Target doubles space for Blu-ray titles.

We are all aware of the HD DVD Blu-ray war and that the Blu-ray format seems to be winning out based on sales of media.  Retailers have long expressed their dislike of this mess and clearly want to sell a single format.

Target had previously announced that they would carry exclusively Blu-ray players as of this fall and now they have quietly expanded their shelf space to carry roughly twice the number of Blu-ray titles while keeping the space for HD DVD at the same levels.  Since a number of studios have made the decision to only release in one HD format, Target, as well as other retailers, really cannot give up either format, but they can indicate their preference.

This is a bold move for Target, especially as the lowest priced HD DVD player is currently $200 less than the Blu-ray version.  It also looks like Walmart will be lining up behind HD DVD.  As always, the wise user will wait in the wings before making any major investment in either format.

AchantIt was shelf space in rental stores that made up my mind in the vhs/beta wars. Even then I rented a player for a year before committing to buying it. I have no interest in either of these "upgrades" but I think those that do, some will be swayed by shelf space of titles.

"Major investment" might be the key here. I have bought a Toshiba HD DVD player for $230, which I do not consider a "major investment". However, I will continue to only rent the HD DVDs from Netflix until the situation gets settled (if ever).

Wal-Mart is lining up behind HD DVD? That's funny- they easily carry 4 times as many Blu-ray Discs as HD DVDs at the locations in the DFW area. Toshiba did offer them huge financial incentives to exclusively back HD DVD, but I heard they passed on that.

Neither format warrants any attention by Joe Six pack. DVD still rules.

I went to my local Super Target store today, and sure enough, there were 2 columns in the 6-feet-tall rack for HD DVD and 4 columns for Blu-Ray.

Electrox3dTarget, Walmart, Fry's Electronics, I've seen them all make more room for blu-ray because there is simply more blu-ray movies and more blu-ray movies being sold. I'm sorry, you want to spend as close to $0 on a player as possible, but the fact is, most people buy blu-ray media, blu-ray is the cheaper movie on the shelf, and it has the most titles.
