The Blu-ray
Disc Founders (BDF), Hitachi, Ltd., LG Electronics Inc., Matsushita Electric
Industrial Co., Ltd., Mitsubishi Electric Corporation, Pioneer Corporation,
Royal Philips Electronics, Samsung Electronics Co., Ltd., Sharp Corporation,
Sony Corporation, and Thomson, announce that the PC giants Hewlett-Packard
Company and Dell Inc. are now also supporting the Blu-ray Disc format.
The BD-ROM (the read only version of BD) format is expected to be finalized early 2004 with products to follow in late 2005. The BD-R (BD write once) format should be finalized in mid 2004 and the BD-RW (BD rewritable) format is already available. "HP believes Blu-ray Disc is the most consumer-friendly technology choice for the next generation of removable storage," said John Romano, Senior Vice President, Consumer PC Organization, Hewlett-Packard Company. "With ever-expanding uses for digital discs in the market, HP believes Blu-ray Disc will allow for the seamless interchange between consumer electronics and personal computers, thus protecting an individuals' technology investment as well as expanding their digital capabilities. HP is committed to making technology easier to use and supports the proliferation of Blu-ray Disc. HP is looking forward to joining the Blu-ray Disc Founders in the very near future".
