Today it is our pleasure to announce this Sony drive review from Moderator & Reviewer zevia. This is going to be a good one, because a lot of us around here are getting the fever for a DVD-RAM drive now that the speeds are increasing and media is around. With a RAM drive, you basically have a 4.7 GB floppy at your disposal, it's that transparent a process! Sony USA was kind enough to send us their latest Multi DVD Burner: the DRU-820A, the term "Multi" of course refers to the RAM capability.
What's so great about RAM capability you say? Well, here is a snippet from the webs Wikipedia to give you an idea, if you're new to this interesting writing strategy: Compared with other writeable DVDs, DVD-RAM is more closely related to hard disk technology, as it has concentric tracks instead of one long spiral track. Unlike the competing formats DVD+R, DVD-R, DVD+RW and DVD-RW, special DVD burning software is not required to write or read DVD-RAMs on a computer. DVD-RAMs can be accessed like a usual floppy disk or hard drive. The only thing is, as the Wiki goes on to say, just make sure you are running Mac OS 8.6 or later, Linux or Microsoft Windows XP for that native support.
The drive features single layer 4.7GB DVD burning at 16X, double layer and dual layer recording speed is 8X max. DVD+RW speeds are 8X and 6X max for DVD-RW. DVD-RAM recording is supported at 5X max, then to top it off, fast 48X CD-R burning and 32X CD-RW speeds can be achieved with this writer.

If you want to learn more about this drive, how well it matches it's claims and what quality burns we can expect with this writer, head on over to the review and take a look. Zevi really ran this burner through it's paces, using the typical gamut of CD Freaks torture tests, involving a nice variety of medias. When you're done looking it over, please stop by and say hello to Zevia and if you have any questions or even would like to see results from other medias, he might just be able to accommodate you in this dedicated CD Freaks forum thread.
Thanks Zevi for a great review! Let's hope everyone enjoys reading about this Sony drive!
