK then could be a bad source disc. Like I said earlier try VLC player as it has worked on many dvd's for me and other cdfreaks members. As I said before it free so does not hurt to try it.
Answer by GJ, Monday 4th of August 2008 09:24
OK, Try IsoPuzzle here is a link to a download http://www.geocities.com/marsoupilamis/ And also try using ImgBurn in read mode to copy the disc as an ISO to your HDD. Then use powerdvd or media center to watch. EDIT: you will need to have anydvd running if dvd is copy protected. Hence purchased dvd but if burned then you not need anydvd
Answer by Pianoman, Monday 4th of August 2008 11:45
Ok, I see this is going to be a bit to deep..let's stay easy! Wink

At first, try to update your PowerDVD to the latest version:
    http://de.cyberlink.com/multi/download/download.jsp

Maybe try to uninstall PowerDVD and reinstall it again, also you could install the trial version of PowerDVD 8 (for testing).

Try VLC to play the DVD
    http://www.videolan.org/vlc/

    If nothing works:

Install DVDFab HD Decerypter (free) and rip the disc to your hard drive, this will take about 10-15min depending on your hardware.
Then try to watch the files from your hd with PowerDVD.
    OR
Install AnyDVD from Slysoft and try to Play the DVD with PowerDVD

    Good luck Flower

    Hi all,
Thanks a lot to all of you for your reply.Copying the movies to my hard disk with DVD decrypter worked for me Smilie.
However working AnyDVD in background dint helped me (Niether watcing it from drive nor copying it to hard disk). One more thing I noticed is when AnyDVD is running in background it produces slight glitches for playing normal DVD which is not encrypted one).Guess one day i can make real use of this software.

My DVD-RW Optiarc AD-5170A don't read one DVD-R 1X-8X (PRINCO) written on another writer at 6X. It is normal ? I need help. Thank you Costin.
Answer by bjkg, Thursday 17th of July 2008 15:27
    @ costin,

    Welcome to the Forum.

In seeing that the particular DVD in question is known problematic cheap poor quality Princo Media your problem is not unusual. Princo Media has a rich well-documented history of being problematic cheap poor quality Media and experienced well-informed knowledgeable users avoid (do not use) the problematic Princo Media.

Suggest only using known proven quality error free Media that consistently produces quality error free such as Taiyo Yuden or Verbatim Media.

  • Will burn, but wont read Traxdata DVDs
  • Question by libervisco, Monday 30th of June 2008 05:41
    Hello,

I have a rather strange problem. My DVD burner, which is Optiarc AD-5170A, doesn't seem to be able to read any of my Traxdata DVD-R's (16x) even though it detects the ones that are blank and is able to burn them.

It reads all other DVD's that I have, including Octron CD+RW, Imation CD+R, various magazine DVDs etc. I suspected that perhaps any laser defect that might be causing it became too sensitive to the color of the Traxdata DVD's (purple), but Imation has the same color yet can be read properly.

What's more, it was able to read them all not long ago and neither of these DVD's were burned more than a few months ago. They also work properly when I read them with another DVD reader. So degradation or media corruption of any sort is definitely out of the question.

All things considered it does seem like the burner's laser is getting defective. I am just puzzled that it is ONLY Traxdata DVD-R's which it wont read. How can a defect affect only a single type of DVD?? Why would this happen?

Anyway, most of these DVD's I burned at slower. They contain a number of video files. After burning I checked that I can watch them before storing them. I burned them so I can free some space on my HD and hopefully store them for viewing any time I want. (It is only since my visit to this forum that I learned traxdata's aren't actually good for this sort of use, and this is after I just bought a spindle of 25 of them Frown ).

An interesting thing I discovered about the few of these DVDs that I tested, trying to read them with my (possibly defective) burner is that the dvd+rw-tools mediainfo command states the following:

    READ TRACK INFORMATION[#1]:
    Track State: complete,damaged

I wonder what "damaged" here refers to. These are the disks which I burned fine some months ago or so, the disks it read fine before and now suddenly wont.

Could it be that the burns were not good all along and now that the burner is crapping out (or whatever is happening) it is failing to read disks which have "damaged" track state? I mean, as the laser is getting defective it is getting more sensitive to burn errors?

If this is a sign that I should replace my burner I most certainly will. But I just wish to learn more about what happened here so I can know what NOT to do in the future. One thing I know is that I'll never buy Traxdata again. loveit

    Cheers

"They also work properly when I read them with another DVD reader. So degradation or media corruption of any sort is definitely out of the question."

dvd drives differ in their reading abilities. what is this other drive?

can your burner read a newly burned Traxdata?
Answer by libervisco, Monday 30th of June 2008 06:15
The other one is an LG GDR-8163B DVD-ROM, an old one made on February 2005.

Also, the current burner can't read newly burned Traxdata DVDs anymores. It used to be able to do that, just as reading any other Traxdata's, but apparently not anymore.
    Answer by troy512, Monday 30th of June 2008 06:25
what program are you using to burn and what is you burn speed?

It is only since my visit to this forum that I learned traxdata's aren't actually good for this sort of use

Answer by libervisco, Monday 30th of June 2008 06:35
I usually use Nautilus which has a CD burner plugin or K3B which is a pretty famous burning program for Linux users.

