Verbatim shows feasibility of 8 speed DVD+R double layer burning

Verbatim Europe has announced that is making engineering samples of 8x DVD+R double layer available to burner/recorder manufacturers to help them developing and optimizing the performance of their devices. The company expects to ship the media to consumers in the third quarter of 2005.

'Our mission is to provide our customers with the industry's most durable high-speed DL media and the broadest compatibility," said Ryuhei Sato, Verbatims Optical Director. 'Since we have already established the materials and mass production process for Double Layer DVD+R we can leverage that experience to develop the higher-speed media using many of the same proven procedures. Working with leading drive manufacturers from the development stage through fine tuning helps them achieve the best compatibility between their hardware and our media."

Verbatim also added that 8x double layer (8.5 GB) burning means that the disc is burned in less then 15 minutes. More information can be found in the press release. Discuss double layer media in our Media Forum.

I'm not convinced that DL media is reliable. I'll be sticking with SL and DVD-RAM for most of storage needs instead.
DL discs still cost too much. I don't care burning at 2.4x but give me a cheaper DVD+R DL!!! Frown
All my DL burns (2 of them) have been flawless. What more could you ask for? biggrin
I've only purchased 1 3-pack of DL and it was from Newegg for $25.00 with a $10.00 Verbatim rebate. At net $5.00 per disk, I felt it was worth it. All three burned flawlessly with my Plextor PX-716SA and play on all players available to me (my Malata, Sony), my son's Sony and my dad's Denon.
maybe this is just a myth you hear on the net, but doesn't the speed you burn a disc at effect the overall quality?
