Delkin Devices introduces gold CD/DVD-R's that last 100 years

I remember when CDs first launched, there were mainly claims about their ruggedness and durability and some claimed that CDs were virtually indestructible.  Well over the years, it became clear that this is not the case, since CDs can easily be scratched or cracked and most recordable media suffers damage from prolonged UV exposure, heat and in some cases oxidation (known as 'CD-Rot').

Well the company Delkin Devices, which is known for its premium quality memory cards and other photographic equipment has introduced Gold CD-R's and DVD-R's that are designed to last up to 100 years or longer.  These discs feature a 24 karat gold reflective layer which is resistant to humidity, temperature and oxidation that commonly results in the failure of most regular CD and DVD recordables.

Delkin's Gold DVD-R discs are shipping already and are sold in 10 and 16 DVD-R packs within a protective disc case containing individual protective sleeves for each disc and 25 and 100 DVD-R spindles.  The 10 and 16 DVD-R disc case packs will be sold for MSRP $29.99 and MSRP $46.99 respectively and the 25 and 100 DVD-R spindles will be sold for $72.99 and $279.99 respectively.

Delkin Devices, Inc., maker of premium quality eFilm memory cards and other innovative digital photography products, today introduced the long anticipated DVD-R addition to the popular eFilm Archival Gold media line. The eFilm Archival Gold DVD-R is now shipping to distributors and resellers all over the world.

"Camera stores and mini-labs have been clamoring for museum quality media with the higher storage capacity of a DVD-R from the moment we introduced the eFilm Archival Gold CD-R," explains Martin Wood, CEO of Delkin Devices, Inc. "There were many technical difficulties to overcome in developing a DVD-R that could withstand the rigorous accelerated aging tests required to meet our Archival Gold standard. Now photographers working with the larger file sizes of today's DSLRs have a reliable storage media for their work and precious memories."

The innovative materials and manufacturing methods used to produce eFilm Archival Gold DVD-R's make them among the most reliable storage media available. Other DVD-R's may deteriorate quickly due to common environmental factors: ultraviolet light, heat, and humidity. Results of an accelerated aging process used to test the longevity of DVD-R media show eFilm Archival Gold DVD-R's may safely store images for more than 100 years. This longevity test was conducted in accordance with ISO 18927-2002 guidelines.

A key component of Archival Gold DVD-R's durability is the use of gold in the reflective layer of the disc. Gold is one of the most inert, reflective (and expensive) elements on earth, which makes it perfect to resist the effects of temperature and humidity. These characteristics prevent oxidation, a common cause of failure to most CD-Rs. Thirty percent of Delkin's cost to produce every eFilm Archival Gold disc is due to the use of 24 karat gold.

Although these discs may last a long time if handled with care, it will be interesting to see how resistant to scratches, like TDK's Durabis media.   Then again, it seems like these discs are intended for those who archive their photos in which the discs are stored away somewhere for the next 10 to 20 years, in which photos in traditional photo albums would have faded to some extent and other recordable media would have long deteriorated to an unreadable state.   With the high cost per disc, these are not the type of discs one would want to turn into coasters either.
