DTS announces Platinum High Performance HDD
Recently has been introduced in the market hybrid hard disc drives (HDD) containing a flash memory to make discs faster. DTS announced a new category of drive, formerly known as the MCell Drive, the Platinum HDD. This drive combines 1GB of SDRAM cache with up to 200GB of conventional storage. According to the official product page, key advantages are the following:

Performance:
  • 10-100 times the transaction performance of traditional HDD

Efficiency

  • Uses 1/3 less energy than traditional 3.5” HDD
  • Provides up to 8 times the data throughput of conventional HDD

Data Integrity
  • Includes a UPS within each unit to ensure your data is safe in the event of a power failure

Durability
  • Lasts up to 30% longer than regular HDD

Integration
  • No new application software needed
  • Compatible with any OS that supports SATA (Windows, Mac, Unix, Linux)

heffequeThe problem is that for those numbers to be true you'd REALLY have to have a REALLY good pre-catching system. And how is a hard drive going to know what file I want to read/write before I even tell it to do so? And if I do so, it'll be too late to pre-catch anything and the hard drive will perform as poorly as any other normal hard drive.

The sustained throughput of such a drive wouldn't be much more than a regular PATA or SATA drive.
