Alleged Drink or Die ringleader may face extradition to US

GristyMcFisty used our news submit to tell us he spotted news about Hew Raymond Griffith, alleged Internet pirate and ringleader of the group "Drink or Die". It seems he might be getting extradited to the US after all. This would send the signal to those in New Zealand and Australia that the long arm of the law can reach out and touch someone from across the equator. Hew Ramond Griffith is facing some stiff penalties as he is accused of distribution of some 50 million dollars worth of software illegally.

Mark Kelly, senior associate at Auckland's Simpson Grierson, said the Hew Raymond Griffiths case in Australia confirmed that people based in one country and accused of software piracy could be brought to justice in another under extradition law.

While the copyright offences were "found to have occurred in the US", Griffiths had never been to the US and was not a "fugitive" in the sense that he was fleeing and hiding from the extradition-seeking country, Hudson said.

Kelly said: "It means technically that a software pirate in Grey Lynn could end up in an American court, even though copyright infringement or conspiracy to do so are not the usual offences that come before the court."

If Mr. Griffith heads for the US to be tried in that legal system, he is in line for some serious trouble. According to the report, he is eligible to receive a fine of up to a half million dollars, even though it is unclear if he ever profited from the illegal venture. In addition, he is also subject to a sentence of ten years in a penitentiary for his alleged efforts.

Considering the fact that 11 other Drink or Die members have already been tried and convicted, odds are he won't escape the situation either.

punjabi_mc"People get mad at me for these views (anti-American government opinions). They say, 'If you don't like this country, why don't you get out of it?' And I say, 'Because I don't want to be victimized by its foreign policy.'" -Barry Crimmins

Ah! All Part And Parcel of the DMCA & the North American/Australia Free Trade Deal, no wonder our Primeminister Little Johnny, was so enthusiastic to ram it through parliament without free public debate. It's time to vote for a new government! Hopefully by October 9th 2004 the present dysfuntional leaders of this fine country who prefer to provide fiction rather than facts will be expelled legally in the upcoming Federal Election. We now have a new dedicated website 'johnhowardlies.com' It is a sad day in this fair and sunburnt countrycry

Get this right guys.... He violated the laws, ok? He deserved it... If people don't like the laws, they are always welcome to kill it.... instead of letting them go live! If they go live, that means majority of them agreed to them, it's a simple rule. So again, don't do those kind of stuffs!

masterbw, what a load of shit. These comments of yours are obviously the result of brainwashing caused by the propaganda that the american government continues to espouse. The fact is that the government is controlled by the few rather than the majority. Can you honestly say that the majority of americans want laws that jail you for downloading a few songs! Wake up smell the roses and be a bit more critical, George W Bush and his compatriots are looking after their own interest not the general publics.

NeoRonin.....Hellooooooooo......!!!! Distribution of 50 million dollars of illegal software. Yeah, I'd say that's breaking the law, to grossly understate the situation. The guy deserves full punishment. Rag on America all you want, but what's right is right.

punistationBrittany Spears better watch out. There are some nasty Shariah laws in Saudi Arabia, and they're gonna come for her if this test case succeeds. Has China arrested and seized any US citizens yet? They'll have the right to any day now. Have YOU broken any Chinese laws... lately? ALL governments can arrest ANYONE, EVERYWHERE? What lunacy. (Woops. My bad. It's just America grabbing everyone else. I guess that makes it okay, right?) puke

What you seem to forget is that this guy made no money from his "pirate" activities. He was a file sharer, a hacker breaking the copy protections at the time. Here we applaud dvd Jon but the same must apply. This is what I am talking about. 50 million dollars and he recieved not a red cent, maybe not even a thank you from the people who downloaded the stuff he shared.

It's not about the money, inside share traders, Account dippers, trust fund admins do it every day and get away with it, it's about america holding the sword of damocles over the heads of "friendly countries" knowing there will only be one outcome. Australia has 2 accused terrorists sitting in a dog cage in cuba, 4 years and the kangaroo court is about to start. Should allies accept this treatment of their nationals (thanks to a toad, we obviously do). I'm sure if two american citizens where arrested conspiring to commit an act of terrorism in australia we would be able to let them languish in our dungeons at our leisure...yeh right.... sure, be proud of your country, your heritage and who you are but why let jingoism cloud what is right ,what is fair and what is morally acceptable..........cool
