BenQ releases BW1000 tri-mode Blu-ray writer

News from the BenQ Europe website this morning, indicates that they are officially announcing their BW1000 tri-mode writer, in this following press release. The BW1000 will support the use of CD, DVD and Blu-ray discs, including dual layer Blu-ray.

Blu-Ray technology
The BenQ BW1000 allows several advantages with Blu-Ray technology. For instance, it allows playback and recording of Blu-Ray discs with a storage capacity up to 25GB on a single-layer disc and an astounding 50GB on a double-layer disc. This means you can store up to two hours of high-definition TV or more than 13 hours of standard-definition TV content on a mere single-layer disc. To store data, Blu-Ray discs allow you to store the same capacity as five DVDs on a single disc. In addition, Blu-Ray technology enables you to enjoy a full high-definition viewing experience of Blu-Ray movie discs or, Blu-Ray movie discs created by a high-definition camcorder with 1080p (1920x1080 progressive).

Precision Tilt Control System
The BenQ BW1000 uses a Precision Tilt Control System (PTCS), an extra level of protection against vibration, noisy signals and irregularities in the physical media, in order to avoid you from playback hiccups and failed burns. Moreover, the delicate optical pick-up head unit (OPU) of the sophisticated single-lens design has been kept simple by having all three types of lasers to follow the same beam path, ensuring reliable reads and writes as well as extending the life of the OPU.

SolidBurn and Write Right technology
The BenQ BW1000 also features SolidBurn and Write Right technologies. SolidBurn automatically determines and optimizes the writing settings for recordable media to ensure maximum playability and lifespan. BenQ's Write Right technology provides thorough protection during the writing process which includes Seamless Link (for buffer-under run protection), dynamical jitter calibration (for real-time writing quality consistency) and Walking-OPC (Optimized Power Calibration). Walking OPC dynamically adjusts the power of the laser during the write process to ensure a greater quality consistency.

The BW1000 also encompasses separate LED indicators for Blu-Ray, DVD and CD which will make it easy to know what media you're working with.

The BenQ BW1000 will be available in the market as from end of August 2006 at a suggested retail price of € 799,00 including VAT.

Dr. WhoNice but I think the best buy due to format wars would be a player/writer in all meaning read and write: CD's DVD's, HD-DVD's, Blue Ray's. Then I would see spending $1000.00 alot more easier.

As of this month I have switched from DVDs to hard disc drives. Smilie 250GB for €60 (€0.24) means that a 25GB BR-Disc would have to cost €6! cool And since this is going to take quite a while (and prices per GB will continue to drop for HDDs as well) plus I get all the benefits like increased speed and no worries about lost data (since it will just be used for data storage). loveit

Yes you can't take your hard drive over to your friends or family in order to play it on there tv. You need to lug around a whole computer or you could just lug around a blu ray player and a cd. Also you store all your content on a hard drive that is fragile to drops and bumps while a blu ray disc can be dropped and scratched and still play. A hard drive needs an external power source while a blu ray disc dosn't.

It's better than $1000 Pioneer wants for its drive. Just goes to show much all this PR about how much it costs to make this drive is worth. If BenQ can make the drive $200 cheaper than pioneer MSRP, just how much do you think Pioneer is making on their drive? I really don't think the drives are all that expensive to make, certainly not $1000 the claim it to be.

FidelCDo whatcha want, folks, but to store all my data i will just keep scribbling on the cave walls supergrin

Ian@CDRLabs.comKeep in mind that price is in Euros. If you do the conversion, the BenQ is actually slightly more expensive than the $1000 Pioneer.

CrabbyappletonSomething to remember as well is why is this PC drive the same price or higher than a set top? A set top I can see as it is basically a computer. However, in the case of a PC drive we are sulppliing the computer and the video card! Frown This thing is a rip off! 450 dollars US would be a gods plenty for this thing.

the set top dosn't burn and they are losing money on the settops

A. I couldn't comprehend what he is saying there. B. the part that I can understand is missinformed (burners arn't infected by DRM only you) C. He submittd it 4 times because I guess his 56k modem couldn't handle the load. D. he is atleast smart enough to know that Blu Ray isn't worth $1,000 but as we all know it's not a average-consumer product right now so no one is expecting him or us to.
