Wii game console currently doesn't allow DVD playback (for licensing reasons, of course...), but it seems that this limitation will be overcome soon.
In fact, according to a news published at
DaylyTech:
Console cracking group Team Symbiote has released a software player for the Wii, which requires users to have a mod chip installed in the machine.
In order to get the DVD software running, according to Maxconsole, users must burn the application with Clone CD, then run it in a modded Wii.
No info is provided about where to find these chips, nor about prices.

I bet all of this costs more than many DVD players.
^More functions are always better than less. As for your question of "Do we really need the Wii to play our DVDs?" the answer is yes. Some people have limited space and less components is a good thing. Even if it won't be the best DVD player, it's good enough for the average dorm.
