DVDs365 changes terms & conditions - 20 DVDs/month limit

nsd3 used our news submit to tell us "No longer can you rent as many DVDs as you can turn around within any given month. Instead a 20 DVD/month limit has been imposed. After your 20th hire you get billed. All well and good, but no mention of what they"ll do if they delay in sending your requested DVDs to you. If the DVDs are in their possession and you have a healthly rental list, and they don"t send you 20 DVDs/month, they won"t reduce you rental by the 75p/DVD that you"re paying for! Heads they win, tails you lose."

Unlimited DVD rental for only 75p per movie Our most popular package costs £14.99 a month, which lets you hire 3 DVDs at a time - plenty to keep you going over a wet weekend! You can rent up to 20 DVDs within the monthly package price - which works out at an incredible 75p per hire! And if you want more than 20 DVDs in any month - that"s no problem - we just take your next rental period payment after the return of your 20th hire. For the really avid movie fan - consider one of our higher-use packages, or an annual subscription.

I am not familiar with DVDs365 but, it seems a little dangerous to begin tinkering with your model right now when Netflix and Blockbuster are duking it out for lower prices. Netflix is looking to double their online customer base and is coming to the UK as well. Right now, Netflix boasts about 2.1 million cutomers. If you would like to learn more about DVDs365, here is a link to their page.

I've used DVDs365 for a couple of months and I'm happy enough with the service provided. Even though I try to turn the discs around the same day, there is still the Post Office to deal with. Discs get lost and delayed in both directions which reduces the number you can actually rent in a month. My best month was 26 discs, but it's normally 18 to 22. So the change to the T&Cs won't have a major impact. What is annoying is the fact that they haven't informed me of the change. On the upside they do credit the days lost for discs that are unplayable or lost in the post.

How much competition do they currently have in the UK and what is the standard "out at once" plan? Netflix just annouced a price drop for their 3 out program from $ 21.99 (which was an increase earlier this year from $ 19.99) to $ 17.99. On the 3 out plan, 20 a month is even a bit ambitious, and I am close enough to one of their newest distribution centers that next day delivery should be the norm. I do suspect that sometimes they delay a day or two reporting the receipt of a disc, and that they actually send shipments out late enough that they post office counts them as the next day's business. (i.e. They say it shipped Tues., it actually goes out from the post office Weds. and arrives on Thurs.)

There's quite a few suppliers (I can think of 4 off the top of my head) offering DVD rental by mail in the UK. A 3 disc at a time subscription with most of them is around £15 ($27). The cost looks high compared to the USA due to the current state of the exchange rate, and that it includes sales tax at 17.5%. If the exchange rate was back to the more normal £1 = $1.50 it would work out at $22.50 including sales tax.
