Apple's DVD-, CD-burning out reach

Although Mac fans are applauding Apple's new DVD- and CD-burning software, some will be dismayed to learn that they don't have the hardware required to take full advantage of the programs.
The iDVD program, which lets Mac owners burn home movies and photos onto discs that can be played on a standard DVD player, only works if someone has a DVD-recordable drive. And that drive will be found only on the upcoming top-of-the-line Power Mac.

The free iTunes program runs on all computers using at least version 9 of the Mac operating system. But the CD-burning function requires a CD-rewritable drive that Apple is adding, at least for now, only to its business-oriented Power Mac line.

Analysts worry that Apple is offering software that primarily appeals to consumers but is including the necessary drives only on business models.

"No one who (buys) an iMac today can use iTunes to create CDs without buying additional hardware," said David Bailey, an analyst with Gerard Klauer Mattison.

Because there are no new consumer models with a CD-RW drive, analysts say, it will be tough for iTunes to become a significant force in driving Apple's sales in the near term.

No wonder they are screwed.
Apple never learns from its mistakes.
If twilight (or cb) came up with a dvd full of mac shit, I would certainly buy an apple ))
Here is something for you.. Lamers like you dont realise that Macintosh is a far much better Personal Computer. Its more stable and Apple take care of the quality to a greater extent. I know all the reactions now but I have been using a PC for ever and I'm not thinking of getting a Mac since the software isnt good enough so far. But dont say such stupid things when you dont know about it. Most people who have tried a Mac understand this. SCSI is a standard for Mac and has been for ages ! I believe my Mac SE has SCSI (not sure) and that has around 8 mhz or something. The computer works fine. I dont use it but still... think about it.. Graphical interface has always nearly been a part of Mac. Too bad no one realises this. But its often like that.. Eg. PS has worse graphics then Dreamcast but still Dreamcast is making huge minuses. Would be glad to hear your opions.

2 words:

Yeah right!

Try Windows 2000. That's stable! And yes apple will spend maybe more time on his products. But they don't make good one!
RMX then why does BIG companies which make PCs make exact copies of the Apple ideas. Apple has always been good in design for example. Windows 2000 is NOT made for the usual users but the Mac OS applies to both proffisonals and amatuers. They don't need different OS(es). Most people use Windows ME to 95. Look at the "Cube" that's something no one has ! So don't claim Apples products dont make any sense.
It seems like their is not so many Mac in the world to make two difrent OS and release these at the same time for difrent kind of users. It just would not pay and that is what its all about.
mac sux

1. they only have one mouse button - and the argument that they can do with one what we do with 2 doesn't work, they have to hold for a context menu.

2. I don't like not being able to turn your pc off by a power button. what happens when it crashes (ill come to this later)? you pull the power supply & the hdd goes bang (and mac ones do)

3. you say macs dont crash, this is only because they only run a very small range of s/ware. this is stable, but completely useless. you get a pc with windows me & word and see how stable it is! at my old school they made a mac network - it ALWAYS CRASHED! put any complex stuff on and it will crash.
I use windows, but the truth is that mac os is better. Windows is based on mac os. Microsoft has stolen every invention of apple. I've seen the bé¨ta of Mac OS X. It's going to be a revolution! Remember that before making fun of Apple.
Based on the Mac OS? What about the Amiga... or the Action Replay for the C64? They were windows-based too and way before the Mac OS. I do think the Mac is a nice machine for DTP, but more stable then MS Windows...I doubt it...
I don't want to get into the whole PC v Mac debate but we have to recognise that there are far more disgruntled PC users in terms of OS than there are Mac users. I look at it this way. You will find Technics SL1200 turntables in the best clubs just as you would find MACs monopolising the publishing industry. Reliability breeds satisfaction....nuff said 8-)
"1" is right...

The problem, if there is any (i sure as hell don't have any), with the operating systems and 3rd party software, is that there is so many compatibility-problems. And this is not something easy to fix...

Don't piss on Microsoft just because they are the one whose operating system is on just about every serious private users PC...

I always hear Mac is good with graphics/design. Fine by me but i sure as hell use my PC for various actions!

I don't even know or hear about a place in Denmark (where i live) they sell Mac, at least not close where i live... but we have 100+ PC-stores... this should finish off the talk.
All you ppl are missing the main point.

MAC are mainly used in the music and graphic desgn industry because they are faster, more easy to use and cheaper then a PC of the same processing speed. The MAC arcutecture is pure genius. The processer chips are totaly different than AMD and !ntel cpus and run much faster. The downside is that Apple dont know much about the computer industry and block complanies from making add-ons for their pcs.

you can only install apple components into a MAC.

pcs have a much more open archutecture which allows millions of companies to make add-ons for them.

