Dual format Blu-ray HD-DVD player announced by LG
LG Electronics published today a news announcing that it will launch the world's first dual-format high-definition disc player, capable of playing both Blu-ray Disc and HD DVD content. The unit will be released in the United States in early 2007. Details will be provided at the 2007 International Consumer Electronics Show (CES), held January 8–11 in Las Vegas.

According to the press release, LG expects this technological breakthrough to end the confusion and inconvenience of competing high-definition disc formats for both content producers and consumers.

DukeNukemBig deal. We knew it was just a matter of time. There's always money to be made in confusion, and having two hi-def formats and one low-def (I'm assuming it will play DVDs) is certainly confusing to most people. puke

What are you talking about?!? The two dualing formats have caused the consumer confusion, which is why neither HD-DVD or Blu-ray players aren't selling. LG has come up with a solution for those who aren't sure which one they should go with. Brilliant move, LG!

DeadManScrew that where are the dual format recorders? But anyhow I won't buy anything from either camp until the prices come right down and the DRM and revocation nonsense is well and truly cracked.

johnzapThe magic word is: price?

A friend of mine who's a buyer at a very large chain told me it was going to list at around $1000 US. Which probably means about $875 - $900 street price. Not cheap, but if this thing really works, they'll probably lower it eventually. I'm sure the bottom feeders around here will wait until it's under $200. Hope they don't hold their breath...too long Wink

DukeNukem@Bobverens I was hoping to see both camps stay apart. Then there might actually be a clear winner in this war. Now that LG has gone and built this thing, the war will drag on much longer. Personally, I want just ONE hi-def standard. C'mon, I can't be the only one who's thinking this.

Dolphinius_RexI'm with you 100% DukeNukem, dual format drives are the way the consumer ultimately will lose this war.

DukeNukem@Dolphinius_Rex And because there won't be a clear winner, people will be more hesitant to make the move from DVD to hi-definition. Way to go, LG. puke

Dolphinius_Rexluckily the price is about $1200 USD, so people won't be rushing in to buy it. Hopefully by Summer pricing will have come down enough on single format drives, and we'll start seeing a light at the end of the tunnel in this war.

Reading Andy Parsons, who didn't get a raise last year, criticizing the dual format player makes you feel sad for him. Pioneer really needs to push the home networking on their $1500 player if they want to survive.
