Benq dual layer and dual format rumors partly confirmed

Recently we reported about rumors that Benq would introduce a firmware update to make their DW800A a dual format DVD recorder, also other sources told us that Benq would make it possible to add dual layer recording technology to this drive. Still a dual format (DVD+RW and DVD-RW writing capabilities) upgrade is intresting news as Benq is in a joint venture with Philips who is heavily promoting the use of only the DVD+RW format.

According to Benq the rumor about adding support for DVD-RW is a little more complicated. The company is currently investigating the technical possibilities to make this happen. Benq's research and development department in Taiwain is currently investigating to add support for DVD-RW but has as of yet not confirmed that this is technically feasible. A company representative told us that when it is possible it will offer a firmware upgrade as soon as possible.

On the dual layer rumor the company did not comment.

Ian@CDRLabs.comWhen, if, maybe.. I'm seeing those words way too much. BenQ is going to have some very PO'd customers if these "rumors" they're spreading don't pan out.

To translate the whole BenQ story into English... "We think that passibly, maybe our drives can support dual layer. We'll check it out and give you all an answer in a few months. For now, please think that our drives MIGHT support dual layer so go buy them now, in fact, buy 3 of them!"
