A new standard for eSATA?
According to a news published at Ars Technica, the SATA-IO (Serial ATA International Organization) has announced that it's working on a new standard aimed at delivering power over eSATA. The goal is to deliver enough power down an eSATA connection to run a single 2.5" drive.

At the moment, eSATA connection requires an external power supply, making it more cumbersome compared to USB and Firewire standards.

The first results should be available sometime in the second half of 2008.

How does eSATA requiring an external power supply make it more cumbersome than USB and Firewire? Both optical drives and hard drives use external power supplies over USB and Firewire.

@krkdnose: If you read the article, it pertains to 2.5" hard drives. The majority of 2.5" external drives are powered from USB or Firewire - only on eSATA do they require an external PSU or derive power from USB, (requiring another cable).
