Some of you might have experienced it, purchasing relative cheap discs that are advertised with a Taiyo Yuden MID and when bought and burned they clearly are of low quality. In that case it is very likely that you have been purchasing discs manufactured by a smaller disc manufacturer that has decided to use the Taiyo Yuden (TY) Manufacturer IDentification code (MID) to ensure better compatibly as the MID code of this manufacturer is widely supported.
Dakhaas, one of our forum members has explained that many manufacturers are doing this because the drive manufacturers have not added support for their media in their firmware. Therefore the manufacturers have to find ways to make sure that their discs are burned by a drive anyway.

This means that media with a fake TY ID is not always bad quality. Shop owners should also not advertise these products as being genuine Taiyo Yuden discs but this seems to be the general consensus at the moment already. If you however find discs that are cheap and advertised as genuine Taiyo Yuden then be sure to check on our Media Forum first.
