ASUS introduces low-noise HD-DVD drive
ASUS, a well-known Taiwanese electronics company, is introducing the new low-noise HD-DVD drive HR-0205T. It can read single- and dual-layer HD-DVD-ROM discs and single-layer HD-DVD-R discs at 2.4x and supports reading DVD formats at 5x and CD formats at 15x speed. Writing discs is not supported. The drive is equipped with 8 MB of cache.

While the DVD and CD playback speeds may not be spectacular, the IDE/PATA-based drive only produces 21.1 dB of noise while reading HD-DVD movies and 23.7 dB while playing back dual-layer DVD Video, according to the manufacturer.
(For comparison, typical notebook hard drives emit about 26 dB while in operation.)

There are no details on pricing yet.

That's fantastic spin. If your drive is slow as snot, call it quiet.

No mention of it being able to write HD DVD so no use with HD DVD players selling for $100 ~ $200 in the US..

Slow...err...low noise would be great for a HTPC. I can't even play CDs in my PC because the drive spins the disc so fast, it destroys the music.
