Today we have added a new review to our review database as Tor Magne (better known as OC-Freak on Club CD Freaks) has taken a look at LG's triple format DVD recorder, the GSA-4040B. Triple format burner means that the drive can record both DVD-R(W) and DVD+R(W) media but besides that it can also record DVD-RAM media:
But how is it for DVD-Writing then? Well it wrote all 4X DVD+R discs at 4X without problems, but according to our quality tests the writing quality is questionable with some discs, including discs from known quality manufacturers such as Taiyo Yuden and Ricoh. Maybe it's better for DVD-R? It depends on how you look at it, it did write all discs without problems but do not expect that all 4X discs will work at 4X; most cheaper ones do only work at 2X. Write quality with DVD-R was in most cases good enough, since many DVD-R discs are of very low quality we expected some discs to show some problems. |
As you can see the performance of the LG GSA-4040B triple format recorder failed to impress. If you're interested in reading the complete review check it out here. You're of course welcome to post your reaction on the review via the last page of the review or in this thread on our Recording Hardware Forum.

If I would rate the drive out of bundle, features, and performance without caring about the reading and writing quality and compatibility....I would for sure give it 9 out of 10 or something as most other sites.....
In my opinion media compatibility and definitively write and read quality is more important than speed and features.....you do want the written discs to be of the best quality and last as long as possible?
And yes, as mentioned 2 places in the review: Firmware A301 is used.