I think both use dvd+rw-tools as their backend for burning.

I am usually quite conservative with speeds because, since using some crappy Imation DVD's usually got me a bad burn (some files actually not working) I became pretty paranoid about burning DVDs. I tend to do DVDs around 4 to 8x or so. Although last couple of times I burned a traxdata I left it at "maximum possible", which picks the proper speed automatically.

EDIT: Forgot to mention, I just tried again some of these traxdata DVD's with my old LG reader and ran mediainfo and under "READ TRACK INFORMATION[#1]" now it says just "complete" instead of "complete, damaged". Seems like this info changes depending on the reader used, which could mean that even though while using the current burner tells me the track is damaged it might not be so, but rather the burner just couldn't read it properly and so it gives the (false) information that it's damaged.

    Thanks
    Answer by troy512, Monday 30th of June 2008 06:54
well i dont know about those programs, but i would guess max possible is not a safe speed.

do any of the video dvds play in your dvd player?

does your burning program keep a log? can you find it and post a portion containing traxdata burn?
Answer by libervisco, Monday 30th of June 2008 16:29
I think in this case maximum possible may just be like "auto", as in maximum possible safe speeds.

I just tried an original movie DVD and it worked so yeah, video DVDs work.

About the logs, I don't have the old ones since I changed the OS, but I just burned a new one using K3B (successfully) and here is the log: http://pastebin.com/f161a8e73

Of course, even though the burn was successful, the burner would not read it. Confused

    Thanks
    Answer by troy512, Monday 30th of June 2008 17:38
interesting log. ive never seen a log from this program. Confused

looks like you are burning an audio dvd? or is this just a data dvd with mp3 files?

anyway looks like the burn speed jumps around to unreliable speeds.

    "Current Write Speed" is 16.4x1352KBps.
    5570560/4560777216 ( 0.1%) @1.0x,
    14942208/4560777216 ( 0.3%) @0.2x
    81419520/4560777216 ( 8.4%) @6.4x
    467402752/4560777216 (10.2%) @3.1x
    632913920/4560777216 (13.9%) @6.2x
    657129472/4560777216 (14.4%) @2.4x
then pretty much stays at 4x for the rest of the burn

im not really sure what to make of this. i guess if you say the disc is good then it should by all means play in the Optiarc drive. strange?

maybe some else can help. sorry

id say dont buy these disc anymore and get some taiyo yuden branded dvd+r 8x media with the MID of YUDEN000T02.

    such as these here.
    http://www.rima.com/Merchant2/merchant.mv?Screen=PROD&Store_Code=R&Product_Code=1733-100&Category_Code=DVPTY
Answer by libervisco, Monday 30th of June 2008 17:54
It's a data CD with various kinds of files, including images and mp3s too. I noticed while it was burning that the actual burning speed was rather low. I left it at "auto".

It sure is strange. Optiarc starts like it's gonna load it, but then stops and nothing happens. When I try to mount it manually (using the mount -t iso9660 /dev/hdb /media/cdrom command) in the system wide messages log it says:

attempt to access beyond end of device
    hdb: rw=0, want=68, limit=4
    isofs_fill_super: bread failed, dev=hdb, iso_blknum=16, block=16

That's what it always does when failing to read these DVDs.

Although I don't think the media is at issue here really I wont be buying Traxdata anymore, mostly because what I learned on this forum. I've got more than plenty of them now for short-term backups, iso burns and so on. For archiving I was thinking of buying Verbatim because I didn't see any Taiyo Yuden around here (in Zagreb, Croatia), but I'll look for it again.

Thank you for trying to help.

I think it's just a strange defection with the laser failing to read certain types of media like the traxdata ones, but I don't have many other types to test if it's only traxdata so it's still possible that it'd fail to read some other too. But the fact that the LG reader reads them fine yet Optiarc wont seems to be a fairly compelling evidence that the Optiarc is broken.

I was going to buy a SATA drive sooner or later anyway, and the warranty of this one has expired so.. no big deal. Feel free to suggest a good DVD burner (I was thinking Samsung, LiteON or LG). Smilie

    Cheers
    Answer by troy512, Monday 30th of June 2008 17:59
i dont know what burning apps are available for linux. but have you tried other burner apps. also i dont know why you would have to mount the dvd to read it. although as i said i dont know about linux either.

do you have a traxdata dvd with a dvd-video written to it?
Answer by libervisco, Monday 30th of June 2008 18:29
There are a few more, but I think all of them use the same basic backend for burning so I'm not sure it makes much of a difference.

Usually you don't have to mount if the operating system does it automatically and nowadays most versions of Linux do. I tried to mount manually only because it didn't do so by itself (due to the reading problem).

If divx video files count as dvd-video then yes, most of the traxdata dvd's I burned have video on it (which works well with the LG reader).

Btw, do you know of "Matt Silver" branded Verbatim disks? I wonder if those are the good quality ones (from MCC or TY?).
    Answer by troy512, Monday 30th of June 2008 21:38
well this web page looks like official verbatim page.
    http://www.verbatim-europe.co.uk/en_1/product_dvd-r-matt-silver_21.html
    http://www.verbatim-europe.co.uk/en_1/product_dvd-r-matt-silver_46.html

might want to check out the blank media forum for good buys in europe.
