As many are already aware, if an MP3 player has iPod written on it, it will sell like hotcakes:  This time, Apple has launched a new version of its iPod Shuffle, under half the size of its original model.  The new model features 1GB of capacity and a new design, which looks more like a clip-on remote control for an MP3 player due to its size, look and design.  It includes a dock, a quick start guide and the usual white earphones. For connection, it features a single earphone socket, where the dock and power supply also connect up to.  Unfortunately, unlike the original iPod Shuffle, the dock is required for connection.  As expected, it features the bare essentials - volume, track and play/pause buttons, a shuffle/sequential playback switch and an on/off switch.  Finally, it features a 12 hour battery.  It currently retails for US$79.

While some manufacturers often think more features is better, despite this being as basic as an MP3 player could possibly go, Apple has reported a tremendous success already of this player following its launch last Friday and the holiday sales have yet to come!  Analysts are also predicting that this may even out sell Apple's entire line of iPods.  During the last quarter of 2005, Apple shipped over 14 million iPods and the projections are set at 14 to 20 million during this last quarter.
 
On the other hand, for many less-technical consumers, it seems that the less features a device has, the more likely it will do just as well (if not better) than the higher end models.  For many consumers, if it requires no more knowledge to operate than a cassette tape player, that would suit them perfectly.
