Can Solid State Drives operate in a RAID setup?
Solid State Drives are becoming more talked about these days, and even if prices are still prohibitive, there is a serious possibility that they can become an efficient solution for mobile PCs.

Next Level Hardware published today an interesting review exploring the performance of SSDs in a RAID system. This is not certainly a cheap piece of hardware, but for some reason I suddenly switched to a curious mode...

In the system test the Mtron 16GB Professional drive has been used, one of the fastest SSDs currently available in the market. The performance of this drive is really amazing, and detailed results can be found in the review. Because of high prices, only corporate systems can afford this solution, but, as reported in the original article,

"even if the manufacturer rates the lifeline of these drives at 140 years of 50GB read/write's per day, real world results by enterprise guru's such as Dave Graham state that NAND Based SSD's actually deteriorate rather rapidly in a server environment. A large scale corporation would be much better suited waiting for more data on longevity before implementing any kind of setup like this in a server."

Let's wait and see what future will bring us.
