BenQ DW-1640 most popular DVD burner of the moment

The BenQ DW-1640 has been voted as the most popular DVD burner at the moment. This DVD burner seems to be the biggest succesor for BenQ ever and is also sold by other brand names such as Sony, which usually uses Lite-On drives.

The second most popular drive is the NEC ND-3540 which means that NEC did it again and created a drive with a great balance in price and performance. Also Plextor has done a great job with its PX-716, altough Plextor drives are usually a bit more expensive the company managed to be voted at the third place by our visitors.

And for your enjoyment we've added a new poll about the follow up of the DVD, let's see how you think about this at this moment.

nytvdpopular? so is britney spears...

Yeah, George Bush was "popular" enough to get elected too.

"Popular" means nothing if it's derived from a small statistical sample. Any product can be made "popular" by skewing statistics. My primary concern with DVD burners is reliability and compatibility. The BenQ 1640 doesn't win in this area.

owned 6x 1640's at a time, and i can say its compatability and reliability are not worse than any other burner. In fact it is bettered by solidburn, adn quality is almost always top notcH!

I picked one up for $66 Cdn. after shipping and taxes, a great deal! Seems to burn my Prodisc F01 media better than my 3500A.

Rather than just saying it doesn't win, how about telling us which burner you think DOES win. Everyone here would be more than happy to learn about a better drive. Please include why your drive is better as well. Also, I think the sample size is fine here. Over 1,000 is a pretty good sample size. The main issue that can be taken up here is that this is not a random sample. However, considering how many technically inclined people are registered users of cdfreaks, along with cd/dvd 'specialists', I think these results represent fairly well what the better burners to buy might be. (Based on what a cdfreaks user finds important. I'd say this is probably cost, reliability, compatibility, and speed.) It does not tell you which is the actual most popular, just most popular to cdfreaks users. When buying a cd/dvd rom, I'd take the poll results of cdfreaks.com over a correct random US/global poll any day. Well sort of. Wink There's no guarantees someone didn't just pump the poll score up. I have a Benq 1620 and it seems pretty rock solid so far. Also, after having read the Benq forums, you can find lots of good feedback about how people love the 1620/1640 drives. There are some very good burns to be achieved with the drives. Sorry if that was a jumble, it's bed time.

kareljIt's amazing how people bitch and moan regarding the results of polls like these when *their* choice is not number 1. I have no doubt in my mind that the BenQ is a solid burner. But based on my personal experiences my next purchase will be another NEC.

I have two OEM DW1640's, and love 'em! My other burner is a Plextor 712A, and for a single layer burner, it's been very, very good to me as well.

Picked up the DW1640 OEM for $49 before taxes. Wow! Amazing these prices. Drive is getting LOTS of good feedback so word-of-mouth is major! So.. which is a better drive at that price point then?

nytvdhave a nec3520 and a benq1640. the 1640 burns TYG02 better - get a score of 97-8 as compared to the nec at 95-6...big whoop. my car dvd player skips the discs burned on the 1640...never had that problem with the 3520. guess which one i like better?... i will admit that the 1640 reads quieter and i think burns CD's better.
