Fake Taiyo Yuden DVD recordables widely available - Beware!

Users on our forums report that European online DVD retailers are advertising with very cheap Taiyo Yuden DVD recordables. Taiyo Yuden is known as high quality media and is relatively expensive. CD Freaks visitors searching for bargains reported several cases of media with a Taiyo Yuden media code (TY) that were very cheap but seem not to be produced by the Japanese media manufacturer. Apparently there are companies who are using the TY media code for their discs.

The media code is used to find out the real manufacturer of media, media brands often buy their discs from different manufacturers and put their own label on it. The media code is also used by burners to determine the best burn settings.

Altough Taiyo Yuden has not given an official statement about this issue many online retailers have changed the information on their website after finding out when mailed by our members or reading our forum. The company behind the fake Taiyo Yuden is reportedly a company in Hong Kong called InfoSmart. Hong Kong media is notorious for being cheap and often of bad quality and manufacturered without much quality control.

We would like to warn everyone to be carefull with deals with cheap media that contains the TY media code, you could be purchasing fake Taiyo Yuden discs. If your favorite online retailer is advertising cheap discs as being Taiyo Yuden manufacturered then contact them to make sure you are purchasing real Taiyo Yuden discs and point them to this post when needed. Also please report your findings on our forum .

Note: Some online shops may not be aware of this case which means they are not scamming you on purpose. Also note that these fake discs are not necessarily of low quality.

Good news though the Sony HDTV camcorder costs even more than JVC one.
What has a camcorder price comparison got to do with fake TY media?
I guess Kenny wanted to comment on a different article.
But to stay on topic: These faked discs seem to be very crappy. Max. writing speed is 4x if you want to have good results, while real TY with this mediacode can be burned with at least 8x.
We've tried to modify the firmwares with several (even self modified) writing strategies, but the results were :r

Princo strikes again?
Yeah it is but the Sony has 3CCD's and the JVC has a single CCD. That Sony looks awesome. I know its missing about 400 (1440x 1080) lines of rez in the HD mode but it still equates to twice the definiton of the current camcorders and it runs at 60fps.

As for those fake TY discs, I think genesysdtp.com is selling those judging from this kind of sales tag "Due to manufacturing agreements, we're not allowed to advertise the actual manufacturer of these discs." If you look at the top side of the disc it looks like a disc princo makes with the style of printing.

Btw, Genesys is an excellent seller and I'm not dissing them in any way but I do think they have been fooled into thinking these are real TY.

Go there and check them out under DVD-R.
