Windows Media Player 10 is out for your downloading pleasure

eranros used our news submit to tell us Media Player 10 is up on the Microsoft servers, ready for your inspection. Actually, I have been playing with the beta version for a while. The file management feature is nice, sporting three panes which makes it easy to create playlists. Unfortunately, my MP3 player will only accept Winamp playlists. I hope iRiver is going to do something about this with a firmware update. Another handy advancement that may be supported by most manufacturers through firmware upgrades, is Media Transfer Protocol. With this, you can transfer files from your PC to Media Player 10 or vice versa easily and even synch your player. Neat.

Windows Media Player 10 gives you more music and more choices, and for the first time makes it possible to sync high-quality music, video, and photos to the latest portable devices.

Couple this with Windows Media DRM 10 for Portable Devices, as a nice convenient way to push products over the Internet and you have a real powerhouse. Everyone is there - Walmart, Napster, CinemaNow and even Musicmatch. Well almost everyone, I didn't see RealNetworks or iTunes. That's odd... Oh, did I mention MSN Music? It has 3 exclamation marks after it's name on the browse page.

But, that isn't too exciting these days. So, what if you can download high definition clips in 1080i with 5.1 surround sound from IMAX? It takes about 5 minutes on a good broadband connection in order to view a 2 minute clip. Using WMV9 of course. Then, if you like it, they will sell you the DVD. Nice and convenient. Microsoft, love them or hate them. They are all business. Why not check out Media Player 10? But, don't forget to set a restore point!

WMP10 is awesome, much better than previous versions. While WMP has changed over time, I'm come to like those changes. This time MS has simplified WMP instead of made it more complicated, which is a good move and a refreshing change.

This thing sure was buggy for me. Had to click on menu items 2 or three times to get them to work, wouldn't go back to the now playing after doing search for cd title, and that big red x at the top. Is this still the beta version?

StonerWTF, it looks exactly like iTunes! Hmmm... I wonder why they didn't put it in SP2.

DRM 10? Even more intrusive and cumbersome DRM to contend with? No thanks.
By bcn_246, Friday 03 September 2004 22:24
bcn_246hmmm... stop bitching about drm. we only ahve to get drm if you download a drm protected file. it wont play if you dont have drm 10 installed so what is the problem? i just got WM10 and i have to say well done Microsoft Smilie, the mp3 ripper is the best and now WM is my primery music player, yeh sure there are better playback programs out there, but WM is compatible, stable, gets the job dont simply and well. it also starts up fast. ben.supergrin

I install WMP9 for codecs etc, but use Classic Media Player to play files, 688kb file, beat that!!devildevil
By warforpeace, Tuesday 07 September 2004 15:21
warforpeaceIt's not hard to beat that size. Just press F3 while in Total Commander :P Or even better, I can compile a Visual C routine that uses multimedia commands ('play', 'stop' and so on). It shouldn't be more than 50 Kb Big Grin
