Also format war possible in blu-ray technology - can't decide

Currently there is a lot of hassle if you want to buy new devices that use a technology that is based on improvments in optical storage technology. If you want to buy a DVD recorder you will have to know about the DVD- and the DVD+ format, and if you want to buy audio equipment then you need to know about the SuperAudio CD and DVD-Audio.

It is still not really clear what format will becomes the standard, and it seems that also the latest technology based on the blue laser will have a problem like this. Blue laser technology currently also has two camps and just when we tought the companies agreed on one standard the DVD forum has announced this is not true:

In June 2002, the Steering Committee of the DVD Forum formed two Subgroups of the Forum's standing Working Group 11 'to study and promote the best technical approach based on" 0.6mm and 0.1mm technologies respectively for blue laser optical disc applications. At the same time, the Steering Committee also formed a Subcommittee to work with the Blu-ray Disc Founders toward reaching an agreement to work together on a common format. The first of the two Subgroups was formed in June, and is now studying 0.6mm technology. To date, no 0.1mm technology has been proposed to the DVD Forum. The DVD Forum has so far made no decision to adopt or reject any proposed format (either 0.1mm or 0.6mm) for blue laser optical disc applications.

So, the companies now still will need to decide what format to pick. Read more about Blue laser technology here. The current struggle is between Toshia and NEC that have planned another technology developed by Sony and others. Read more about that here.
