Sherwood announces $300 Blu-ray player

Sherwood America has announced it will release a Profile 1.1 Blu-ray player next month with a retail price of $299.95.

The Sherwood BDP-5003, Sherwood's first attempt at a Blu-ray player, supports Profile 1.1, 1080p playback, and video playback at 60 Hz and 24Hz, among other features.

"This is a very exciting time for consumers," said Jeffrey Hipps, Sherwood Sr. Vice President of Marketing and Product Development.  "We are thrilled to be able to offer an advanced player that not only supports Blu-ray 1080p video output but also has built-in decoding for the latest lossless audio formats from Dolby TrueHD and DTS-Master Audio HD.  Our BDP-5003 player makes high-definition video and lossless audio newly affordable."

A full specification sheet for the player is expected to be released in the next few weeks.

Even though this is Sherwood's first foray in Blu-ray, the company is well known among home audio and video enthusiasts.

Blu-ray manufacturers have announced news products and slashed prices, in an attempt to try and entice consumers to adopt the struggling technology.  Movie studios also have released more movie titles for lower prices, but Blu-ray adoption has still been limited.

The Sherwood BDP-5003 will retail at $299.95, but it most likely will receive at least one price cut as retailers begin to cut prices in preparation for the Christmas holiday shopping season.

Probably the same manufacturer as the new Memorex and Olevia Blu-ray players.

Unless I'm mistaken, Sherwood makes bottom-of-the-barrel junk. Three hundred bones seems a bit steep to me considering brand name Blu-ray players will be $150 come black Friday.

Sherwood has two lines of products, A Sherwood line and a Newcastle line. The Newcastle line is their high end product line. The Blu-ray players that are being released fall into the Newcastle line.

I'll pass still too expensive lmao. When the player becomes $150 then i'll think about it but until then forget it they can keep it. I'll keep enjoying my dvd player on my recent purchase of a CRT that shows black areas instead of a white screen and washed out colors caugh! LCD hahaha.
