51Gb capacity HD DVD announced by Toshiba
According to a news published at HDTV, Toshiba has announced that it is submitting specifications to the standard's overseer for a new 51Gb format HD-DVD disc.

Basically, the capacity increase is obtained adding a third layer to already existing discs. Toshiba has not yet proved the technical feasibility of the new technology, but plans to release the new format towards the end of 2007.

DukeNukem Will older (relatively speaking, of course) HD DVD players be able to play these 3-layer discs?
shaolin007 This is exactly why I am waiting before buying HDDVD or Bluray. Hopefully, after a few years, the market will settle and the format/s are locked in. That way, my odds of getting burnt are limited.
Older HD DVD players will not be able to play these discs, which is a shame. Unless they can do it with a firmware release but i doubt it.
