The DVD+RW and DVD-RW standards have competed fiercely to become the market mainstream. Philips, the leading promoter of the DVD+RW standard, has attracted the biggest PC vendors, Dell Computer and Hewlett-Packard (HP), to its side to vie against Pioneer's DVD-RW standard. According to Dr Bos, with support from Dell and HP, the price of DVD+RW burners will fall under US$100. Both Dell and HP are offering DVD+RW burners in their sub-US$1,000 PC systems, he added. Dr Bos also pointed out that DVD-Multi and DVD-Dual format drives made by some Japanese players, such as Sony, entail higher production costs due to licensing fees for both the DVD+RW and DVD-RW standards. |
