GristyMcFisty used our news submit to tell us that the price of dual
format, dual layer DVD writers keeps falling, with prices hitting lows of
$65. Along with drop in price of dual layer drives the emergence of
the new 2.4x and 4x -R DL standard has appeared and the DVD+RW
alliance isn't about to let this standard overtake its format of
choice.
The DVD+RW alliance is
keen to introduce 8x +R DL drives and media possibly as soon
as Q2 of this year as well as boosting +RW writing speeds to 8x as well.
There will be no change to the writing speeds of +R media which currently stands
at 16x.

CES 2005 - THERE WAS an unusually great number of companies ready to talk about DVD standards and speeds here at CES. The last couple of months, the price of DVD recorders went significantly down and you can now buy 16X DVD-R/DVD+R recorders capable of recording DVD-R DL, Dual Layer disks at four speeds for just about $65. Dual layer drives can store a massive 8.5GB but those disks still costs a fortune as you have to spend at least $7 or €7 per piece to get them. DVD+R or DVD-R discs with 4.7 GB capacity can be found for about one €uro or even less. Even if you want to spend that kind of money, those disks are usually 2.4 speeds only and rarely can you find some 4X DVD+R DL disks.
In 2005 DVD+RW alliance is keen to introduce DVD+R DL 8X discs
and drives and we heard that this might happen in Q2 already. Alliance
plans to increase the speeds of DVD+RW from current 4X to 8X. According to
documents we have seen, recording speeds of DVD+R won"t change from
current 16X that we already saw in 2004.

They may want to introduce faster +R DL media but with the price of DL media
i dont think there is much point until the media becomes cheaper. I am glad to
see that +RW media has speeded up as its good news for all.

screw the speeds just bring down the damn prices. We need this stuff to be affordable, then work on getting the speeds better. I still can not afford the 10 bux a disc they want to cahrge. This is more then what I paid for single layer media. In another year I still doubt we will see this media dropping in price. THen we will leap frog to blue ray and get stuck with a lot of useless landfill.

Ranmacanada just touch it - new formats are in the way with larger capacities, Blu-ray, HD-DVD and other things still to be known...
DL are expensive and faster discs (4x ) cannt be found, at the same time doubts on the future of the format are discussed
http://www.cdfreaks.com/news/11232
But if we look for other kind of doubts, it seems there is a real tradeoff recording speed/life time of recorded media.
Speed not beeing it all, announcement of better coating and protection layers, or enlarged time span should be as interesting or even more than speed increase of xtimes.
