Despite all the reports about HD DVD's success in Europe before the European launch of the PS3, it didn't take long for the PS3 to change this. So far, the PS3 has not been considered all that successful in Europe, at last so far, but when it comes to the HD war, it has already helped push Blu-ray sales to the point where the Blu-ray format accounts for 73% of all HD discs sold in Europe over the last year, according to the Blu-ray Association.
In the US, the falling HD DVD player prices have helped to improve its market share, especially with the massive price cuts leading up to Black Friday. According to the HD DVD Group, HD DVD player sales have now exceeded the 750,000 mark, which includes standalone set-top players and Xbox 360 HD DVD add-ons. With Black Friday now over, it will be interesting to see how well the sales continue, particularly in the weeks up to Christmas day.
As the HD DVD specification mandates a network port on all HD DVD players, users who have their player connected online will be able to make use of a community screening feature on upcoming HD DVD titles with this feature, which the group hopes will give it a better edge over its rival. A HD DVD with this feature will enable one to invite others to watch the movie simultaneously between the players, where the host has control over playback. The HD DVD group plans launching this feature with the upcoming Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix HD DVD release.