MAC are only good if u are a graphic designer or into major music creation
Apple is crap. They are now the ones who are trying to become like PC's. Graphic designers use macs only because the professional print shops use macs, who only use macs because they invested big $$$ in it years ago, and now it's cheaper to stay with macs than totally replace everything. I used to be a mac guy, and man am I glad to get away from that cult. IT IS ALL HYPE!!! All fashion and no substance. Maybe OSX will be different, but the linux people know that Apple will fuck it up like they always do. Go with Linux. Then Windows. Then read a book.
Looks like some of YOU don't know what you're talking about. If Macs were so much faster than PCs then why did Mac / Motorolla "just" discover 133mhz Front Side Bus speed and 4X AGP in their new Macs?? Also in their "new" top of the line Power Mac, it comes with a GeForce 2 MX, which is the low end GeForce 2 chip and some crappy onboard Yamaha sound card. Do you know why they used to say Mac was better for graphics??? It's because Adobe and other high end graphical softwares were made only for Macs and Macs ususally had more onboard & video memory. I don't know if any of you have actually used OS 10 (beta) for Mac but I have. Do you know what that is?? It emulates other OSs like OS 9 in different application windows. By doing this they can have multi-tasking but it's slow as shit!!! An OS running on top of another OS. Plus they got a bunch of new sliding / moving icons on their desktop now that eats up a bunch of resources. Mac may have been stong in the past but it's dying, I know alot of Mac'ers that have converted over to PC and love it. It's sad when a company has to say "our computers are 4Xs faster than the Pentium 4" just to sell their products (always some crap like that on the Apple homepage).
I didnt buy a Mac for the following reasons:

1) Very FEW amount of software available for MAC including Games (Which for a system that supposed to be very good in graphics and sound should have alot more)

2) No 3rd party hardware support.. I dont have a choice of taking something out of my computer and getting something new from a company for alot less than Apple sells it for.. Fact is you cannot go out and buy different hardware from different companies and choose the best prices and build yourself a Mac from scratch..

3) I felt it was more a business computer than a PERSONAL computer.. Fact is that most of the pages I go to are PC orientated and supported..

Again these are MY reasons, not to be confused with yours..
I love my Win98 PC

==================

But it seems you don't know too much about it. Windows can be EMULATED on a Mac. It seems to be really stable. So you can also play win games and apps on a mac.

Macs are also a bit faster than regular new windows PCs. But what do you expect for a pc that's 3x more expensive than a regular PC? And "Macs are easy to use", I think my PC is already too easy to use, I can do about everything I want with it!

But those PowerPCs are really faster than Intel-PCs. A while ago I saw a test on TV. They compared the (new) PIII-600 with the PowerPC. And they used images from mars. The Pentium reached about 2 FPS, while the PowerPC showed them really smooth like a movie, about 30 FPS.

conclusion: unless your an idiot, stick to the WIntel PC!
this remark is based on the people i know who own a MAC: MAC's are for Lamers, losers and NERDS !

ghe ghe ghe.
The inner architecture of a MAC machine is indeed superior to a Intel (PC) machine. But please keep in mind that 40% of the MAC stakes are owned by M$ ! A lot of people do not know that and in the light of this they are talking crap. So Windows OS is almost = MAC OS. They are both crap (I use them both so I know what I am talking about). They are crap on different points and this makes this discussion. I switched to the VERY stable Linux a couple of months ago. I only use Windows for playing games now (and that's the only thing this OS is good for -hahaahehah).
The Mac is now pretty much technically inferior to the PC in every way:

The original MacOS is technically equivelent to Windows 3.1 (no memory protection/premptive multitasking, ...) MacOSX is just another UNIX clone (it is actually just the failed

80's UNIX clone, NeXTStep)

Windows 2000 is technically a superior OS to UNIX. The Win32 APIs may not be pretty, but at least they are comprehensive AND Microsoft to listen to their developers when implementing this type of code. I've used Macs and programmed Macs for many years and I have to say the Windows 2000 is technically light years ahead of MacOS X. The PowerPC processors used in Macs have also fallen quite far behind x86. With Pentium 4, Intel have introduced 128bit SIMD instructions which will disable Apple's ability to selectively benchmark select photoshop filters that depend on the G4's implementation of similar instructions. x86, even without these has better integer performance and (at current clock speeds, better floating point performance)

Coming back to the OS, Windows NT was designed to be a UNIX killer. The first NT was released about 1993, so it's still a relatively young OS and still meets comparable quality constraints to high end UNIX (some Win2k now ships with 99% uptime guarantee). It supports most current PC hardware (which I doubt apple would ever be able to do properly with a MacOS) and is better featured in almost every way than the MacOS. Apple is in trouble simply because they don't have the technical ability to develop their own OS. They failed several times in the 80's and 90's to write a decent MacOS themselves, they've back the wrong processor architecture in PowerPC and they rely solely on styling to sell their products, under the original MacOS, they are unreliable (comparable, if not slightly worse than Win3.1) and under OS X, they are mostly unusable because of lack of compatibility and performance problems.
i do agree with kerrdave. The only good thing to say about windows is the large range of software(games). When i use windows, my computer crash several times a day, but using linux NO crash at all so far. SO WINDOWS SUCKS. Give me the same range of software and i'll never use windows again!! And if it wasn't for linux i would change to MAC rightaway. It's much faster and more stabel than a win-pc. The problem (before) with mac, was the strikt control with hardware and software development, but it's getting MUCH better these days. And my next computer is quite likely going to be mac
