According to a news published at BBC, Blockbuster decided to rent Blu-ray as Hi Definition format instead of HD-DVD.
The decision was motivated by consumers that have been choosing the Blu-Ray format over HD DVD in the 250 stores where both were available.
Another factor seems to be the limited availability of HD-DVD titles compared to Blu-ray ones.

HD-DVD can't afford too many more reversals of this nature. When the holiday buying season comes around, the average consumer won't even be able to define 'bitrate' or 'codec'. They'll just be reading reprinted AP stories in their local paper or the one-page tech section in Newsweek or Time. The types of sources that have been favoring Blu-ray.

Blockbuster's decision to support Blu-ray in all of its 1,450 stores is having a bigger impact than it seems. A tipster at an unnamed retailer tells us they've had more HD DVD player orders canceled over the last few days than they've seen over the entire life cycle. The kicker? All of them were canceled because of the Blockbuster announcement.
Not only that, new sales of HD DVD players are nonexistent, with Blu-ray being the only things moving now.

I think this is a big step for Blu-ray.
They have a guaranteed huge buyer, sales and exposure.
I don't own either format or plan to own.

Some HD DVD supporters seem to be pulling out of Blockbuster's online rental service now (even though it will continue to rent HD DVDs like before, this announcement only affects their store locations). I think that's kind of sad though, since Blockbuster said in their announcement that they would keep an eye on the market demand and adjust as needed. If HD DVD supporters would hold back the knee jerk reactions, and actually focus on blockbuster MORE, then there is a decent chance the decision could be changed. But everyone is too high strung for that it seems.

And what good is to have a HD-DVD player even if discounted? Many studios don't issue films for it, space shelf is going to Blu-Ray, hard to find movies to rent, etc. Just watch one of these days Universal issuing a press release saying that, however reluctantly, they will have to join the Blu-Ray bandwagon. All signs are that, despite the desperate moves by Toshiba, your precious format is going under.
