A new 100 GB Blu-ray disc developed by Hitachi
According to a news published at Daily Tech, Hitachi developed a new Blu-ray disc with a capacity of 100 GB and, most important, this disc is compatible with already existing players.

This high capacity has been obtained increasing the number of layers on the disc. The disc was revealed at CEATEC JAPAN 2007 by Hitachi, and there is also a workaround to develop an eight-layer variant of the technology to obtain 200 GB capacity on a single sided disc.

According to Hitachi, this quad-layer disc will be fully compatible with existing devices only with a firmware update.

It is sweet, but you have to wonder what something like a fingerprint or any fine scratches would do to unreadability.

Lets see how long it takes to get these discs to market..at a realistic price.....if they ever make it. Lets say Hitachi has gets 90% yield per later. 4 layers = 66% overall yield. Not very cost effective. More layers always = more costs...do the math..I know your all smart enough....... Smilie
