Microsoft has traced some companies that sold pirated software. Selling illegal software in a company is a big risk, and will usually end up in fines, they just can or can NOT pay.
Raid uncovers nearly $1 million in pirated Microsoft software
A spokesman for Redmond, Wash.-based Microsoft said at a news conference the illegal software was discovered in July after Customs agents raided the offices of Compunet Systems of Griffin, Ga. and Tierra Computer of Doraville, Ga. Microsoft attorney Nick Psyhogeos said the two vendors, which allegedly were distributing pirated copies of Office 2000 Professional Edition, the Windows 98 operating system and other software, could be prosecuted for trafficking in counterfeit goods. Federal trademark law imposes fines of up to $2 million and 10 years in jail for each violation. Federal copyright laws include fines of up to $250,000 and five years in jail per violation. |
