Super Talent makes PCIe SSD upgrades for Eee PC

While the EEE offers much of the functionality of full size laptop despite its small physical size, one significant drawback is its tiny SSD, especially the Windows models that only come with up to 12GB capacity.  While this is fine for someone who mainly uses the netbook for mobile Internet access, e-mail and documents, it is too little for someone intersted in bringing plenty of video content on the move, such as on a holiday.  As the EEE features a mini PCIe slot, Super Talent has developed a range of PCIe based SSDs to allow users to add additional storage capacity to their EEE.

The Super Talent PCIe cards come in capacity choices of 16GB, 32GB and 64GB, which are priced at $53, $79 and $149 respectively.  All feature read and write transfer rates of 40MB/s and 15MB/s, respectively.  While this is slow compared to other SSDs, this is sufficient for most uses on the EEE, including playing video.  The SSDs still have an advantage over the SDHC slot by offering faster transfer rates than most SDHC cards and use less power than connecting an external USB HDD.

These drives are expected to start shipping in November.
