How do you get your brand in today's news? By simply saying a few interesting things... Sharp wants an 8x Blu-ray laser diode by 2010! The company stated that they want to release a 250mW blue laser diode for 6x recording as well as the first diode for 8x recorders in the next two years. Sharp is a company with a long tradition, a player that we saw back in the eighties working with CDs. Could this announcement be a stunt, or is it a serious announcement?
Today the company gave a presentation in Japan about the latest developments related to laser diodes. Their latest series of recorders were showcased during the presentation, and these recorders could burn dual-layer Blu-ray Discs at 6x speed. Sharp said that they will start with manufacturing two variations of the new diode in April. The GH04P25A4G features a proprietary facet structure and its ultra compact dimensions (3.3mm diameter) make it suitable for use in notebook BD drives. The second model features a diameter of 5.6mm and can be installed in desktop BD drives.
These two variations can handle 6x recording on dual-layer Blu-ray discs because both are supported by a 250mW power output. Besides these plans, Sharp showcased another amazing idea: an 8x laser diode by 2010... This powerful diode will be able to burn single and dual layer Blu-ray discs at 8x, using a power output of 300mW. This will be more likely to reach the mass production stage in 2009, followed by a 400mW device for multi-layer 8~12x recording in 2010.
If Sharp's announcement will really develop into an amazing product by 2010 can't be said yet... But, we will make sure that they remember what they promised on the 21st of March in 2008! ;)
