Blu-ray discs not that tough - drop it and this is what you get

Yes, more Blu-ray news, it seems there isn't a day without it. Today we're reporting on something that's already a bit old but hasn't been reported here yet. As you know our site is frequently visited by true freaks and some of them have the habit to share interesting happenings with their optical discs with us.

Member MelonGx thought our Blu-ray and HD-DVD Forum would be the right place to show off a picture of a dropped TDK Durabis 2 Blu-ray disc. Dropping it on the floor did result in a physically damaged disc.

Damaged TDK blu-ray disc

Also our Review Coordinator Zevia decided that it was time for a test and dropped a Blu-ray disc from 6 and 15ft. If you are curious if the disc survived it and how it looked afterwards then visit the original forum thread here.

While TDK has been promoting their ultra tough Blu-ray disc coating Durabis 2 a lot, it seems that it doesn't protect the disc from dropping. Then again, who is dropping their discs? Or is this something that happens more often than I can imagine?

You think more people should know about this? Digg it!

DukeNukem"It dropped to the floor and then it was rolling into the toilet" What was the person doing with the disc in the bathroom? LOL.

The coating is supposed to deal with scratches not fractures from dropping them or other concusive forces. I suggest you try playing frizzby with your dog and your HD-DVD collection as a comparison test. devil

Well you still have people (kids) dropping the disc or otherwise being careless with them so I think its a legitimate complaint. VHS tapes could be thrown around a lot without risking any damage. Space is one thing but what good is all that space if it can be destroyed easily.

This was a BD-R not a standard Blu-ray disc. They are completly different, BD-R are like DVD-r in that they have the optical layer stock onto the opposite side of the disc not embedded in plastic like a commercial Blu-ray.

If it was called Duriba it would be twice as strong as Duribis. Sony should make up for it with a new Bravibis TV brand.
