Blu-ray/HD DVD combo drive from Samsung

Last week some already reported that Samsung was planning to introduce a Blu-ray/HD DVD combo drive this year, but now we are sure. The company confirmed this to CDRinfo.com last Friday. The new drive can be expected this year's September and the burner will be available in the first quarter of 2009. With earlier versions not being a success Samsung now hopes to introduce a best seller.

As a Blu-ray supporter and HD DVD patent owner everybody could've expected this to happen. In the first place this is consumer-friendly and could be considered as a good product as long as they keep the price low. Secondly it helps those that bought HD DVD discs and makes them happy once again. Samsung also kills their own production costs since combo drives are cheaper to make.

Nothing is said about the drive's price, but other Samsung drives started at $500. If this one will be cheaper, this can't be said, but is expected.

Nice, but I will not pay for HD DVD equipment anymore, give me Blu-ray only please! Or are there still studios releasing HD DVD for some reason?

I'm not sure if this drive will have a success without hd dvd-r/rw burning support... AFAIK Verbatim have a license to manufacture HD DVD-RW disks. And Maxell had until they left optical disks business.
